MessagefromtheChair My formal service on the Executive Committee of theAmerican Society ofMechanical Engineers(ASME) Applied Mechanics Division (AMD) has come to an end. I have served as Chair of theDivisionfrom2011‐2012andasacommitteememberforthepastfiveyears.Ithasbeenanamazingfive years. During my term I have had the opportunity to work with an exceptional group ofmechanicianswhovolunteertheirtimetoserveonthiscommittee.IwasveryluckytohavebeenabletofollowinthefootstepsofoneofthemostdedicatedandknowledgeablecommitteemembersI know, Tayfun Tezduyar, from Rice University. Tayfun is the sage of everything AMD. All mycommittee members, Ken Liechti (Vice‐Chair) of University of Texas, Larry Bergman (ProgramChair), of theUniversityof Illinois atUrbana‐Champaign,HuajianGao (ProgramVice‐Chair) fromBrown University and PetersWriggers (Secretary) from the Leibniz Universität Hannover, havemadethisagreatjourney.

As I leave the committee Iwould like towelcome in our newest incoming Executive Committeemember, Arun Shukla of the University of Rhode Island. Arun’s qualifications will make him anexcellentadditiontothiscommittee.

Timoshenko,Koiter,Drucker, Caughey, Belytschko andHughesMedal/AwardCommittees duringthefinalyearofappointment.The overall aims of the Division, as stated in the AMD bylaws is “to foster the intelligent use ofmechanicsbyengineersand todevelop this science to serve theneedsof engineering.Mechanics isconstrued to include fundamentalanalyticalandexperimental studies in the fieldsofbiomechanics,composite materials, computing methods, dynamics, elasticity, experimental methods, fracture,geomechanics, hydrodynamics, lubrication, fluid dynamics, mechanical properties of materials,micromechanics,plasticityand failure,platesand shells,wavepropagationand related fields… theApplied Mechanics Division is not primarily concerned with design data, but with methods andapproachesthatyieldanew levelofunderstandingandwhichmayprovidethebasisfornewdesigninformation.”TheAppliedMechanicsDivisionoftheASMEisnotonlyoneoftheoldest(foundedin1927)but,isalsothelargestdivisionofthesixdivisionsthatmakeuptheASMEBasicEngineeringGroup.Thesedivisionsare:AppliedMechanics(4958),Bioengineering(1,983),FluidsEngineering(2902),HeatTransfer(3,303),Materials(1,832)andTribology(463).TheASME2011InternationalMechanicalEngineeringCongressandExposition(IMECE)washeldin November 2011 in Denver, Colorado. Every year the AMD conference track,Mechanics ofSolids,StructuresandFluidshasdoneexceptionallywell.The2011‐Track12,chairedbyLarryBergman and vice‐chair Huajian Gao, was a great success with 29 symposia and about 400presentations.Also,theupcoming2012,chairedbyHuajianGaoandvice‐chairPeterWriggerswillbenoexception,infact,itmaybeoneofthemostsuccessfulconferenceswehaveeverhad.Thissuccessisduetothededicationandhardworkofallinvolved.Highlights,of2011ASME‐IMECETrack‐12,weretheplenarylectureswhichweredeliveredbyKenChong, George Washington University, Washington, DC. Ken spoke on “Nuclear Energy: Safety,Production,MechanicsResearchandChallenges” andDavidGartling, SandiaNationalLaboratory,Albuquerque,NMwhospokeon“AFiniteElementMethodforAblationProblems”.The 2011 Daniel C. Drucker Medalist, John Rudnicki, Northwestern University spoke on“FormationandExtensionofLocalizedCompactioninPorousSandstones”.The2011WarnerT.KoiterMedalist,JamesG.Simmonds,TheUniversityofVirginiaspokeon“TheSimpleLogicofClassicalNonlinearThermodynamicShellTheory”.2011ASMEAppliedMechanicsDivision(AMD)AnnualHonorsandAwardsBanquet

