Colored diamonds are called fanciesand are available in red, blue, pink, canary yellow, brown, peach, orange, purple, green, violet, gray, and black.

    Skin CancerScreening andPrevention

Skin Cancer is the most common form of cancer, yet isthe most preventable. Here aresome things to keep in mindwhen looking out for signs ofskin cancer.

Skin Cancer TypesMost skin cancer is classified asbasal cell carcinoma, also calledBCC. Some of these cancerousgrowths have visible blood vessels throughout, can looklike open sores, and can be pinkand flat or multi-colored andraised. These are most oftenfound around the head andneck, including the scalp, whichis quite difficult to examine

    yourself.

Squamous cell carcinoma, orSCC, is the second most common form of skin cancer.Unlike basal cell, this cancer isin the upper layer of the skin. Its also more deadly thanBCC, but preventable andtreatable. Its mostly causedfrom UV exposure over timebut can also be caused fromskin inflammation and diseases.BCC is more commonly foundin older adults; however, morecases are being diagnosed inyounger adults.

SCC spots are rough and scalyand sometimes bleed if brushedor scratched. They can alsolook like a sore with adepressed center or raised border.

    Melanoma appears to be a

freckle that becomes irregular.According to cancer.org, youshould be aware of the A, B, C,D & Es of melanoma. Theyare:A is for Asymmetry: One

half of a mole or birthmarkdoes not match the other.

B is for Border: The edges areirregular, ragged, notched, orblurred.

C is for Color: The color isnot the same all over and mayinclude shades of brown orblack, or sometimes with patch-es of pink, red, white, or blue.

D is for Diameter: The spot islarger than 6 millimeters across(about inch the size of apencil eraser), althoughmelanomas can sometimes besmaller than this.

E is for Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.

PreventionIts important to note that peo-ple with a lighter skin and eyecoloration are more susceptibleto skin cancer, but everyoneshould take precautions toavoid harm. Some things toremember:

You should do a self examina-

tion once a month, and a professional exam at least oncea year, especially after the age of 21.

Apply sun screen prior to evengetting out in the sun. Expertssay two ounces (about theamount of a shot glass) is theminimum amount you shouldapply, and you should reapplyevery couple of hours if youreout in the sun or water. Wear protective clothing or goindoors when you feel likeyouve got too much sun.

Finally, avoid the sun, especiallyduring the hottest part of theday.

While doing research for thisarticle, I was encouraged to bemore cautious and take bettercare of my skin through pre-vention, monitoring frecklesand spots on my own skin, andgetting a thorough professionalexam once a year.

    Mouth SoresBy Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Mouth sores come in severaldifferent varieties and can have any number of causes, including: Infections from bacteria, viruses or fungus Irritation from a loose orthodontic wire, a denturethat doesnt fit, or a sharp edgefrom a broken tooth or filling The symptom of a disease ordisorder.

Your dentist should examineany mouth sore that lasts aweek or longer. Among themost common mouth sores are:

    Canker sores.

Small ulcers with a white orgray base and a red border, canker sores appear inside themouth. They are not conta-gious, but can return frequentlyand may be only one cankersore or several. Their exactcause is uncertain but someexperts believe that immune

system problems, bacteria orviruses may be involved. Cankersores usually heal on their ownafter a week or two. Over-the-counter topical anesthetics andantimicrobial mouthwashes mayprovide temporary relief. Stayaway from hot, spicy or acidicfoods that can irritate the sore.Antibiotics from your dentistand some oral bandages canreduce secondary infection.

    Cold sores (alsocalled fever blisters.)

Groups of fluid-filled blistersthat often erupt around the lipsand sometimes under the noseor around the chin. Cold soresare caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 and arevery contagious. The initialinfection (primary herpes) maybe confused with a cold or fluand can cause painful lesions toerupt throughout the mouth.Once a person is infected withprimary herpes, the virus staysin the body and causes occasional attacks. Cold soreblisters usually heal in a weekby themselves. Over-the-

counter topical anesthetics can provide some relief. Your dentist may prescribe antiviraldrugs to reduce these kinds ofviral infections.

