The YoSTI2012 was officially endorsed by the ASEAN Committee of Science and Technology (ASEAN COST) and the European Commission
during their regular policy dialogue meetings. This bi-regional policy dialogue provides today tangible results in terms of joint priority setting
and increasing ASEAN participation in the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). For example ASEAN and EU have similar policy objectives
in sectors such as the environment, food security and safety, and health. ASEAN participation represents today around 20% of all Asian
participations in FP7. Most ASEAN Member States have appointed FP7 contact points to promote the programme locally and exchange good
practice with European counterparts. The 5-year lasting policy dialogue with ASEAN COST has led to reinforcing the status and role of the
European Union as a partner for ASEAN.
This new ASEAN-EU scientific partnership offers an opportunity for scientists to jointly harness the powers of some of today’s newest
technologies such as genomics and nanotechnology to develop better diagnostics and vaccines for the world’s neglected diseases, improve
agricultural productivity, find smarter ways of producing and storing energy, and ensure future supplies of safe food and drinking water in both
regions. The aim of the YoSTI 2012 is to highlight, promote and extend the reach of scientific cooperation between the EU and ASEAN. It will be a
year long effort to stimulate interest in, and appreciation of, the processes of science and its benefits to society. By focusing on topics of strategic
importance to both regions as well as being of global relevance, the Year will give greater impact and higher visibility of S&T cooperation
between ASEAN and Europe. This bi-regional Year of Science, Technology and Innovation was officially launched in November 2011 in Hanoi. It is
the first of its kind and will be an important step to building a long-term strategic partnership between ASEAN and Europe.

The ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2012 (‘ASEAN-EU 2012’)
Recognising the fundamental importance that science and technology
plays in driving economic growth and international competitiveness, the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union
(EU) have forged a new scientific partnership this year called the “ASEAN-EU
Year of Science, Technology and Innovation 2012” (YoSTI 2012). The YoSTI2012
is a year long campaign to deepen S&T collaboration between the two regions.
It celebrates existing S&T relationshsips and build upon these to develop the next
generation of research partnerships.
What is the ASEAN-EU Year of Science, Technology, and Innovation 2012 (ASEAN-EU 2012)?
ASEAN-EU 2012 aims to:
• Coordinatejointscientificandtechnological-relatedevents

Snapshot on SEA region
ASEAN is a region comprising 10 countries in Southeast Asia and with a population of over 600 million people which is expected to
grow to over 700 million by 2030. Over the last decade this region has enjoyed some of the highest growth rates in the world. ASEAN is
now the European Unions 3rd largest trading partner outside Europe (after the US and China), and the EU is ASEAN’s 2nd largest trading
partner. However, despite the enormous progress made and the close ASEAN-EU economic partnership, many challenges remain to be
overcome: There are now more than 40 diseases which were unknown a century ago and many of these are prevalent in Southeast Asia.
Rapid urbanization is leading to a sharp rise in pollution and associated health risks. The spread of industrial agriculture may lead to a
potential rise in zootropic pandemics. And climate and environmental changes may lead to an increased risk of vector-borne disease
outbreaks in the future. Many of these problems whose solutions require scientific knowledge and expertise do not respect national
borders and in many cases research into these areas has become too costly for any one country or region to bear alone.
