35 [Haweis, Thomas; Editor]. A MISSIONARY VOYAGE TO THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC OCEAN, performed in the Years 1796, 1797, 1798, in the Ship Duff, commanded by Captain James Wilson. Compiled from Journals of the Officers and the Missionaries; and illustrated with Maps, Charts, and Views, drawn by Mr. William Wilson, and engraved by the most eminent Artists. With a Preliminary Discourse on the Geography and History of the South Sea Islands; and an Appendix, including Details never before published, of the Natural and Civil State of Otaheite; by a Committee appointed for the Purpose by the Directors of the Missionary Society. Published for the Benefit of the Society. London: Printed by S. Gosnell, for T. Chapman, No. 151, Fleet Street. 1799. Med. 4to, Best Issue of First Edition, pp. [xii], c, 420, [12](Subscribers’ Names); 7 maps & charts (5 folding), 6 plates, appendix (on Otaheitian government, society, inhabitants, deities, customs, natural history, etc,); half navy blue morocco, with moire cloth sides (small trifling mark on front cover; slight scuffing of spine); a fine, clean copy, entirely uncut, with the original paper title-label preserved on inside front board; scarce in such condition. London; Printed by S. Gosnell, for T. Chapman; 1799. ***Ferguson 301; Hill 2, 1894; . The first and preferred of two closely similar editions bearing the same date, this being of slightly larger format and printed on better quality paper. Another edition bearing the imprint “Printed for T. Chapman ... by T. Gillet” and with a completely different set of subscriber’s names, was issued almost simultaneously (see Ferguson 302). The purpose of employing two printers appears to have been to ensure the speedy production of sufficient copies to meet the demand. This important work is the account of the first English missionary enterprise in the South Seas. The hostility of the natives at Tahiti and Tonga caused many of the missionaries to seek refuge at Sydney. Some of them settled in Australia “and founded families important in Australian history”. William Wilson was Chief Mate on the voyage. Apart from its missionary interest the work contains much valuable information on Tahiti, Fiji and the Marquesas. The Duff Group in the Santa Cruz islands was newly discovered on this voyage. #2293 A$2450.00

39 King, Phillip Parker. NARRATIVE OF A SURVEY OF THE INTERTROPICAL AND WESTERN COASTS OF AUSTRALIA. Performed between the Years 1818 and 1822. By Captain Phillip P. King, R.N., F.R.S., F.L.S., and Member of the Royal Asiatic Society of London. With an Appendix, containing Various Subjects relating to Hydrography and Natural History. In two volumes, illustrated by plates, charts and wood-cuts. Vol. I [Vol. II]. London: John Murray, Albemarle-street. MDCCCXXVII. 2 vols., First Edition; Vol. I, pp. [ii](half-title, verso blank), [iv](title-page, verso colophon & dedication, verso blank), [v]-xl(last blank), 452; folding chart, 7 plates, 5 wood-cuts in text (including title-vignette), Errata slip (at page 1); Vol. II, pp. viii, 638(last blank); folding chart, 6 plates (1 folding), 3 wood-cuts in text (including title-vignette), Errata slip (at page 1), 13 appendices (10 on meteorology, & navigation & geography), also list and description of natural history objects collected, geology & native languages; entirely uncut in early twentieth-century hard-grained morocco, with papered sides & marbled endpapers; (some foxing to plates of second volume & to margins only of some text leaves of both volumes); a very good, attractive set; rare. London; John Murray; 1827. ***Ferguson 1130; Wantrup 84b; Abbey 573. Inserted before the half-title in Volume I is an unrelated 16-page publisher’s catalogue from Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, & Green, dated January 1827. This is the second issue of this work, as usually found, with the cancel title-pages. A very few copies were issued with the date 1826; these are of the greatest rarity. The work is of great importance: Phillip Parker King (the son of Governor Philip Gidley King) was born at Norfolk Island, and became one of Britain’s leading hydrographers. His work considerably furthered the geographical knowledge of the Australian coasts. His charts were very accurate and his extensions and additions to those of Flinders on the Northern and Western coasts of Australia were for many years in practical use by the Admiralty (well into the twentieth century). He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1824. #43380 A$4500.00