    Leukoplakia.

Thick, whitish-color patchesthat form on the inside of thecheeks, gums or tongue, thesepatches are caused by excess cellgrowth and are commonamong tobacco users. They canresult from irritations such asan ill-fitting denture or thehabit of chewing on the insideof the cheek. Sometimes leuko-plakia is associated with oralcancer. Your dentist may rec-ommend a biopsy if the patchappears suspicious. Your dentist willexamine the lesion and checkthe biopsy results to help determine how to manage thedisease. Treatment begins withremoving the factors that contribute to the lesion: quitting tobacco or replacingill-fitting dentures or bridges.

    Candidiasis.

This fungal infection (alsocalled moniliasis or oral thrush)occurs when the yeast Candidaalbicans reproduce in largenumbers. It is common amongdenture wearers. Most often itoccurs in people with weakimmune systemsthe veryyoung, elderly or those debilitated by disease, such asdiabetes or leukemia. In addition, people with drymouth syndrome are susceptible to candidiasis.Candida may also flourish afterantibiotic treatment, which candecrease normal bacteria in themouth. Controlling candidiasismeans focusing on preventingor controlling the conditionthat causes the outbreak. Goodoral hygiene is essential. Cleanyour dentures to removeCandida and remove them atbedtime. If the cause is drymouth saliva substitutes andprescription medications maybe helpful when the underlyingcause of dry mouth is incurableor unavoidable.

  • Social SecurityBenefits

the StrategiesLast month, we discussed thebasics of Social Security and alsodiscussed that married coupleshave several options when deciding when to take their bene-fits. This month, we will describetwo strategies used by marriedcouples to maximize benefits the file and suspend strategyand the claim now, claim morelater strategy.

As discussed last month, a personcan delay filing for benefits at fullretirement age (FRA) and

receive an 8% increase for eachyear after FRA that he waits tostart his benefits until reachingage 70. This could result in a32% increase in the total amountof payments available throughoutlifetime if FRA is 66 but he waitsuntil 70 to receive benefits. Alsoremember, that if married, aspouse can draw their own benefitor of their spouses benefit.

The file and suspend strategyworks best where one spouseworked and the other did notwork or rarely worked and willnot be entitled to social securitybenefits or their amount will besmall. It requires that one spousebe at (FRA). When the workingspouse reaches FRA, he files forand immediately suspends receiptof benefits which allows his benefits to continue to grow at 8% per year until 70. Since hefiled for benefits, his spouse candraw on his record and startreceiving of his benefit amount. Then, when he reaches 70, he canstart receiving increased benefits.

For example, assume John andJane are both at FRA. Johnworked outside the home andJane was a homemaker. He isentitled to receive $1,000 amonth in Social Security benefits

but he wants to delay his benefitsfor 4 years so he can receive$1,320 a month, as opposed to$1,000 a month. However, if hesimply delays his benefit, Jane willbe unable to receive benefitsbecause she has no work record ofher own to draw on. By using thefile and suspend strategy, Johncan file for his benefits, thenimmediately suspend his paymentswhile allowing Jane to file toreceive benefits immediately basedon his work record. Then, whenhe reaches 70 he will receive thehigher benefit amount.

The claim now, claim more laterstrategy can also boost a marriedcouples return from SocialSecurity. This strategy works byallowing one spouse to claim ben-efits early, while the other spouse, who is already at FRA, claims onlyspousal benefits, which allows hisor her personal benefits to grow. For example, Jane claims her$2,000 benefit at the age of 62.Her husband, John, who is atFRA, files to receive only spousalbenefits based on her record, which is equal to of her benefitsince he has already reached FRA.This allows John to receiveincome from his spousal benefitimmediately, while still allowinghis own benefit payments to grow.

Finally, by combining both strategies, a married couple canboth increase their benefits. Bothspouses must be at FRA for this towork. Assume Jane is the higher

earner and she files for and immediately suspends benefitsuntil age 70. John then files forand receives spousal benefits of of Janes amount on her record. At age 70, Jane will claim her ownbenefits which will have grown by8% per year and John will switchfrom spousal benefits to his ownbenefits which continued to growat 8% per year.

