meets with a group of 6-8 Woodfords

members who, through prayer and discussion,

what it could mean for you in your spiritual journey.

A Round of Applause! A HUGE thank you to the many hands that joined in making the Yale Glee Club Concert on January 16th a grand success. Though the weather kept us on edge in the morning, all cleared for the afternoon, the parking lot was plowed and sidewalks cleared and sanded by the time the choir arrived at Woodfords.

We could not have asked for a better crew of volunteers. From providing food, setting up and preparing for our guests, making them feel welcome all the way through to cleaning up Memorial Hall and the kitchen after supper and the Cloister and Sanctuary after the concert, everyone pitched in and all ran efficiently and smoothly. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We are also deeply appreciative of the partnership with the Boy Singers of Maine, as our work together made the concert logistics and publicity so successful. The students from Yale were most appreciative of the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of everyone they met at Woodfords. The benefit to everyone was the beautiful music the Yale Glee Club shared with us that evening.

The Snow-Storm Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,

Arrives the snow, and, driving o'er the fields,

Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air

Hides hills and woods, the river, and the heaven,

And veils the farm-house at the garden's end.

The sled and traveller stopped, the courier's feet

Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit

Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed

In a tumultuous privacy of storm.

-excerpt by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Lenten Soup and Study:

“My God, My God: Why?

The Lament Psalms”

“Lament: A passionate expression of grief

or sorrow, oen portrayed in music, poetry

or song. A prayerful plea for God to help

and /or a complaint to God over social

injusce.”

Most of us experience sadness and despair in our ordinary daily lives.

Friends and relaves get a lousy diagnosis, relaonship end poorly,

people we love die. Couple that with the current chaos in the world and

somemes we want to scream: “Why God? Why?”

As we approach Lent once again, we oen think of it as a very dark me

that culminates in death. And yet it is also a me of real/tangible

catharsis and renewed relaonships with God and each other.

I invite you to join me in a consideraon of the lament psalms and

conversaons about your own experiences of lament. Not only will we

read and interpret the Psalms of Lament, we’ll also have the opportunity

to write our own laments – personal and corporate: a great opportunity

for both creavity and release.

SAVE THE DATE! LAY MINISTRY WORKSHOP

Sooner or later, we all have to make a decision about how to care

for our loved ones when they can no longer care for

themselves. How do we make this decision without the burden of

guilt? What are the spiritual components in making this

decision? How does our faith instruct us? What do we look for in a

facility? What is it that elders REALLY want as they approach their

final years? Using Atul Gawande's helpful book, "Being Mortal"

and a variety of faith resources we'll explore some of these

quesons. And, as always, while this workshop is designed for Lay

Ministers, it is open to all our Woodfords family who might be

struggling with this issue. The date: Saturday, February 20 from

9am to noon. Leadership for this event will be Rev. Jim, Elder

Chaplain and, Rev. Elaine Armstrong, Hospice Chaplain. To register,

look for the sign-up sheet in the cloister or register by calling Rev.

Jim at 774-8243 ext. 106 and leave a message.

“How Come You Didn’t Come to See Me?” Believe it or not, our ministers unfortunately hear this all the

me– and oen even if it isn’t expressed to our ministers, it

is to fellow parishioners. It has been several years since

ministers or lay visitors were allowed to peruse hospital

paent lists. The fact is they no longer are allowed to do so. This means

they have to rely on you or your family or friends to keep them informed

if you are in the hospital or other medical facility. If you know you are

going to be in a hospital or rehab unit, please let Rev. Carolyn or Rev. Jim

know your plans as soon as you make them. If you are in the hospital

because of an emergency, please ask a member of your family or even

the nursing staff to call the church office and leave the informaon on

Rev. Carolyn or Rev. Jim’s voicemail. Your ministry staff want to be there

for you, and will make every effort to do so. But first you’ve got to let

them know the need. 774-8243;

Winter Storm Closings For Sunday Morning Church Services: Rev. Carolyn and Rev. Jim

will discuss the weather Sunday morning and make a decision by

7:00 AM as to whether or not to cancel the worship service. IF

they cancel, John will put the informaon on the church

telephone message and on TV Channel 6 WCSH & Channel 8 WMTW.

For all other events, when schools are closed, events are USUALLY

cancelled. We will try to constantly update the church telephone

message. If your event is to be held in the evening and schools were open,

but the weather has worsened, we will ATTEMPT to nofy aBendees by

email or telephone.

Schubert Mass in G and the Portland String Quartet SUNDAY, March 6, 10:00 am The Portland String Quartet will accompany the Chancel Choir during the 10:00 am worship service on Sunday, March 6. Central to worship will be Franz Schubert’s Mass in G Major. As one of his best known shorter masses, composed in 1815, the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Benedictus will used throughout the communion service. In addition, the PSQ will offer additional music by Schubert as prelude and postlude to our worship together. Music leads our thoughts to God and is an important element of our worship life. We hope you will join us for this wonderful annual service.

Join the Easter Choir! We welcome singers who would like to join the Chancel Choir for the Lenten/Easter season even if you may not be able to commit to singing the

rest of the year. This is a great way of enhancing your Lenten journey. Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 7- 8:30 pm in the music room (under the chancel). We will begin rehearsing Easte r music in mid-February . We have also prepared a number of ‘guest ’ folders for anyone who is curious about what singing in the cho ir is like and would like to visit on a Thursday evening. You just might have so much fun you'll want to retu rn on a regular basis. Please contact Rebecca or Paul Schnell with any que stions or comments about the choir music program. ____________________________________________________________

One Way to Beat the Winter Blues…

Change your perspective!

Shakespeare once wrote that “There is nothing either good or bad but makes it so.” We shape our reaction

to the world. Hard as it may sound, we can try to change our perspective and see winter as a time of excitement and wonder. We experience snow. We see variety. We can better appreciate a warm fire and hot cup of cocoa.
