improve the management processes for their organizations. This is accomplished
through applied, practical research. It is truly learning by doing.
The goals of the undergraduate research course are to:
Introduce students to best practices through construction process
evaluation, applied research, as well as traditional theory.
Create several networking events in which students will interact with local
construction professionals at their local projects.
Provide opportunities for students to evaluate real-world industry
practices, improve those practices, and then present their findings to local
construction firms.
Allow students to teach professionals new, lean practices to improve company
performance through simulations such as the “Parade of Trades,” the “MapGame” and the Villego Last Planner simulation.

The primary purpose of this study was to discover if there are common hardware
and/or software used by construction programs; secondary purposes were to
determine the educational degrees offered, professional certifications pursued,
and funding sources of construction computer labs. The surveyed audience was
the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC). Construction Management was the
most typical construction-related degree. Professional certifications pursued by
graduates from the class of 2013 varied depending on the school, but the most
pursued was Associate Constructor followed by LEED Green Associate and the
Fundamentals of Engineering certification. Dell® computers and Intel®
processors were the most common. The primary software used in preliminary
planning/cost estimating was MS Excel®. Autodesk® products were the primary
design authoring software. In the cases in which coordination (clash detection)
software was employed, the most used was Navisworks Manage®. Primavera®,
MS Project®, and MS Excel® were the primary scheduling software programs
used by respondents. Analysis (energy & structural) software was less used and
varied in the type used with “no software used” being the primary response.
Funding for software came primarily from operations funds. Overall, most
respondents would like improvements to their facilities, hardware upgrades,
software improvements in variety and type, and building information modeling
(BIM) upgrades. Future work could include repeating the survey annually to
baseline and assess improvements in construction school computer labs and
certifications.

This presentation explores what we mean by Business Ethics and perceptions
about the ethics of the construction industry in the recent past. I look at the
federal regulations that have been put in place since 2007 and the industry’s
response; the Corporate Industry Ethics and Compliance Initiative (CIECI). I
investigate if the construction industry is charged which a level of CorporateSocial Responsibility; i.e., should being ethical and doing no harm be our ethical
goal, or should we be actively pursuing improvement of the communities and
environment we work in?

“The [construction] job superintendent is like the conductor of a symphony
orchestra. He must see that all elements are fitted together at the right time and
sequence” (Diamant & Debo, 1988, p. 8). The job title for the supervisor on a
construction site in the United State is Superintendent, Project Superintendent or
General Superintendent. The job title for that same role in Ireland most often is
Site Manager. The authors utilized a mixed methods research protocol to
determine which site manager competencies and attributes were most important
for project success in Ireland. The sequential explanatory research design
included a survey followed by face to face interviews. The survey, completed by
59 participants, invited the construction professionals to volunteer to be

interviewed. These preliminary results are being compared to a research project
in the United States which used a very similar survey to identify the
superintendents’ competencies and attributes required for success (Gunderson &
Gloeckner, 2011).

There are three areas that need to be addressed and changes made.
BIM – What is the potential and what is keeping it from being realized. The solution is being missed.1.
Education – We are entering an unprecedented era of roles redefinition, collaboration and sharing of
models and data. Graduating students can be leaders in ushering in this era. Education needs to
get out of the past and into the future.
2.
Information – The current state of the quality, availability and timeliness of the information that
building professional needs is pathetic. The solution is simple.
3.
Change is difficult. When we brought out AutoCAD AEC in 1985 not one architect at the AIA show that year
said they would ever use CAD. My thoughts then were not would they use CAD, but how soon. The
changes needed today that I will talk about will happen, the only question is, how soon. The audience at
this talk can accelerate these needed changes by your actions; my goal is to inspire you to act.
Dennis Neeley has multiple experiences all focused upon the practice and automation of the architectural,
engineering, manufacturing, construction and real estate professions. He has started and run several
successful companies in these areas. He practiced architecture from 1970 to 1989 as a principal of the firm
Neeley/Lofrano. He was managing partner of an 80-person construction/development company (residentialand commercial projects) in the San Francisco region. He was the contributing editor of CADence magazine
for 5 years, has written two books on CAD and has taught at UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon and the
University of Washington. He is credited with being the driving force in bringing CAD to the architectural
professions with the invention of AutoCAD AEC Architectural and Mechanical. He founded ASG that merged
with Softdesk, the companies created over 30 CAD applications prior to being purchased by Autodesk.
Other innovations have included manufacturers and owner information on cd-rom and the Internet for
companies such as Kohler, Corian, Weyerhaeuser Doors, McDonald’s, Chevron, Hilton and others. In 1999
Neeley’s company Viscomm (purchased by Bricsnet, NASDAQ Europe) invented Building Center an Internet
based software suite of applications for the management of real estate information. In 2001 Neeley took
over Bricsnet as CEO. Building Center customers included Washington Mutual, American Express,
Deutsche Bank and other major companies worldwide.
In 2003 Neeley retired from the technology business and formed a new company, Design-Integration
concentrating on the private practice of architecture where he used SketchUp and Revit to design and
create contract documents. In 2004 he “un-retired from technology” and joined Tectonic Network to work
with their BIM (Building Information Modeling) business division. In March 2008 Reed Construction Data
purchased Tectonic where he managed their BIM objects creation business and developed software. In
2010 the BIM operations were spun out of Reed through the creation of SMARTBIM LLC a joint venture of
Reed and Source Squared a venture fund. He set up and managed their Revit objects, spaces creations,
and owner offerings.
He left SMARTBIM in late 2011 and started a private consulting business, Neeley Consulting. Neeley
Consulting has three goals:
Help owners and design professionals understand the significance of BIM in their future.1.
Develop automation tools to bring needed information to building professionals at the moment they
need the information.
2.
Encourage educators to change their curriculums to reflect the future of design and construction
needs and expertise.