EveryyearinNovemberIlookforwardtotheAnnualASMEAMDHonorsandAwardsBanquet,thislastyearitwasheldinDenver,Colorado,andIhadthepleasureofpresidingoverthisveryspecialevening. ThiswasthemostmemorableeventofmytermasAMDChair.We,mechanicians,cometogethertospendafewfantastichourswherewevisitwithourcolleaguesandfriendsfromaroundtheworld and honormany of them for their contributions in our field ofmechanics. I had thepleasure of presenting the ASME‐AMD Division and Society awards, the AMD Student PaperCompetition awards, the AMD‐Haythornthwaite Foundation Travel Awards and thanks to thegenerosityoftheRobertMandMaryHaythornthwaiteFoundationthisyearwehadanewawardtogive, the2011AMD‐HaythornthwaiteResearch InitiationGrantsAwards. FellowofASME:ThisyearIhadthepleasureofpresentinganadditionalawardattheAMDBanquet.IwashonoredtopresentFu‐PenChiang(StonyBrookUniversity)withhisFellowshipCertificateforbeingelectedFellow of ASME. The ASME confers the Fellow grade of membership on worthy candidates torecognizetheiroutstandingengineeringachievements.Fu‐PenistrulydeservingofthisprestigioushonorandIwashappytobeapartofthis.

HaythornthwaiteFoundation:As I mentioned The Robert M. and Mary Haythornthwaite Foundation has been a generoussupporteroftheAppliedMechanicsDivision.Theysupportscientificresearch,primarilyresearchin the fieldofTheoretical andAppliedMechanics. TheFoundationnowsponsors the threeAMDawardcategoriesbelow.

The2011AMD‐HaythornthwaiteResearchInitiationGrantsAwards:ThispastyeartheAppliedMechanicsDivision,throughthegenerositytheHaythornthwaiteFoundation, agreed to sponsor a new divisional award, theHaythornthwaiteResearchInitiationGrant.Thisnewgranttargetsuniversityfacultythatareatthebeginningoftheiracademiccareersengaged in research in theoreticalandappliedmechanics. Excitingnews!TheHaythornthwaiteFoundationhas very generously agreed to increasethe amount of their donation for these research initiation grants. And AMD will alsogenerously match a portion of this contribution to increase the number/amount ofinitiationgrantawards.The2011AMD‐HaythornthwaiteFoundationStudentTravelAward:TheAppliedMechanics Division, Executive Committee continues to seekways to involveandencourageyoungermembersandparticularlygraduatestudentsintheactivitiesoftheAMDDivision.

Through the annual support of TheRobertM. andMaryHaythornthwaiteFoundation sixtravel grants were awarded in 2011. These travel grants are offered to U.S. graduatestudentscurrentlyenrolledatU.S.universitiesorcollegespresentingapaperinanyfieldofapplied mechanics. Track12MechanicsofSolids,StructuresandFluids atASME IMECE2011 inDenver,COwasonceagaintheprincipalfocusofMechanics‐relatedtopics.TheAMDExecutiveCommitteeextendsitsthankstotheAMDTechnicalCommitteesandaffiliatedASMEgroupsaswellastheTopicChairsandCo‐Chairsfortheirconsiderableeffort,leadingtoasuccessfulevent.Thereweremorethan400presentations spread over 39 Topics. The program began with a plenary session featuring theDrucker Medal recipient, John Rudnicki of Northwestern University, and the Ted BelytschkoAppliedMechanicsAwardrecipients,DavidGartlingofSandiaNationalLabsandKenChongoftheNational Science Foundation. Rudnicki’s presentationwas entitled “Formation and Extension ofLocalizedCompactioninPorousSandstones;”Gartling’swas“AFiniteElementMethodforAblationProblems;” and Chong’s was “Nuclear Energy: Safety, Production, Mechanics Research andChallenges.” Additional highlights of the Track included a symposium honoring the DruckerMedalistandtheKoiterLecture,deliveredbytheKoiterMedalist,JimSimmondsoftheUniversityofVirginia,entitled“TheSimpleLogicofClassicalNonlinearThermodynamicShellTheory.”WelookforwardtoanothersuccessfulIMECE,inNovember2012,undertheableguidanceof(now)Track9Chair,HuajianGao.