As you can see, knowing when tofile for Social Security benefits andwhich benefits to file for can be aconfusing task. There are factorsspecific to certain individuals thatexclude them from taking advan-tage of the above strategies or reasons why they may be betterserved by not using these strategies. Before making anydecisions about taking your SocialSecurity, you should always con-sult with someone well versed inthese benefits and strategies.Failure to do so before making anelection may impact the amountof income you will receivethroughout your retirement years.

This is the most common misconceptionabout LATISSE.It is applied topically so only ifyou are careless and getit in your eyes, and only if youhave hazel eyes, blue/brown orgreen/brown eyes. Pure blue orgreen eyes do not have enoughmelanocytes to get darker. Ifyou are already dark brown, itcan not get any darker.

I can't tell you how manytimes this past April and Maythat I've heard the statement "I wish it would stop raining". I must admit that I felt that itkinda needed to dry up a littlemyself, but I really steer awayfrom asking for the rain to stopand plus, there's nothing youcan do about it anyway. I probably would feel different tosome degree if I had two feet ofwater in my living room, butI've learned through the years towatch what you ask for, becauseyou might just get it and youprobably won't like those resultseither. It won't take long after itquits raining before you beginto hear, "we need a little rain".You'll even begin to see somefolks running sprinklers in theiryards to water grass. This is apractice that I do not agreewith, but that's my opinion and as opinions go, we all have them.

For years I've struggledinside my brain to find onething on this earth that's moreimportant than water. To thisdate water is still at the top ofthe list. If you don't believe metry living without it at yourhouse for just one hour. Ourentire food source depends onwater. Crops, livestock, poultry, wildlife, shellfish, fish and mostother forms of life depend onwater to survive.

Most of the things that Itruly love are directly related tothe water resources. It's truethat too much water can have anegative effect on crops, fish andwildlife, but too much is usuallybetter than not enough. Turkeyreproduction can be hindered bywet springs, but severe drought

can hurt even worse. Severalyears ago our midwestern statessuffered from very low amountsof rain. Not only did this affectranching and farming, it alsoaffected wildlife populations inthese states also. Turkey numbers dropped significantlyand since the rains have nowreappeared, the birds are nowon the road to recovery.

Every drop of water that yousee came from some form ofprecipitation- rain, sleet, ice orsnow. I cannot think of anyother way that water is producedother than condensation. Itwould be great if we all couldget just the right amount ofwater we need whenever wewanted it, but that ain't aboutto happen. I know that a rainstorm can put a damper onsome very finely laid out plansand it's always been a pain towork in it, but through the yearsI've learned to take it for what itis. I love the rain and I don'tcare to live without it, as a matter of fact, life as we know itcan't survive without it.....

    Until Next Time,

Like many other grandparents in this area, oursocial calendar is determined by when, where and whateversports our grandkids are playing.

Which is why we found ourselves in Branson, Missouri,a few weeks ago watching ourgrandson Will participating inthe USSA Under 11 WorldSeries. A good time was had byall and the Prairieville Piratesbattled all the way back fromtwo early losses to take home asecond place trophy.

And Branson is a nice enoughtown if you ignore the trafficsnarl on the main drag and theendless number of tributebands. On one stretch alonethere were groups coveringeverything from ABBA, the BeeGees and the Beatles to NeilDiamond, John Denver andElvis. So there were some bignames in lights-just no trafficlights to be seen.

Now one familiar theme thatwe noticed in Branson and inmany smaller towns in Arkansaswas that everyone seemed tohave a Historical DowntownDistrict. I can understandhow towns like Hope, Delightand Fordyce are justifiablyproud of native sons BillClinton, Glen Campbell andBear Bryant respectively. Butsome of these villages likeHardy (population 722) musthave had to create a little history of their own to qualifyfor a historical classification.

Then I started thinking(Danger, danger)-if I couldcreate a bit of local historyand use my Journalism 101 ruleof thumb-Never let the truthget in the way of a goodstory.-I believe we could con-duct an interesting, and perhapsprofitable, tour of HistoricalDowntown Gonzales.

