In Preparation for the Lord’s Supper

The Bible tells us (1 Corinthians 11:23-29) that it is vitally important that we understand and believe that the Lord’s Supper is a participation in the very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. To receive the blessings of this Sacrament to our benefit it is necessary that we examine our hearts and our lives. Please read and prayerfully consider the following:

I believe that I am sinful by nature and in need of forgiveness. I confess that I have sinned in my thoughts, words, and deeds. I believe I am forgiven only through faith in Jesus Christ. I confess that in, with, and under the bread and wine I receive the very

Body and Blood of Jesus. I promise by the power of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life and

strive to live a God-pleasing life. As members of Jesus’ family, we have a responsibility to teach and encourage one another so that we receive the blessing intended for us in this Sacrament. Out of sincere love, we respectfully ask that those who have not been instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church please speak with a pastor before attending the Lord’s Supper. St. Luke’s offers “Explorations” an adult information class for those high school age and above desiring to be confirmed. Children are confirmed at the end of their eighth grade year after completing instruction. We are happy to meet with you and discuss any special circumstances or needs you may have.

Communion Procedure Note: Anyone who cannot come to the communion rail may receive the Lord’s Supper in the pew. Simply let a pastor or usher know your request and sit in one of the front rows. Those who are not communing are invited to come forward for a blessing (please cross your arms across your chest to indicate your desire for a blessing).

Fifth Sunday of Easter

April 29, 2018 Connected to Christ - Starting Over Series Introduction - Part 4 - A New Start

Introduction: Our Board of Directors has adopted a vision statement to propel St. Luke’s into the future: Connected to Christ to Connect to Community. Starting in January we’re focusing our attention on the first part - Connected to Christ - by studying Jesus’ Sermon the Mount in Matthew 5-7. With this sermon Jesus launched his followers into the world. Over the next few months we’ll look at what Jesus said about a New Approach, a New Attitude, New Action, and a New Start. Jesus’ New Approach is a movement of God’s people into the world as Salt and Light. But, that will require a whole New Attitude. Our natural way of thinking is an “if...then” attitude. If I do good and work hard, then, God will bless me and I’ll have a good life. Jesus calls us to a “because...therefore” attitude. Because God has blessed me completely, forgiving all my sins and giving me the ultimate, eternal good life, therefore, I now seek to serve and obey Him. We’ve just finished Part 3 where we learned how followers of Jesus live out their new identity. Now, it’s time for a bold new movement in our personal lives and our lives together as a congregation.

As We Gather:

With an exclamation point, Jesus now assures, promises, and invites us to act boldly. In light of the incredible blessings pronounced on us by Jesus (5:3-12) and the challenging life of following Him (5:13-7:6), He graciously implores us to Ask! Seek! Knock! It is the equivalent of saying, “Our God is so generous, don’t be shy.” The Golden Rule is the summary of the sermon series - Connected to Jesus to Connect to Community.

God Grants Us The Gift Of Forgiveness

Invocation: P: In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; 18:20)

Confession:

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.

We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

P: O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

God Speaks To Us From His Word

First Reading : Acts 8:26-40 (ESV)

26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. 27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” 30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. 33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” 34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a

serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

as he passed through he preached the gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

Hymn of the Day: “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us”

Sermon

1. How deep the Father's love for us How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure How great the pain of searing loss The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory

2. Behold the Man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished

3. I will not boast in anything

No gifts no pow’r no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection Why should I gain from His reward I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom

Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