THE2011AMDANDASMESOCIETYAWARDS

TIMOSHENKOMEDAL AlanNeedleman

TheTimoshenkoMedalwasestablishedin1957and is conferred annually in recognition ofdistinguished contributions to the field ofapplied mechanics. Instituted by the AppliedMechanics Division, it honors Stephen P.Timoshenko, world renowned authority in thefield,anditcommemorateshiscontributionsasauthor and teacher. The 2010 TimoshenkoMedal was awarded to Professor AlanNeedlemanoftheUniversityofNorthTexas,

forseminalcontributionstotheunderstandingofinelasticdeformationandfailureofmaterials.The acceptance speech that followswaspresented at theAppliedMechanicsDinner of the 2011ASMEInternationalMechanicalEngineeringCongressinDenver,Colorado,onTuesday,November15,2011.

Thankyou,Aresforyourkindintroduction.IamgreatlyhonoredtohavemynameaddedtothelistofTimoshenkoMedalists.However,receivingtheTimoshenkoMedalhasadownside.I'lldescribethedownsidethroughastorytoldbyJean‐BaptisteLeblond.AtthecircusinImperialRomeaslavewasthrowntothelions.Thelionstalkedtheslaveandthenattacked.Asthelionjumpedonhimtheslavegrabbedthelion'smaneandwhisperedinitsear.Tothecrowd'samazementthelionslinkedoffintoafarcornerofthearenaandsatdown.TheEmperorcalledtheslaveoverandsaid“IfyoutellmewhatmagicyouworkedI'llgiveyouyourfreedom.”Theslavereplied“Itwasn'tmagic.Ijusttoldthelionifheatemehe'dhaveagoodmealbutthenhe'dhavetogiveanafterdinnerspeech.“Fortunatelyforme,manypreviousTimoshenkoafterdinnerspeechesareavailableoniMechanica.Iwill followseveralof thoseand talkaboutmy life inmechanics. Before I starton that, Iwant tomentionfourmechanicianswhohavehadanenormousinfluenceonmyprofessionallifeaswellashavinggreatlyenrichedmypersonallife:JohnHutchinson,ViggoTvergaard,JimRiceandErikvanderGiessen.Thereisnotenoughtimetodetailmydebttothem.My life inmechanics beganmy senior year at theUniversity of Pennsylvania. I took a course incontinuummechanics from Hsuan Yeh whowas Dean of the Towne School. The course was sointerestingthat IdecidedthatwaswhatIwantedtostudy ingraduateschool. IwenttograduateschoolatHarvardandwasveryluckythatayoungfacultymembernamedJohnHutchinsonagreedtobemy thesisadviser.MyPhD thesis involved the finite strain, finiteelementanalysisofa twodimensionalperiodicarrayofcircularholes(motivatedbythepioneeringductilefracturestudiesofFrank McClintock and Jim Rice). This initiated me into two emerging developments in solidmechanics: finiteelementmethodsandmaterialsmechanics.As JohnHutchinsonremarkedinhisTimoshenkoMedaladdress,wedidnotrealizewewereparticipatinginarevolution.At that time finite element methods were not well regarded by much of the solid mechanicscommunity.Toomanyyearspassedbeforecomputationalmechanicswasacceptedandintegratedintomainstreamsolidmechanics.IampleasedthatthesituationisverydifferentnowasevidencedbytheTimoshenkoMedalhavingbeenawardedtoOlegZienkiewicz,TinsleyOden,TedBelytschkoand Tom Hughes. Materials mechanics was more readily accepted and became a source ofwonderfully challengingproblems. It has stimulated thedevelopmentof newmechanics theoriesandexperimentalmethods,particularlythoseaimedatunderstandingsmallsizescalephenomena.Conversely, it has led to solid mechanics having a significant impact on materials science andengineering.

IfinishedmyPhDworkatHarvardinthesummerof1970andgotajobasanInstructorinAppliedMathematicsatMIT.Tostartmyresearchcareer,Idecidedtobuildonmyexpertiseandproposedanalyzingatwodimensionalarrayofellipticalholes.Youcanimaginemydisappointmentwhennooneshowedanyinterestinthisoranywillingnesstosupportit.SoIdroppeditanddecidedtoworkonsomethingthatexcitedmewhichwasanideaintheliteraturethattensilenecking,likebuckling,could be regarded as a bifurcation. I thought it would be fun to do the bifurcation analysis andcalculatethesubsequentneckdevelopmentusingfiniteelements.ThatworkedoutwellandIwasaskedtogiveaseminaronthisworkbyHarveyGreenspan,thentheheadofAppliedMath.Hegaveme some sage advice “No one every complained that a lecturewas too short.” I have tried, notalwayssuccessfully,tofollowhisadvice.Thetitleofmytalkwas“NeckinginBars.”Tothebestofmyknowledgeit istheonlyMITAppliedMathtalkeverlistedintheentertainmentsectionofthelocalpaper.MidwaythroughmystayatMITIhadaleaveofabsenceattheTechnicalUniversityofDenmarkandbeganmycollaborationwithViggoTvergaard. ViggoandIworkedonbucklingandwhenIcame