Before we begin, pleaseremember how my brain-celldepleted cerebral cortex functions. Most of my remain-ing memory is in the wayback mode so that I can recallimages of the 60s and 70smuch better than I can remember what happened yesterday. Thus, some of theplaces and people youll hear

about on this tour may nolonger exist. Also, some of thestories may classify as urban legends or have an air of mystery surrounding them.

In fact if we visit enough oldhaunts to rouse up the spirits of

days gone by, we can call it theMagical Mystery Tour of theGhosts of Gonzales and maybewell qualify for a reality show. Now if youll climb aboard ourCalco bus, well begin this tourde farce

Today, we are starting fromAirline Highway and headedsouth down Burnside. If youlook to the right, youll see ablue auto parts store. But oncethere was a quaint little spotthere called the KYI lounge.Legend has it that one night atrio of patrons-lets call themButch, Ralph and Billy- wereplayfully picking on a localphysician-lets call him Doc.When another lounge denizenmisinterpreted their sarcasticjibes, he went home to fetch ashotgun to defend the popularphysicians honor. When he

returned brandishing the 12gauge, Butch ran through thebackdoor into a clothesline,Ralph made it across the streetto an EATEL phone boothwhere he tried to call the policewhile kneeling down to hide

and Billy later told the authori-ties, Thats not the gun hepointed at me. The one hepointed at me was much big-ger!

By the way, there were neverany shells in the gun.

Now to the left was once thesite of Gonzaless only drive-inmovie where many classicromances appeared on the bigscreen. Later the locationbecame Galleries Gonzales witha huge parking lot where manyof Gonzaless own romancestook place in the back seats ofcars under the guise of waitingfor their order from QuikSnack.

And if a guy ran short of cashand couldnt afford a burgerfrom that establishment for hisdate, he could circle back to the block building on your

right-once known as DairyKurl-and get a chili bun and acherry coke for about 50 cents.

Up here on the left is the historic St. Theresas Churchwhere a chorus of well-meaningrepenters showed up at earlymorning mass after an all-nighter at the Festival andmistakenly sang Jum-ba-la, myLord instead of Kum-ba-ya.And next door is the RiversideBarber Shop where Bobby,Pomp and Jim would fish offthe porch in New River on slow days.

Now pay close attention tothe lots on both sides ofLamendolas Grocery. On oneside was Cassos Bar where during one crowded Sunday ofthe aforementioned JambalayaFestival, a WinestonedCowboy-lets call him Mike-rode a horse into the barand ordered a drink for both of them.

On the other side was thelegendary Town Tavern whereGonzaless finest would gatherat halftime of the Bulldogsgames to discuss second-halfstrategy and perhaps hedge afew bets. And further up onthe left was Roy Marchands-the home of the best chickenloaf in the universe. The eaterywas also the northernmostboundary of the Festival whenit was held on Burnside andlocals learned to jitterbug oneight to ten inches of beer cansin the street.

Of course, Spartan Field toour right was the scene of somehistoric victories but one incident of the not-so-gloriousvariety occurred one nightwhen the kicker-lets call himRonnie-missed the ball on theopening kickoff. Not to bedenied, he circled around andmissed it again. The event ledto an epic poem-Trumpetsblew the fanfare, Whistles blewfor play, Kicker blew the kickoff, We always start that way.

And the soccer fields on theright were once the baseballfield where all of Gonzalesplayed. Across the road was asmall version of Town Hall andthe Sheriff s Office and thestory goes that Bruce Lavigne

once hit a ball that bouncedright here on Burnside and hitthe door causing an officer toanswer the knock.

A little further down on theleft was Fiesta Grill-a placewhere the steaks and burgerswere so good that when theowners decided to purchasenew equipment, customersrevolted and demanded theirfood be cooked on the oldgrill. It would later becomethe first home of Leaders FriedChicken but store the memoryof this location for a later stop.

