All our families are encouraged to participate in our Enhancement Sessions as they are a terrific way to not only assist our school but also network and make connections with other families. The school enhancement fee of $200 will be discounted if two or more sessions are attended. If you intend on attending our Enhancement Sessions, you may exclude the $200 fee from your annual school fee and levy total. Naturally, if by the end of the year you have not attended the working bee session/s as intended, this will remain on your account. Some families have indicated that they are happy to attend the Enhancement Sessions without claiming the $200 discount. PRINCIPAL’S NEWS Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,
End of Term Three It only seems like yesterday that I was writing about the end of Term Two. This term we have endured a long, cold winter. At St Michael’s we have enjoyed another jam-packed term filled with great learning such as our upcoming School Performance: Into Africa, Book Week, Father’s Day Stall, the Resilience Project, Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day, the Book Fair, Year 5/6 Public Speaking Course, Feast of the Assumption, African Drumming, the Athletics Carnival, Prep 2018 sibling interviews, Father’s Night, Senior Hoop Time, SRC, Movie Nights, preparations for the Fair, implementation of Respectful Relationships, we welcomed three new families, experienced Learning Walks, listened to and laughed with guest author Raymond J Bartholomeuz, completed STEM projects, learning in Literacy and Mathematics and so much more. We’ve experienced sadness and now we look forward to the hope that comes when the sun shines on us in Term Four. What an incredible term!
Sacrament of Confirmation We continue to pray for our students who are embarking on their Confirmation journey. Fr Laurence, Gail, Erin and the Year 5/6 teachers have been working closely together to ensure a deep understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation for our children. Thank you to the Hawkins family who hosted the Home Mass last Tuesday. The next Home Masses are in Week 1 and 2 of Term Four. The Family Faith Night is on tonight, Thursday 14th September. All students who wish to make their Confirmation are asked to attend.
School Performance: ‘Into Africa’ We are pleased to be able to offer extra tickets which are on sale for our biennial school performance of ‘Into Africa’ through the school office. Please hurry and purchase your tickets. The reason for the increase in ticket price in 2017 is because the previous performance incurred a loss of approximately $2,500. We endeavour to save money wherever possible, such as making our own costumes and puppets from recycled materials however the cost of lighting, staging, licenses, staffing and sundry are expensive. We certainly do not intend to make a profit. Our aim is to cover the costs of the production. I wish to express my deep gratitude to the countless parents who have been sewing, gluing, painting and making the puppets and costumes. The teachers, students and parents have all been working extremely hard and the production promises to be a wonderful, spectacular show.
The Official Opening and Blessing of the Learning Centre On Thursday 19th October at 4:00pm the Learning Centre will be official opened and blessed by Archbishop Hart. There are quite a number of invited guests attending and therefore Fr Laurence has given permission for the school to finish early. The children will be dismissed at 3:00pm on Thursday the 19th, in an effort to lessen traffic congestion and to provide time for the Staff to set up. All families are welcome to attend this event. If you will be attending, please RSVP to [email protected] by Friday 22nd September.
Farewell to Vanessa It is with a great deal of sadness that our community says goodbye to Vanessa our amazing Office Assistant. Vanessa has worked at St Michael’s since 2015 and in her time with us she has been innovative, hard-working, compassionate and provided a great deal of support to me personally. We wish Vanessa well as she moves to ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) to continue working with her incredible admin skills. I will be advertising the position shortly and interviewing in the holidays.
Footy Colours Day: Friday 22nd September Just a reminder to wear your Footy Colours next Friday 22nd September for the donation of a gold coin. All codes are welcome. If you don’t follow Football, wear your favourite colours. All proceeds go towards the Family Fun Fair in December.
Parent Requests 2018 If you have any urgent requests for your child for 2018, please send them to me before Friday 20th October. As you are aware, I do my best to accommodate wherever possible. Some classes in 2017 were quite uneven due to late parent requests. To prevent this from occurring again, I will not be making changes after Friday 20th October. Please send requests to [email protected] with your valid reasons.

