September Means It’s Asbury Cafe Time Asbury Methodist Church began the Asbury Cafe in the Goat Barn on the Fairgrounds in 1960. The founding church had only a few facilities, and its location at the eastern edge of Albuquerque, 10,000 Candelaria NE, was barren. The cafe began as an idea to benefit the church’s building fund. The specialty of homemade pie was the first menu item, and the church facilities took shape as the cafe prospered. In 1971 the decision was made to donate the profits to local charities. The Asbury Cafe’s reputation for good food and community outreach grew to such an extent that it stretched the resources of the single church. In 1987 St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church joined forces with Asbury to expand the volunteer forces and supplement the outreach of the cafe. In 1993 we were joined by St. John’s United Methodist Church. These churches shared in the work involved with the cafe: picking and processing fruit, preparing pies, planning, and operating the cafe. In 2001, three more churches joined; this year, ten churches are providing pies and workers for the cafe. Every penny of the profit goes to helping charities that feed the needy, and none of the proceeds of the cafe support the member churches. We will sell nearly 2000 pies in the 11 day fair this year. All charities receiving money from the cafe provide food to members of the Albuquerque community. We feed people at the Fair so that these agencies can feed people all year round. September Means It’s Asbury Cafe Time

Asbury Methodist Church began the Asbury Cafe in the Goat Barn on the Fairgrounds in 1960.

In 1987 St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church joined forces with Asbury to expand the volunteer forces and supplement the outreach of the cafe . In 1993 we were joined by St. John’s United Methodist Church. These churches shared in the work involved with the cafe :

picking and processing fruit, preparing pies, planning, and operating the cafe. In 2001, three more churches joined; this year, ten churches are providing pies and workers for the cafe .

LIBRARY NEWS

Did you know Asbury has a library? We do. Several folks have even said it is a very nice one. Three or four first time borrowers have come into the library in the last week or so. Why not join them? There have been several new additions to the library collection in the last couple of months. Maybe one of them is just what you are looking for. Asbury's library is in the far north east corner of the building and is a self-serve library. You are welcome to come in anytime. Directions for checking out a book or other material are posted in the library.

In response to some of the concerns voiced during the Annual Church Conference in November and from the town hall question and answer session held later, printed copies of the minutes and reports from church committees are now available in the library. Look for the white binder on top of the shelf near the computer.

Search our online catalog from your home computer or smart phone on the Asbury web site Library Page, found under Church Info, or go directly to www.asburyabq.org/AsburySearch.htm. Use the search function of your browser to find any combination of words, numbers or letters in any column. For Windows that would be Ctrl-F, for an Apple product Command-F or Apple-F, etc. Books currently on the UMW Reading Program have UMW in the Subject column and are found on the wooden cart in the library.

A member of the Asbury Library staff is usually in the library during the Sunday School hour and on Thursdays from 9 to 3 to help you. You may contact us by e-mail at [email protected] with any questions, suggestions, or requests.
