**Ashton First School News** Friday 26th June 2020 It was been a hot and sticky week so far and we have been dodging the heat of the day by staying inside or under shade. We hope that those of you at home have been able to make the most of the lovely weather too and haven’t got too hot. Don’t forget to keep checking our website as when we have a new story we put it here. Thank you to Georga’s parents who gave us a
wonderful fruit basket this week, we have all enjoyed it. If you think you may be entitled to receive free school meals please speak to us.
You can check your eligibility by looking at the website below. You would then be
able to receive food vouchers throughout the summer holidays this year.

return it to their email address whether your child has been at school or at home. Thank you. An

Acorn Class
This week our home and school learners have enjoyed a theme of dragons…
Early Years
Inspired by the story of George and the Dragon, we have made dragons out of egg boxes,
played with the castles and dragons, practised new songs (and made our own) and mastered a
new game which we played in the park where the children had to save the princess from the
dragon. We have experimented with ‘hot and cold’, watching ice cubes melt, and the rate at
which they do in different locations. We have also learnt about fire safety and enjoyed a visit
from Daisy’s froglets!
Reception Bubble
The big excitement of the week was the discovery of an enormous nest at forest school!
Coloured feathers, charred logs, burnt toast and tracks through the undergrowth all added to
the mystery and excitement as we put our best detective skills to use to find out what has been
visiting the site and then on Friday we found a golden egg!
Meanwhile, back at school we have been busy making a time capsule
to bury in the school grounds and we hope that when we are very big
and in Year 5 , just before we leave Ashton School , we will be able to
find and dig up our time capsule and see how things have changed!
And at home …Benjamin has been performing dragon puppet
plays, Aubrey and Lottie have been building castles of ice and
sand, Ava has drawn some beautiful dragons and Beth has been
making treasure and eggs for her garden dragon.
Pirate Bubble
Another busy week with our crew. The children have been learning more about money and
more about measuring in maths. In English they have been following the story of Captain Plank
and are developing their own story about him. In DT we have been modelling with clay, making
pirates and parrots and we are about half way through our pirate ships where we have cut,
sawed (with a real saw!) and stuck together our models.
Hawthorn
Our lovely home learners in Hawthorn continue to do lots of wonderful things at home and lots
of you have made some super things with your activity bags. George made a pom pom owl
called Bob, Gracie made tasty pirate biscuits, Monty recreated his version of VanGogh’s
Sunflowers and Faye did her little ball of treasure and she managed to get 24 items beginning
with P into her ball!
Mrs Tulley’s Bubble
We had a very exciting Monday morning greeting lots of new children into our bubble and
seeing others come every day this week. It has been absolutely lovely see more of our Year 3
and Year 4 Key Workers and we have been very busy! Our English this week has been based
around our new class reader; The House That Sailed Away and we have been following the
antics of the family as they floated off to sea!! In Science we have been studying and watching
the germination of our broad bean seed and learnt lots of new scientific terminology like seed
coat, hilum and micropyl. Ask your child if they can tell you what geotropic and phototropic
mean too. We have had some lovely walks and visited Charlie’s ducklings too, and he showed us
how knowlegable he is about his new flock. We have enjoyed the sunshine and even got
creative with where we ate this week!!
Willow Class
Our lovely home-learners are keeping very busy too, Henry is getting a
new Puppy, Leo has enjoyed water fights in the garden and reading on
his decking, Eliza enjoyed finding out where food came from and Indie
was very excited by her
bag of goodies.
Mrs T’s Bubble
We started the week off by planting some sunflowers and bean plants. We are keeping a bean
diary to describe the changes and today we noticed quite a few changes as we had soaked the
seed in water for two days. We have been looking at the video ‘Home Sweet Home’ and doing
some descriptive writing as well as creating some graphs and charts in maths using data about
animals that live in the wild.
Oak Class
In Oak class we have received some lovely photos of what the children have been doing this
week. Amelie has had an art day and produced some lovely creative pieces, Chloe has been
doing some descriptive writing and William is looking forward to the arrival of a new puppy. Ella
tried out one of the Science investiations we sent out and had some fantastic results.