Remember this red light atCornerview for future referencealso and while were stopped, gaze a ways down to your rightat the former home of FrancessGrocery where Mr. Myles triedto remove a rather large television off the wall one nightto keep the Yankees from winning the World Series andlosing a bet to Bud.

And now for our final stopon this tour, well pull into theparking lot of this MexicanRestaurant that was onceDaltons-an establishment witha history all its own. But if youwant to grab a margarita, Ill

take you back even further intime to a place called Fish-N-Pic-a little bar that featured a cast of characters thatHollywood would have troubleduplicating.

One busy Friday whenBurnside was only two lanes, one of the regulars-lets callhim Gordon-arrived to findsomeone had parked in hisparking space. Our hero decided to station his vehicleabout 10 feet directly behindthe intruder so that he couldpull into his spot when theguy left and took his seat atthe bar for a few rum andcokes. Sometime later, thepoor fellow got ready to leaveand decided he needed moreroom to get out.

Can you move your car? heasked Gordon.

Dont you have enoughroom? Gordon replied incredulously.

No, came the answer.Cant you back this car up?

Oh, I can back it up allright, said Gordon reachingfor his keys.

And back it up he did, ladiesand gentlemen. Back into the

busy traffic on Burnside. Allthe way back to the signal Ialluded to a moment ago onCornerview-dutifully stoppingat the red light. And-still inreverse-into the parking lot ofLeaders Fried Chicken.

Is that enough room foryou? Gordon shouted back. Can you get out now? Andthen to no one in particular,Can I back this car up?

These have been only a fewof the highlights of HistoricDowntown Gonzales, ladiesand gentlemen. May I suggestyou take the music and arts

tour which includes the reallyhistoric Pasqua Theatre wherethe white kids always wanted tosit in the balcony which wasreserved for minorities andthe Jungle House where wedont need a Blue Notes tributeband because Johnny and Patare still playing locally. Be sureand request Jelly Bean.

And dont forget our HistoricDowntown District ofPrairieville tour coming afterHighway 73 is completed in theyear 2525.

PAYINGATTENTIONTO DETAILSPay attention young man! myMom used to say. SometimesI swear. I dont think you knowif you are coming or going, getthe lead out! my coaches usedto say. We get pushed alongthrough life and I believe thathustle and bustle helped meturn out alright.

Imagine if we had cell phoneswhen we were 15. Hell wefound the parties by word ofmouth and actually talking toeach other. But today social

media is bothering me and maybe my demise.

This past year I have been intwo car wrecks while I was sitting still at the light or aSTOP sign. I can give you oneguess as to the reason for thecrashes, but your not going toneed it. You know that theywere looking at their cellphones. Its a wonder youngfolks make past 20 years old.

I went to the drive throughteller at the bank a couple ofweeks back. I sat in line behinda small compact car. I watchedthe driver put her deposit in theopened drawer. After a fewminutes the drawer opened andshe retrieved the contents. Thedrawer closes and I prepare tomove up. I sit and sit for about4 minutes because I thoughtshe had another transaction. Finally I gave a small honk onthe horn. She pressed the gasand drove off. When I got tothe window the teller rolled hereyes at me. She told me the girlfinished and just started texting. She then thanked me for honking because she couldntget her attention from insidethe bank. She wasnt paying

attention. One night I went to turn into

Snos Seafood and there was acar with no lights sitting andlooking abandoned in the middle of the entrance. Half onthe entrance side and half onthe exit side. Upon a closerlook I did see a dim light in thedrivers seat. After squeezingthrough I turn around andpulled up be hind and got outto see if she needed help. WhenI approached I realized she wasjust sitting there texting. Whathas the world come too? I wentback to my car and layed on thehorn. She jumped and thentook off. My Lord, Pay attention.

Last week I had the need togo by Walmart. It took me awhile to find a parking placewithout walking a mile. Finallyone became available. As I gotout I noticed the call of naturehad come upon me and I scooted toward the restroom inthe store. I dont know aboutyou but my bladder becomesimpatient the closer I get to thefacility. By the time I arrived atthe restrooms I dashed in. Thestalls were closed and I noticedthere were no urinals. Whoops?Im in the girls room.Fortunately there were no ladiesor at least I thought. As I

walked out I looked back to seehigh heels under the stall wallwhich confirmed it was the girlsroom. Unless Bruce Jenner wasvisiting Prairieville.

