American National Standards Institute) authorized the organization of a Sectional Committee
(laternamedStandardsCom mittee) on the Standardization ofPipe Flanges for thepurpose
of unifying nd urtherdevelop ing the langed nd threaded fitting standard s in force in
theUnited States.Designated as jointsponsors were he AmericanSociety of Mechanical

reorgani/.ed as the ASME B 1 6 Committee, with ASMEoperating s ole ponso r under
proceduresaccredited by ANSI.

1961, by Mr. Fritz Sornm er. Patent rights
for
theUnited States , wh ere the system is inding
use in high rise developments, were obtained i n late 1969. The Manufacturers Standardization
Society o f the Valve and Fittings Industry developed and approved SP-74
in
September
1970. A few monthsater, the

In 1982,Subcommittee B was equested to dev elop a standard or ast iron material.
Following approval by the BI 6 Main Cornmittee and the ASM E Supervisory Board, approval
was granted by ANSI for ASME/ANSI
