“So close to God”
On our way to Oklahoma a few years ago, Jane and I happened upon a chapel literally inside a forest. THORNCROWN CHAPEL is located near Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Immediately you will be struck by two things; the immense glass walls and ceiling and the fact that all around you are trees. This was the dream of Jim Reed, a retired school teacher who dreamed of a glass chapel that might inspire people to be ‘so close to God.’
I remember walking from the parking lot, through the dense forest, without seeing anything that might resemble a building. And then, almost like rising out of the ground, and totally engulfed by the trees, the chapel is visible, with its open
doors, inviting you inside. You don’t ever get a sense that you leave the forest behind, because of the glass that is all around you. On the day we were there, the light from the sun was being filtered by the trees. The feeling is one of peace and serenity.
According to Reed’s son, Doug Reed, his father was not a particularly religious man. In fact, the land was originally bought by the elder Reed and his wife for the purpose of a retirement home. Jim and his wife had planned to spend the rest of their lives among the majestic Ozarks, but then plans changed.
According to Doug, “[Jim] wasn’t the only one who admired his location, however, and people would often stop near his house to gain a better view of the beautiful Ozark hills. Instead of fencing them out, Jim chose to invite them in. He decided he and his wife should build a glass chapel in the woods to inspire their visitors.”
While Jim and his wife faced many obstacles in the building of this chapel, it was completed and is currently used for weddings and other functions. There is, however, no formal faith community that uses this building. It is simply there to
1
be an inspiration to those traveling through the Ozarks. And indeed it is.
Upon further reflection, however, I would just as soon be gathered together with the people of God, you, the ones who make up the faith communities of Our Savior’s -Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church and First
Presbyterian Church and to see YOUR faces reflecting the very presence of God, each Sunday (and at other times, as well). There is holiness and an inspiration which far exceeds any architectural wonders that we can build. What a joy it is to be together with the family of God, to hear the sounds of laughter, conversation and prayer, singing and silence, as each Sunday we come ‘so close to God’
Wherever your journeys take you this summer, may God stay close to you!
Pastor Tom