You may say to me pay attention but I want to takeissue with the restroom doorsigns. If you notice there is verylittle difference from the Menssymbol as to the Womens symbol. Sure I see the littledress wing thing for theWomens but I wear my shirttails out and have a few poundson me. If you look and thinkthe Womens symbol could beconsidered a portly man withhis shirt out. I know its astretch but why dont we putone sign in red and the other inblue. No mistaking that. I knowIm making excuses. In realityIm trying to cover my embarrassment. Maybe I shouldpay attention.

Well its summer time and Iam playing all the golf my bodywill allow. Two or three times aweek I am chasing that littlewhite ball around. Its greathobbie and sport but it has itsdraw backs. It can get hot outthere. I spray sun screen every time I play. My arms, myface, ears and neck but not mylegs. I noticed a couple ofweeks that I was two toned

from my legs and feet. It is a lit-tle embarrassing when I wearmy flip flops. Ive even had people comment on the whitefeet at BBQs and such. Short ofplaying golf barefoot, whichprotocol will not allow, I dontknow the solution. One thingfor sure is Im going to playgolf. I did start wearing a shorter sock to tan more of myleg but that created a new problem. I still have a sock foottan but the shorter socks havecreated a striped effect. Now Ilook like candy striped gum.

I dont know what I was

thinking but at least I was thinking. Maybe I should pay alittle more attention but knowthis. I aint sitting in a dark carparked in the middle of the roador crashing into vehicles sittingstill. And yes, my bladder sometimes has mind of its own.He who has not ever hurriedand made a mistake cast the firststone.Im sure there are lots offolks not paying attention to thesigns and have made similardecisions.

FarewellWell yall it has been such funwriting for Ascension Magazine, but Im afraid Im calling itquits. Managing a full-timejob, a home, family and work-ing our land on the weekends, this old girls schedule is bust-ing at the seam. And until theymake a 30 hour day that givesme the time to do all I wantIm having to let something goin order to have time for a newinterest of mine-Wood Carving,so, Im trading my writing timefor carving time and steppingoff the page to allow someoneelse a turn.

From the good grace of MikeStrong and all the readers Ivebeen given the opportunityshare my thoughts and discovered that many more thanI thought share the same viewsas I. Conversing with each ofyou has been so rewarding forme. Ive learned so much fromyour insight.

Ive been asked about the nameIntrepid Thoughts. I decidedon Intrepid as it describes mevery well -fearless, bold andbrave which is evident of thesubjects on which Ive written.

As I go, Id like to recap a fewof the messages. While somewere ambiguous and othersdirect all were what used to becalled common sense. That iswhat most of the readersenjoyed the most, they said. Before you follow anyone, ask where theyre going. Being your own biggest fanis tacky. Real life is far more beautifulthan a picture of it on yourphone. There is good in everyone.Treat people nice.

Stop texting while driving.Youre not nearly as good at itas you believe. No, youre not. Dont take more than youreally need. Others may needtoo. Try. You might surpriseyourself. Easy doesnt do it. Equal doesnt depend onothers to provide their living. Acceptance of all people isfar different than acceptance ofall behavior. Stop groupingtheir meaning and calling it dis-crimination. Dont under estimate anyone. Were all good atsomething. There are consequences, likeit or not. Dont be the house on theblock that everyone hates. Beconsiderate. Smile. It looks good onyou. Just because someone thinkstheyre better than you, its onlytrue if you believe them. If we cant say youre fat.Dont say were skinny.Perception of offense is noexcuse. Give compliments.Everyone has something beautiful about them.

Thank you everyone for havingme around and reading mythoughts. And thank you againto Mike Strong for allowing methe opportunity to be part ofhis magazine. I had a greattime!

Well, on to the next adventure. Write me anytime@ [email protected] See yall around,
