Peninsula Park Apartments • 4855 West Fuqua • Houston, TX 77045 Ask the Expert Question: I‘m planning on attending my first office holiday party. What “rules” should I follow? Answer: First, try not to think of the event as a party, but rather an off-site business meeting. Dress and act accordingly. The appropriate attire for a festive evening is stylish, yet conservative. Plan to mingle with coworkers and include spouses in conversation. Most importantly, minimize alcohol intake. Loud talk and boorish behavior will be remembered long after the party has ended. Holiday, Decorating Policies At Peninsula Park, we encourage our residents to decorate for the holidays. We do ask, however, that you keep the following policies in mind when decorating: • Please use picture hangers to hang decorations and garland. • Use care not to block hallways, exits or exit routes. • Please refrain from using window stickers or decals. • Please ensure that lights are not directed into other homes. • Burning candles and other incendiary devices are not permitted. Thank you for your cooperation! Silent Nights We understand that the holiday season is a time for celebration. During this joyous season, we ask that you please show consideration to your neighbors who may prefer to celebrate quietly. Please remind all guests to keep their voices down and turn stereo, television and car radio volumes to low. Your neighbors will appreciate your thoughtfulness and your courtesy will ensure we all enjoy our silent nights. Thank you for your assistance! Healthier Holiday Cooking Tips A generation or two ago, people ate more food with a lot of fat, but they still weighed less than people weigh today. It was probably because they were involved in physical work instead of sitting at a desk. Or maybe they ate less every day. Whatever the cause, tweaking Grandma‘s recipes is a great idea. Some examples: • Refrigerate the gravy and scoop off the hardened fat before reheating and serving. • Use less bread in turkey dressing and more onions, garlic, celery and vegetables. Moisten with chicken or vegetable broth and applesauce. • Make mashed potatoes with skim milk, chicken broth, garlic powder and Parmesan cheese instead of whole milk and butter. Some recipes call for fat-free sour cream. • Try a new recipe for eggnog: four bananas, 1 1/2 cups skim milk, 1 1/2 cups plain nonfat yogurt, 1/4 teaspoon rum extract and some ground nutmeg. Puree the ingredients and sprinkle the nutmeg on top. • For dessert, make pumpkin pie using two egg whites for each whole egg and replace cream with fat-free evaporated milk. Replace heavy cream in cheesecakes and cream pies with evaporated milk. Top cakes with powdered sugar, fresh fruit or fruit sauce. • Remove the skin from roasted turkey before eating it or placing it on a serving dish. Holidayshopping

wisdom

That jingling you hearmay not be bells. Couldbe what's left in your

pocket. For those caught up inthe buying frenzy of the holi-days, Christmas Eve could findthem with a handful of changein their pockets and little else. Of course, every year you

think you'll avoid the rush byaccumulating gifts throughoutthe year. That would be smart, but it doesn't do much good inNovember and December andthe shopping list looms.A survey by The Wall Street

Journal shows that more of usare controlling credit card debtby adopting new traditionsthat reduce the loot under thetree.

Women do most of theChristmas shopping, saysEileen Fischer of York Univer-sity in Canada, who studiesconsumer behavior. They givegifts to reinforce relationshipswith spouses, kids, in-laws, co-workers, friends and helpers. Here is some classic advice

on keeping your holidays af-fordable:

• If you have a multitude ofrelatives to buy for, talk withthem about exchanging cardsthis year. They will be happy

to do it in most cases.• Decide in advance how

much you will spend on gifts.• Give gift certificates to

teens. They keep you withinyour specific amount, andteens enjoy shopping.

• Skip the stocking stu,ersaltogether.

• Shop with a specific list, especially online where easyclicks add up to big money.

• Don't buy for yourself atthe same time. Stick to theproject.

• Financial advisor JaneBryant Quinn says: Add upyour consumer debt and writethe number at the top of yourshopping list or computer.

• An advantage of buyingless: Less time spent openinggifts. It can drag on and on fora large group. The holidays are more joyful

when you know you can paythe bills as they begin arrivingin 2020.

• At a dinner, eat just foods you like, not some of everything. • Sit farther away from a bu(et table so seconds (and thirds) are lessconvenient. • Eat slowly. It takes 20 minutes for your body torecognize a full feeling. • Drink water with your meals. • Whenmixed drinks are being served, ask for club soda, water, or diet sodain your drink. • Visit with many people so you have something todo in addition to eating and drinking. • At home, keep cookies, candy, and other treats out of sight so you won’t snack every timeyou walk by them.

How to avoid the 5-poundholiday weight gain

• Chicken Soup.

• Garlic.

• Pumpkin seeds.