back from Denmark I got excited about a plastic buckling issue. My idea was that the so‐calledplasticbucklingparadoxcouldberesolvedbyconsidering threedimensionaleffects. ImentionedmyideatoJohnHutchinsonwhoknewIwasclearlywrongbutdidn'ttrytodampenmyenthusiasm.I am grateful for that. Eventually I realized I was wrong, learned how to differentiate betweenexcitementandinsight,andtoacceptbeingwrongandthenmoveon.DuringmytimeatMITIwasfreetopursuewhateverexcitedmeandwasabletodevelopmyownresearchstyle.AfterfiveyearsatMITIwastoldmyserviceswerenolongerneededandIwasextremelyfortunatetowindupatBrown.OneareaIworkedonwhenIstartedatBrownwasneckingproblemsrelatedto sheet metal forming. I gave a presentation on some of that work at a Canadian AppliedMechanicsConference.Idon'tremembermytalkbutIdorememberthat,atleastinonerespect,mypresentationwasthehitoftheconference.ThespeakerattheconferencedinnerwastheMinisterofEducationofBritishColumbia.Shebeganherspeechbysayingthatshehadbeenlookingthroughthe book of abstracts during dinner and the titles meant nothing to her until she came across“Necking in Thin Sheets.” That title she could relate to. But she had one question, “Why do thesheetshavetobethin?”Fortunately,Iwassittingtoofarinthebacktobeexpectedtoprovideananswer.Therewas a great deal of intellectual excitement in solidmechanics at Brown in the late 1970s.Much of it stemmed from JimRicewho hadmany original and deep ideas, andwas generous insharing them. One topic was the coupling of grain boundary diffusion and plastic creep inpolycrystallinemetals.Plasticdeformationcouldeffectivelyshortendiffusionlengthssotherecouldbeasynergisticeffect.Quantifyingthisrequirednumericalcalculations.That'swhereIcamein.Thefiniteelementformulationofthisprobleminvolvedcreatingastiffnessmatrixwithsurfacetermsaccountingforgrainboundarydiffusioninadditiontotheusualvolumetricterms.Thecalculationsquantifiedasignificantsynergisticeffect.Years latertheideaofafiniteelementformulationwithseparate constitutive descriptions for volumes and surfaceswas to play a prominent role inmyresearch.In the1960sand70scomputationswerecarriedoutatacentraluniversitycomputercenterandCPUtimewasascarceresource.Programswerewrittenonpunchcardsandsubmittedtocomputeroperatorsoveracounternotunlikethecounteratafastfoodrestaurant.However,theturnaroundtimewasmeasuredinhoursratherthanminutes.Whatcamebackwasastackofpaperthateithercontainederrormessagesoraprintoutofnumbersthathopefullycorrespondedtoameaningfulresult.Draftsmenwereemployedtoturnthenumbersintopictures.Computerterminalsreplacedcardstowardtheendofthisperiodbuttherestoftheprocesswasprettymuchthesame.Ahuge change cameat theendof the70swhen the solidmechanics groupatBrownacquiredadedicated computer for computationalmechanics, aDECVAX780. This acquisition providedmewith a lesson in humility. The DEC salesman mentioned that the standard VAX configurationincludedone67MBytedisk.HeaskedifIwantedtopurchaseaseconddisk.Ianswered“No,we'llneverfillup67MBytes.”TheVAX780consistedofseveralrefrigeratorsizecabinetsandcoulddodoubleprecisionfloatingpointoperationsatabout0.14MFlops.Toputthisinperspectiveitislessthan1/100thespeedofamodernsmartphone.Butwewerethrilledwith itsperformanceand itopenedupnewpossibilitiesforsimulation.Again largely stimulated by Jim Rice's interests, I became involved in research on plastic flowlocalization(aseminalpaperonthattopicwasco‐authoredbyJimandthisyears'DruckerMedalistJohn Rudnicki). The conditions for initiation were established but determining the evolutionrequiredcomputation. ViggowasvisitingBrownandourfirstprojectontheVAXwascalculating

