As Paul Wrote This Letter
• He was facing death• 2 Tim 2:11-13 It is a faithful saying: For
if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
• 12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
• 13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

• The Book of 2 Timothy was written in prison just before Paul's execution by Nero. He knew that such a death might also befall his son in the faith, Timothy, as well as any other faithful servant of Christ.

His Concern Was For The GospelNot For His Own Life
• 2 Tim 2:8-10 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
• 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Suffering Is Required• Paul did not preach a gospel of
health and prosperity• John 15:20-21 Remember the word that I said
unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
• 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
• Speaking of Saul of Tarsus• Acts 9:16 For I will shew him how great things
he must suffer for my name's sake.

Paul’s Gospel Was One of Suffering

• 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. 37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
• 38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. 39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