Social Media Forum: Wednesday 11th October On Wednesday 11th October at 2:30pm, I would like to hold a social media forum for parents to discuss issues related to social media and our school policies in this area. We are in the process of reviewing and updating our Social Media Policy and we value the feedback and ideas you may have. We will meet in the staffroom. I look forward to partnering with you to ensure we are keeping our students safe online while utilising the benefits and learning opportunities social media provides.
The Resilience Project: Wednesday 6th September Thank you to the parents who attended Hugh van Cuylenberg’s presentation last Wednesday night. The feedback received from parents and staff demonstrates the importance of engaging with the Resilience Project. I encourage every family to practice Hugh’s antidote to anxiety; Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness. To build resilience and lessen anxiety please answer the following three questions yourself and with your child/ren everyday:
1. What worked well for you today? 2. Who are you most grateful for today and why? 3. What are you most looking forward to about tomorrow?
https://theresilienceproject.com.au/
Father’s Night Thank you to Stephen Hoy for organising the Father’s Night. It was wonderful to have such a great attendance and to celebrate Father’s in our community.
Father’s Day Stall Thank you to Sarah Griffith, Caroline Gleeson, Belinda O’Callaghan, Grace Justus, Rebecca Mardling and Stacey McKenna for organising and running the Father’s day stall.
CareMonkey Thank you to those who have returned their CareMonkey form. If you are yet to complete this, please do so as soon as possible. There has been a delay in getting the invites sent out to parents so thank you for your patience.
School Enhancement Saturday Thank you to Tim Wrathall, the PFA and the parents who attended and worked at the school enhancement session. The school looked clean and tidy and the container is now empty. If you have not yet received your $200 rebate by attending two sessions, I urge you to register for the next enhancement on Friday 27th October 2017 by logging onto www.schoolinterviews.com.au the code is MA4ZT. Many hands make light work and we are always grateful for your attendance. The PFA provides a BBQ and refreshments.
Liturgical Sculpture We are very excited to be raising money for a beautiful religious sculpture to complete Stage 1 of the Masterplan. This religious piece is the most important aspect of our build as it tangibly demonstrates to everyone who we are and what we stand for as a Catholic school. As part of this building project, we are seeking donations to the School Building Fund.
These donations will free up funds which will allow us to pay for the liturgical sculpture. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. All families and parishioners who make a donation will have their name etched on a plaque to commemorate their generosity and support of St Michael’s Parish School. Our deep gratitude goes to the families and parishioners who have already donated so generously.
Condolences My deepest condolences go to Martin, Tracey, Mali and Lila on the death of Martin’s mother, Lyn Otley. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this sad time. My prayers and thoughts are also with Maria, Emma and Amy on the death of Neil. We keep your family in our hearts at this sad time. Marisa Matthys Principal [email protected]

STEM NEWS
Automotive Engineering Class Dear Parents, Our vision for STEM at St Michael’s is to build a community of animated learners who are passionate about learning more about science, technology, engineering and maths. An area that many students are interested in learning more about is how automotive engineering and engines work. With this in mind, we will be launching the St Michael’s Automotive Engineering Program. Ford has supplied an engine for our students to take apart and rebuild which will be a core component of this class. The class will be held at 8:00am on Tuesday mornings in the Stem Centre (Room 11). All students are invited to apply to attend the class as places will be limited to 20 every term. This is to ensure that students are working in a safe environment. The first 20 students to send an email to me expressing their interest will have the opportunity to attend the class next term. For any further questions, please email me. FATHER’S NIGHT RECAP On Thursday 31st August, our Dads organised a wonderful night of entertainment and games for the kids. We had more than 80 dads and their children attend the event and the feedback we have received has been very positive. Following a "Dude Perfect" theme, we had more than 15 activities that included all sorts of balls, nets, frisbees, hoola hoops, eggs, cans and more. We were fortunate to have a small army of willing volunteers that we should individually recognise - Mark Merida, Chris Murray, Paul Shaw, Michael Byrne, Jerome Durkin, John O'Brien, Tas Tudor, Rudolf Lameijn, Simon Martin, Nick Grogan, Patrick O'Callaghan, Nathan Grigg, Colin Signorelli, Daniel Naismith, Craig Harris, Travis Mardling, Simon Lanigan and Stu Barclay. These dads cooked and delivered a gourmet menu, manned the bar, arranged all of the activities for the kids and did all of the cleaning up. Along with this committee, there were many other dads and children who helped where possible on the evening. It is amazing what free chocolate can achieve! We would also like to acknowledge Ashburton Meats, Barbecues Galore, Fresh Central, Mr. Stubbles Barber Shop and Bakers Delight for their generous support of the event. Thanks also to Renee Hoy and Kate Merida for their 'anonymous' assistance prior to the night. All of the dads thoroughly enjoyed seeing the kids have so much fun. Stay tuned for a Dad’s Night (minus the kids) at the RSL in the near future. Stephen Hoy (Caitlin 1/2 R & Sam 3/4 HA)

We hope you’ve found the time to read the documents and started thinking of how you may be able to assist us in collecting items for our Silent Auction or some of the things on our ‘Items We Need’ list. We appreciate any help you may be able to give and look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

Hi Everyone! The term is almost over! The last couple of weeks have seen some yummy cornflake biscuits and great progress on our sewing projects. These have been all the rage at the program lately and some children have even made more than one! Next we will be moving onto making squares for some curtains in the Supper Room. PLEASE BE AWARE – from Friday 15th September to Friday 22nd September, we will be located in the Art Room for Before and After Care. PLEASE – If you have any empty plastic bottles, we would love to have them in the program! ‘Take 3’ Initiative – Our photo wall is needing some love and attention so please send through photos of your children putting 3 pieces of rubbish in the bin, please email these through to us at [email protected]. Fact: Plastic is the most common element that is found in the ocean. It is harmful for the environment as it does not get broken down easily and is often considered as food by marine animals. RSPCA Donations – Please keep them coming! We ask for anyone who has any old blankets, towels, manchester (pillow cases, flat sheets, fitted sheets) or pet accessories such as bowls, cat poles, bedding, etc., to bring these to the After-Care Room and we will donate them to the RSPCA on behalf of St Michael's! The children have done a wonderful job of sewing mice for the kittens and we will continue this project this term as well. Our Star of the Week Awards go to… Kaitlyn R for her help and bright smile! AND Thenuk W for his excellent enthusiasm in coming to After Care! So please come and see us! Kristy Team Leader