shearbanddevelopmentusingtheJ2‐cornertheorythatJohnHutchinsonandJesChristoffersenhaddeveloped. I found it exciting to be able to simulate the evolution of such complex deformationpatterns. Iwas sopleasedwith the resultingpictures that I broughta reprinthomeandproudlyshowedittoour6and8yearoldchildrensaying“LookwhatIdid.”Oneofthem(Idon'trememberwhich)said“No,youdidn't.You'renotsmartenough.Mommyprobablydidit.”Anotherlessoninhumility.At about the timeViggo and Iweredoingour calculationsBobAsarowas investigating localizeddeformationinsinglecrystalsexperimentally.InworkwithBobandDanPeircewefoundthatrateindependentsinglecrystalcalculationscompletelybrokedownforacertainrangeofparametersofinterest. Eventually we found that accounting for material rate dependence could eliminate thepathological behavior.Ratedependent single crystal calculationswere able to simulate observeddeformationresponsesremarkablywell.An issue with the rate independent localization calculations with Viggo and Bob was that theformulation did not contain a material length scale. The band thickness and hence the post‐localizationresponsewereessentiallydeterminedbythefiniteelementdiscretizationratherthanby any mechanism embedded in the modeling. Material rate dependence in effect led to theintroduction of a length scale. Whether or not this is the governing length scale in a specificsituationisanothermatterbutwefoundthatratedependencecanregularizelocalizationproblems.Iliketothinkthatourcomputationsoflocalizeddeformationmodesplayedaroleinstimulatingatleast some of the subsequent work on incorporating a material length scale into continuumplasticitytheories.Meanwhile JimRice,BenFreundand their collaboratorswere carryingoutpioneering studies infracture mechanics. What got me excited was the possibility of using computation to directlysimulatefracture.ThisledtoaseriesofmicromechanicalfracturestudieswithViggo.Again,akeyissue is how to incorporate a length scale into the formulation. A main aim of the fracturesimulations that Viggo and I (andnowmany others) are engaged in is to relatemeasurable and(hopefully)controllablefeaturesofamaterial'smicrostructuretoitsfractureresistancetoprovideabasisfordesigningmorefractureresistantmaterialsystems.Ratherthanquantitativepredictionsthese simulations seek to provide trends, scaling relations and insight into the mechanismscontrollingtoughnessandductility.ThroughoutmytimeatBrowntherewasawonderfulspiritofcooperationandinteraction.Manyofthe projects Iworked on came from discussions in the hallways or over lunch or coffee. Just tomentiononeexample:myworkoncohesivemodelingstartedafteraninformaltalkSteveNuttgavewhere he showed some pictures of void nucleation at a fiber end in an Al‐SiC composite. ThecombinationofSteve'smicrographsandmyearlierworkwithJimRiceongrainboundarydiffusionledtotheideatoregardacontinuumasconsistingofbothsurfacesandvolumes,withaconstitutiverelationforeach.Hence,aninitialcrackwasnotneededtouseaBarenblatt/Dugdaletypecohesiverelation.Acohesiveframeworkintroducesalengthscaleandcanbeusedtocreatenewfreesurfacethusmodelingcrackinitiation.Thecomputercodefromthegrainboundarydiffusionworkhadtheinfrastructure to implement this. In subsequentwork,withAresRosakis and laterwith YehudaBen‐Zion, we analyzed rupture propagation along surfaces described by frictional constitutiverelationsusingbasicallythesamecomputationalinfrastructure.ThereweregroupgrantsatBrownthatmadeitpossibletoexplorenewareasofresearchwithoutworryingaboutfinancialsupport(ifyouwerenotanexperimentalist).BecauseofthisIwasabletodevelop my collaboration with Erik van der Giessen on discrete dislocation plasticity. Discrete

