PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Everyone: Our chapter has made it to June and I look forward to a much needed rest! NOT, JUST KIDDING. It is that time of year when the year- end report and financial report must be
completed to allow the Society to re-view just what we have accomplished for the year. David Smith and I are just back from the Region 1 meeting. It was held in New York City Saturday June 3rd. Paulie Silvestre our director kept us very involved with the agenda. The NYC Chapter did a great job setting the meeting location at Time Square. I am sure most members do not know the hard work involved to put such a meeting together both for the host chap-ter and the Region Director. First item of business is each chapter is required to report on their accomplishments and what was done well and how others could be done better. It’s very rewarding to hear what our other chapters are do-ing and we can take this knowledge to enhance or improve what we are doing. When it was the Philly chapter time to speak David Smith started with our ac-complishments with meeting topics and the use of all the certificate programs we utilized that the Society has developed. We discovered that only 17 Chapters are
using the programs correctly. Thank you David. For those members requesting CEU’S and PDH credits be assured we are on top of this important requirement for your benefit. I spoke about our great education program in detail, our suc-cessful golf outing and of course our Product show. Everyone was interested in the fact that we have ASHRAE join-ing us for the Symposium part of the program. Paulie Silvestre invited David DeBord, VP Tech. Chris Graham VP Education and Stacey Kidd Director of meetings and members to address the Chapter at-tendees. In closing 14 Chapters were present to gain much knowledge in all aspects of the Society’s structure, such as policy and procedures, Board member require-ments to name just a few. We really did cover a lot of information in just 8 hours plus. I wish to acknowledge our entire Board for a great year with all you do I THANK YOU . I look forward to seeing many members at the Golf outing in September. Best regards Mike

TECHNICAL CORNER
This was the last presenta-tion of the 2016-2017 year. Donna Stoughton from CT Piping Solutions, Inc. gave a presentation of PP-R and PP-RCT Piping Systems. She defined PP-R as PolyPropyl-
ene-Random, which is the way the plastic is cross-
linked. PP-R material has temperature limita-tions. PP-RCT is defined as PolyPropylene-Random Crystalline Temperature, which has improved temperature and pressure char-acteristics and allows for thinner pipe walls.
All PP-R & PP-RCT pipes are metric sizes due to being develop overseas. Therefore, when specifying this product, use metric sizes as all
US manufacturers have variations when con-verting to imperial sizes. Sizes range are SDR 7.4, SDR 9, SDR 11, & SDR 17.6. The lower the SDR number equal a thicker pipe wall. Most plastic pipe have large thermal expansion factors. PP-R & PP-RCT have been able to reduce the expansion factor by making the pipe a composite of PP-R, Fiber composite, and PP-R.
PP-R and PP-RCT can be used for most appli-cations, i.e. chilled-water, heating hydronic water, domestic water (both hot, cold, and return), compressed air, gray water, and gases.
Disadvantages: PP-RCT is not plenum rated

Summer 2017
SPEAKING OUT Design software is always a hot topic of conversation depending on who you are speaking to. BIM has been on the scene for almost a decade now and it has not yet become the be-all end all-solution. The necessary use of BIM depends on several factors. First, your architect primarily will dictate if the project is modeled. For you A/E firms that’s pretty straight forward because the scale of project you work on and the fact that most architecture is now designed via BIM, you are already in the mix. Second, if your client asks for it. Some folks like to say the word BIM because they feel
it’s a sexy work to use when designing a project. Almost like mentioning your famous friends. An owner may request it, but not know what it means and create more of a logistic issue. Third, because you want to. Some firms just want to have the latest technology. Same as your phone. It can become a pain when you are constantly upgrading, so you would need to evaluate if its worth the time and possible hassle. Most large A/E firms that utilize BIM have a greater success with the program because it’s in their fabric of day to day work. A/E teams in separate offices that collaborate with BIM face a few more difficulties because the model is a living entity and similar to the 2D world, those pieces of data need to be shared. Models are signifi-cantly larger files (50MBH and up) and are not something easily sent via email. So, the question is, are we heading to an all BIM world? Of course, the software manufacturers and retailers would love to say YES! However, the great majority of smaller architecture and engineering firms are still very much successful with the reliable 2D method. We can go all day over the plusses and minuses of both drawing platforms, however the quality of the result (the drawings appearance) and the information we are putting out there falls on the engineer. So if you work in 2D or BIM does that make you a better or worse engineer? I don’t think it matters one way or the other. Your skill set as an engineer falls on fundamentals that are not included in the software. On both cases, we draw lines and circles but the value is where we put the lines and circles. If you don’t know that, does it really matter what format you are working in? I will say this, if you want to get HIRED as a design engineer at a firm, it may affect your marketability if you are an entry or mid-level engineer because you are being hired for your ability to produce. The senior engineers – those guys who have been there and did that - are not being scrutinized because they used to work with a tablet in CAD 10. It’s their broad understanding of engineering that’s being employed. Many employers will provide training for the specific software they use. The decision to upgrade is made be-cause the employer finds value in changing a method or the technology has moved past them and they need to keep up. In either case, updating design software comes at a great expense. If you are a 2D guy who wants to learn 3D you may can always pay for a course out of pocket and attend be-ginner, intermediate and discipline specific classes offered at retailers. The issue is like anything else, if you don’t use it, you lose it.

and will require a fire wrap. When using the product outside, a UV inhibitor is required. Advantages: Installation does not require hot work permits, dielectric unions, and flex-ible connections. The fusion seal joints pre-vent leaks.
To find out more about PP-R & PP-RCT pip-ing systems, contact Donna Stoughton at [email protected]. Over the summer, Philadelphia Chapter will making changes in our dinner meeting lo-cations. We are considering several loca-tions and will inform everyone when the lo-cations are booked. The different locations
are attract engineers from other parts of the Delaware Valley that think the Clarion is not a convenient location to their office or home. Another change is to add problem solving to the dinner meeting. If you have a problem at work and would like to ask the group for an answer, please bring the problem to the meeting. Everyone in at-tendance will be glad to give you help. No problem or condition is too small or too big.
Everyone have a good summer and see you in September!
