IMCC Newsletter 5 Friday, 8 th March 2019 Ash Wednesday Liturgies On Wednesday, 6 th March our College celebrated Ash Wednesday with Year Group Liturgies led by Fr Dariusz and Fr Marian, and student representatives. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday with the marking of ashes, a sign of humility in which we acknowledge we are not perfect but rather a work in progress, always striving to better versions of ourselves. The cross is a sign to remind us that just as Jesus gave of Himself for others, we need to do the same. This Lent, through Project Compassion, we are making our journey with families around the world living in poverty, especially those who are unable to earn enough money to have the basic things they need like an education, medicine, food or clothing. This year, as we prepare for His death and resurrection, let us be motivated to give all of ourselves to Lent. Let us Give Lent 100%. We thank Ms Francesca Christie, Head of Religious Education, and all staff and students who contributed to the Liturgies. On Thursday, 7th March, our Year 9 students and their parents attended the launch of the 2019 Camino Program with the ‘Calling’ and ‘Departure’ ceremonies. The Camino Program is a year-long program based on the Rite Journey Program, which assists, encourages and guides the transition of our Year 9 students from childhood into adulthood. Our Year 9 students and their parents attended the sunrise ceremony where parents gave permission for their children to embark on the Camino Program. All Year 9 students wrote and read a letter of gratitude to their parents, thanking them for all that they have done for them in their childhood. This symbolic and emotional gesture was the first step of the Camino journey. The Camino Program will culminate later in the year with the much anticipated Camino Camp, when all Year 9 students will be challenged physically, intellectually and emotionally. The Camino Program is the flagship program in the Year 9 curriculum, and we look forward to seeing and sharing our students’ growth throughout the year. Mr Matthew Byrne Assistant Deputy Principal Year 9

Year 11 Retreat

On Thursday, 28th February our Year 11 students attended their Retreat Day entitled Beyond Camino at Integrity House.

It was a wonderful day including a Year Group Mass led by Fr Marian, and an enlightening session run by Ms Christie, Mr McHale and Ms Blaze on appreciating the gift of our lives and not living by the attitude of #FOMO. The day was concluded by an incredible testimonial from the Ripple Effect, once more affirming to the Year 11 students how precious their lives are and that there are consequences to their actions. Ms Francesca Christie Head of Religious Education

Year 11 River Cruise

Following a day of retreat and reflection, our Year 11 students and staff met at the Barrack Street Jetty for the annual Year 11 River Cruise. The weather was beautiful, the skyline very pretty, and the students and staff were ready for a good night together. There was dancing all night with lots of laughter and fun, including some pizza to keep the energy levels up. It was a lovely evening and I am very proud of the Year 11 students and the way they embraced the entire day and night.

Mrs Michelle Smith Assistant Deputy Principal Year 11

Mr Christian Porter Visit

On Wednesday, 6th March, the Commonwealth Attorney General and Local Member for Pearce, Mr Christian Porter, visited the College. Mr Porter spent time in our Year 10 Extension Social Sciences class, responding to a number of enthusiastic questions from the students, many of whom admitted to being aspiring lawyers themselves. Mr Porter then spent time with the Year 11 and 12 Politics and Law class in the Boardroom, fielding a number of questions relating to his role and career, but also to their Politics and Law syllabus. Amongst the discussion were the plans for extending the train line and the Mitchell Freeway, to the excitement of students living in Yanchep. Mr Porter’s visit was invaluable in that he encouraged students to aim high and dream big, and was able to enrich their understanding of the Politics and Law curriculum in doing so. Mr Kieran Parkes Politics and Law Teacher

Year 10 Referee Course During Week 2, the Year 10 Soccer Academy students gained their referee qualification. Students were given the opportunity to take part in learning how to become a referee, gaining knowledge of the game and the importance of referees in the game. Soccer Academy students now have the opportunity to referee younger games at their clubs at the weekend and earn extra pocket money. There are many ways to be involved in the game and becoming a referee, even as a non-player, is a fantastic way to give back to the community. I look forward to seeing the class in action when refereeing many Soccer competitions at the College. Miss Shawn Billam Soccer Academy Coordinator

St Andrew’s Parish News Thank you so much to all the families who joined us on Sunday. Our first Family Mass was beautiful. Family Mass will be held on the first Sunday of each month at 9am. All children are welcome. There is no practice, just the need for readers to be announced so that we can provide reading. We would love it if you could bring something to share on the day after Mass. Please support our Parish. Claire & Kendall, Your Youth Ambassadors.