dislocationplasticityalsointroducesalengthscale(infactseverallengthscales).Sonowinsteadofno length scale, identifying the governing length scale in a problem can be an issue. One ofmyfavoriteprojects in thisareawasourworkwithVikramDeshpandeon fatiguecrackgrowth thatgaveafatiguethresholdandaParis lawasnaturaloutcomesofthesimulations.Anotherwasourworkwith LuciaNicola and JoostVlassak ofHarvardwhich involved a direct comparison of oursimulationsforstressevolutioninthinfilmswithJoost'sexperiments.Quitegenerally,IregardwhatIdoassolidmechanicssimulation:anidealizedmodeliscreatedthatis governed by the equations of mechanics which are then solved computationally. Suchsimulationscanbeapowerfultoolforgaininginsightintofeaturesthatarenotdirectlyaccessibleexperimentally. Comparison of predicted observables with experiment is a win‐win situation:agreement gives confidence in the predictions while disagreement can point the way to thedevelopment of improved theories and models. Another role for such simulations is to identifyregionsofparameterspacethatmeritexperimentalexploration.Ifinditgratifyingthatthisactuallyhappened in work with Ares and Demir Coker. What has typically been missing from solidmechanics simulations is a statistical perspective. I will venture a prediction that a statisticalperspectivewillbecomemoreprevalentinthefuture.OvermyyearsatBrownIbenefitedenormouslyfromcollaborationswithmanypeopleinadditionto those named already. There isn't time to name them all but I will mention a sampling:extraordinary colleagues includingFong Shih, Subra Suresh,MichaelOrtiz,K.S.Kim,BenFreund,RodCliftonandBillCurtin;wonderfulcollaboratorsfromaroundtheworldincludingYvesBréchet,MortGurtin,NormanFleck,XavierOliverandRenédeBorst;andanexcellentgroupofstudentsandpost‐doc visitors including Nick Triantafyllidis, Rich Becker, Xiaopeng Xu, Amine Benzerga andAlfredoHuespe.IretiredfromBrownafterbeingafacultymemberfor34yearstobeclosertograndchildren.Iwasvery fortunate to get a position in the University of North Texas (UNT) Materials Science andEngineeringDepartmentwhich is in anexciting stageofdevelopment. Quite a fewofmy recentcollaborators have been women researchers including Julia Greer, Elisabeth Bouchaud, CateBrinson and Linda Schadler. OurTCcontinuestoworkhardandbuildmomentumthroughorganizingsymposiaandsessionsatnationalandinternationalconferences.AtIMECE2011,ourTCorganizedatopicareainMechanicsofIntegratedStructuresandMaterialsinAdvancedTechnologies(Topic12‐34)withfivesessionsintheMechanicsofSolids,StructuresandFluidstrack.OursymposiumfeaturedthreekeynotetalksbyProf.ZhigangSuo(HarvardUniversity),Prof.HuajianGao(BrownUniversity)andProf.GaneshSubbarayan (PurdueUniversity).At the2011ASMEAppliedMechanicsandMaterialsConference(McMAT), our TC organized a symposium on low dimension carbon nanomaterials with fivesessions, featuring keynote presentations by Prof. Boris I. Yakobson (Rice University), Prof.YonggangHuang(NorthwesternUniversity),Prof.VivekShenoy(BrownUniversity)andProf.JuLi(UniversityofPennsylvania).Forupcomingconferences,ourTCcontinuesourtraditiontoorganizea seven‐session symposium on Mechanics of Integrated Structures and Materials in AdvancedTechnologies at IMECE 2012 (Topic 9‐35). The committee members who have participated thesessionorganizationare:NathanWicks,TengLi,RuiHuang, SulinZhang,NanshuLu, andXiaohuLiu.Topicsofinterestsinclude,butnotlimitedtothefollowingareas:Mechanicsandmaterialsinenergy systems, low‐dimensional carbon materials, flexible and stretchable electronics,microelectronics,electronicandphotonicpackaging,MEMS/NEMS,andbiologicalandbio‐inspiredmaterials and structures. Our symposium at IMECE2012will feature five keynote talks by Prof.RobertMcMeeking (UCSB), Prof. JianmingQu (NorthwesternUniversity), Prof. Boris I. Yakobson(RiceUniversity), Prof. JohnRogers (UIUC) andDr. XiaopengXu (Synopsys, Inc.). The committeechairTeng Li is also co‐organizing the Symposium inhonor of the recipient of thePragerMedal
