Spring 2014
New Section Volunteer ASME Northern Alberta Section is welcoming Juan Camilo
Perez as our latest section volunteer. Juan will help in
technical programming and planning of events.
Juan is a Petroleum Engineer with
nearly 20 years of experience with
multinational petroleum companies
in the areas of exploration, drilling,
and pipeline engineering and
operations. A graduate of America
University in Colombia, Juan is
currently working with Enbridge
Liquids Pipelines in the role of
Senior Manager of Special Projects
in Edmonton, Alberta.
ASME-NAS – CRN Partnership The Composite Research Network (CRN) has partnered
with our ASME Northern Alberta Section offering very
attractively priced networking and educational events in the
field of polymer materials and composites. CRN's aim is to
provide Canadian companies in this area of work with the
tools they need to respond to a changing and more globally
competitive marketplace. You can find out more about CRN
at http://crn.ubc.ca/. Together with the new CRN Alberta
node, workshop/networking/dinner events on “Multifunctional
and Filler-modified Polymer Composites” and “Bio-Derived
Composites” took place in January and February. A third
event on “3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing” was
recently held on March 28. Future joint events will be
announced as soon as details become available.
Send us your suggestions We would like to hear your ideas for Workshop and Technical
Dinner Meeting topics. If you have a topic you would like us
to consider, please send it to [email protected] with the
subject “Technical Programming”.

January Event – Presentation and Dinner
SINTRA Engineering
Mark Hughes (right) receiving a token of appreciation
from the Section Chair Pierre Mertiny (left).
During the January section presentation and dinner event,
Mark Hughes from SINTRA Engineering gave a fascinating
and entertaining presentation on forensic engineering. He led
the audience through the process of a forensic engineering
investigation, failure analysis, how a forensic engineer can
participate in the litigation process, and provided examples of
fires and failures in industrial settings.
Mark Hughes is the founder and President of SINTRA
Engineering, and has specialized in property loss and accident
reconstruction investigations for over 20 years. He is a
Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator with the National
Association of Fire Investigators, and is registered as a
professional engineer in six provinces and territories. Mark
serves as a director for the Fire Investigation Association of
Alberta, is a member of various provincial, national and
international associations related to fire investigation, and has
been accepted as an expert in over 20 court appearances
throughout Alberta and the Yukon Territory.
Founded by Mark Hughes in 1997, SINTRA Engineering
is a multi-disciplinary firm specializing in forensic
engineering. With over 20 employees, and three offices
throughout Western Canada, SINTRA is the largest firm of its
kind in Western Canada.
We would like to express our gratitude to Mark for
volunteering his time delivering this captivating presentation.
