WORKING TOGETHER TO BEAT OCCUPATIONAL CANCER

DON’T TAKE THE RISK

Find out more about the dangers of asbestos dust and how to stay safe at www.notimetolose.org.uk

Worldwide, over 100,000 people a year die from lung diseases caused by exposure to asbestos 20–40 years ago. Don’t risk becoming one of tomorrow’s statistics.

What are the dangers?Drilling into, sanding or breaking up materials containing asbestos creates dust containing microscopic asbestos fibres. These fibres can lodge in the lungs and cause fatal diseases, such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, in later life.

Who is most at risk?People working in construction and related trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, heating and ventilation engineers, plasterers, painters and

decorators, electricians, telecoms engineers, floorers and tilers.

How can you stay safe?Do not work with asbestos or in contaminated areas. If asbestos is disturbed or damaged and needs cleaning up, or if it needs to be worked with in any other way, then appoint a specialist contractor.

Full asbestos removal should only be carried out by specialist contractors.
