ASHBEAMS committee develops safety standards

ASHBEAMS Committee Develops Safety Standards The ASHBEAMS Safety Congress rec- onvened in Dallas in July for a follow-up meeting, where proposed safety stan- dards were outlined. They are currently being drafted for the ASHBEAMS annual convention this October in Crystal City, Virginia. The Safety Congress was extremely successhtl, according to Jan Tronzo, with more than 60 attendees. There was an even mix of participants, including repre- sentatives from NFNA, National EMS Pilots Association, Helicopter Aviation International, and National Flight Para- medics Association. The participants were divided into four subgroups, which tackled the priority concerns identified during the March congress. The groups were as follows: 1) Safety Standards, 2) Data Collections & Hardware, 3) Pilot Pressures/Stressers, and 4} Crew Training and Recurrent Training. The subgroups discussed problems outlined at the March Safety Congress and provided the Safety Committee with recommendations that would facilitate the development of gen- eral safety standards for the aeromedical industry. Three needs were outlined for the Safety Committee during discussions and included the following: 1}General safety standards developed, implemented, and enforced by ASHBEAMS; 2) Regular safety awareness publications that address current issues in aeromedical safety; and 3) Ongoing data collection regarding safety issues. Subchairmen were elected for each of the three pri- orities outlined.