40 Backhouse, James. A NARRATIVE OF A VISIT TO THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, by James Backhouse. Illustrated by three maps, fifteen etchings, and several wood-cuts. London: Hamilton, Adams, and Co. Paternoster Row, York: John L. Linney, Low Ousegate. MDCCCXLIII. Demy 8vo, First Edition; pp. xviii, 560, cxliv(appendices); 3 folding maps by James Wyld (The World, Tasmania, & New South Wales), 15 etched plates (including folding plate of chain gang) & 7 wood-cut text illustrations; uncut in the original green blind-stamped cloth (very neatly rebacked, with original backstrip preserved; a little mild foxing to plates, as usual, but a very good generally clean and crisp copy of a book usually found in indifferent condition); scarce in such condition. London; Hamilton, Adams, and Co.; 1843. ***Ferguson 3558. This work is of major importance containing much detailed and valuable information on the state of the colonies at the time. Backhouse was a quaker missionary who arrived in Hobart with George Washington Walker in 1832, spent three years in Van Diemen’s Land, and later visited nearly all the scattered Australian settlements. During their travels he made natural history observations and collected a valuable herbarium which was sent to Kew Gardens. Backhouse’s medical knowledge also proved very valuable, and he gave much assistance to the sick and wounded in the colonies. In Van Diemen’s Land they were granted access by Governor Arthur to all the penal establishments and aboriginal settlements and was encouraged to make observations and suggest improvements. In New South Wales they were encouraged by Governor Bourke to make similar observations and visited and described the penal settlements of Norfolk Island, Moreton Bay and Port Macquarie and the Aboriginal station at Wellington Valley. In 1837 they also visited Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, all still then in their infancy, promoting temperance and protection of the Aborigines. The extensive appendices include remarks on Judicial Oaths, Indigenous Vegetable Productions of Tasmania, Chain Gangs, Penal Discipline; a letter from a convict; addresses to the prisoner and free populations of the colonies; letters to Governor Bourke on the Aborigines; details of Quaker meetings, etc. #67452 A$1100.00

Blackwood, R.N., in Torres Strait, New Guinea, and other Islands of the Eastern Archipelago, during the Years 1842-1846: Together with an Excursion into the Interior of the Eastern Part of Java. 2 vols., First Edition; Vol. I, pp. 4(inserted adv.), xiv, 424(last blank), [2]+8(all inserted adverts.); folding map, 10 plates & 15 text illustrations; Vol. II, pp. [iv](inserted adv.), [ii](inserted adv., verso blank), viii, 362, 8(inserted adv.); folding map, 9 plates & 3 text illustrations, 10 appendices (including 2 on linguistics); some occasional mild foxing to some plates, but generally clean, uncut in the original binding of blue cloth (spines faded & some very light rubbing); a fine set; scarce. London; T. & W. Boone; 1847. ***Ferguson 4549; Hill, p. 159; Wantrup 92a; Not in Abbey, though it clearly qualifies. The advertisements are similar in number and content to those noted by Wantrup for the first issue but with some minor variations as to placing, etc. Of the plates, 4 are lithographs of natural history subjects, 3 are wood engravings and the remaining 12 are fine aquatints by Harden S. Melville. This was an important voyage, undertaken to survey the north-eastern parts of Australia, Torres Strait and New Guinea. The Great Barrier Reef was surveyed in considerable detail and Jukes’s observations on its natural history and geology are of great importance and were strongly supportive of Darwin’s theory of coral reef formation. The Fly River in New Guinea was discovered on this expedition and there are important accounts of Timor, Dutch Java, Bali, Singapore & Malacca. The appendices include important papers on the languages of Torres Strait and the Oceanic peoples. #68043 A$4800.00

If you would like to receive future lists please indicate your interests by email (preferred) or by using the form below by post. Please note we no longer have fax facilities. If you would like to receive ALL lists (email only) please let us know also. If for any reason you do not wish to receive any more of these lists, also please let us know and we will cease and desist. We have experimented with a number of forms for emailing orders to us but many security systems now prevent such links from working correctly so we suggest simply emailing us at: [email protected] and copying and pasting the entries of the items you want from the list above.
