PROGRAM

Konstantin Shamray Piano Elizabeth Layton ViolinGuy Noble Conductor & Presenter

Guy Noble is a conductor, broadcaster, pianist, writer and producer who loves most genres of music and has played, conducted or talked about most of them. He regularly conducts the ASO, SSO, MSO, WASO, TSO and QSO and has worked with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia, the Hong Kong and Malaysian Philharmonic orchestras. He has been Musical Director and Musical Supervisor of many major musicals including Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, South Pacific, Man of La Mancha, Gypsy and the Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

He was the host of the Breakfast show on ABC Classic FM from 1999-2001 and is still a regular guest presenter on the network. He writes a regular column for Limelight Magazine and has worked with a wide variety of international and local artists including Harry Connick Jnr, Ben Folds, The Beach Boys, The Whitlams, The Pointer Sisters, Human Nature, Dianne Reeves, Glenn Frey, Randy Newman, Michael Bolton, Maggie Beer and Simon Bryant, and Clive James. Recent performances include Great Opera Hits for Opera Australia (Sydney Opera House), Opera in The Markets with David Hobson and The Proms at Yarralumla (Canberra Symphony).

He has recorded 12 CDs and ABC Classics has just released his new comedy sketch CD entitled The Guy Noble Radio Show. Guy also presents the classical audio programs on Qantas, Gulf Air, Air China and China Airlines.

Music makes us feel like swooning, but it also (conveniently) does the swooning for us – and far more gracefully. All those sighs and cries and sobs and moans can be downright awkward in real life. But in music, they’re beautiful…

Ennio Morricone The Mission: Gabriel’s OboeWhen Ennio Morricone first saw the footage of Jeremy Irons pretending to play an oboe, he could have despaired. Instead, inspired by the actor’s hesitant, fumbling movements, he crafted a most unlikely melody… listen to how it struggles to get going, how it repeats itself, then meanders forlornly upwards hoping for the best. Conventional music theory says it shouldn’t work. But it soars.

Albinoni arr. Giazotto Adagio in G MinorIt’s hard to imagine a more sorrowful piece than Albinoni’s Adagio (which is actually the work of Remo Giazotto, a 20th-century musicologist). Everything about this music feels weighed down with grief: the slow, solemn tread of the basses, the mellow hum of the organ, and the drawn-out sighing phrases of the violins, always falling, falling…

Rachmaninov Concerto for Piano No 2 in C Minor Op 18: 2nd Movt.Rachmaninov wrote his Second Piano Concerto upon recovering from several years of agonizing self-doubt and a terrible writer’s block. Here is a swoon of relief: the orchestra’s moody opening chords dissolve into quiet bliss when the piano begins to play. The rippling accompaniment cleverly hides the beat, allowing the melody to float in utter contentment.

Gershwin arr. SchoenfeldI Got Rhythm VariationsGershwin’s ‘I got rhythm’ is a celebration of syncopation. This little collection of variations sounds like the tune having a dance after a few drinks: relaxed, happy, and not afraid of being a bit silly. And swooning? Listen for the little violin sighs during the slow variation…

Barber Adagio for StringsOne of music’s most distinctive sighs is the cadence that opens Barber’s Adagio for Strings and permeates the whole work. The mood is mournful and desolate, but unlike Albinoni’s Adagio, this music is always ascending. It circles slowly upwards until it reaches an excruciating cry… answered, once more, by those sighing cadences.

Elgar Enigma Variations Op 36: Variation IX NimrodElgar’s ‘Nimrod’ was written as a tribute to a very dear friend. If you are going to swoon in public, this is the way to do it. The music has all the nobility and grandeur of a Beethoven slow movement, but is nevertheless filled with those romantic ‘sighing’ figures that by now are very familiar.

Shostakovich The Gadfly: Romance Op 97aWe return to film music, where music’s ‘swooning’ potential is highly valued. Shostakovich’s ‘Romance’ for The Gadfly is a violin melody that seems as unlikely to work as the Morricone’s oboe tune. It wanders all over the place, with so many notes! Yet somehow it hits the spot. Again.

Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker: Pas de deuxSo, have we discovered the secret to a good musical swoon? Descending melody, sighing phrasing, and some orchestral magic… why not just use a descending scale? That’s all Tchaikovsky needs for the pas de deux of The Nutcracker. Add the flutter of a harp, some pulsing bass notes… and, if it’s a real swoon you’re after, let the music crescendo to a climax powerful enough to knock you out!
