aspire Reflection and Pray Space During the period of Advent all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 had the opportunity to reflect and think of others in a dedicated area of calm. With parables, stories, videos and music to stimulate thought on different themes, students have been able to take a moment and collect their thoughts. In a time of increasing economic pressure we are eager to place an emphasis on spiritual and moral development. This builds social and emotional well-being and creates young people who will contribute to their community and develop individual resilience. Dedicated stations asked students to consider the following themes: thankfulness, mercy, forgiveness and peace. Seeing the responses of students to these themes was incredibly moving and reminded us all how important it is that we take time to be still in our fast- paced world. Our thanks to Matt Levett, from The Forge Church, for joining us for the week of reflection, working alongside our RE teaching team. A selection of the students’ thoughts and prayers will be made into a dedicated space in St Mary’s Church in Debenham. Head start As we reach the end of the first term of 2012-13 there is much to celebrate. Students, as usual, have shown great focus on their studies, with Year 11 especially working hard towards mock examinations and assessed work. At the start of December we were informed that the school would be having a Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools. This inspection assesses the distinctive and effective nature of our Christian ethos. We were delighted that this has been judged as Outstanding. The inspector recognised how our school aims and mission statement are underpinned by the Christian values of compassion, generosity and respect. With a strong emphasis on spritual, moral, social and cultural development alongside academic progress she noted that we are a school that “lives its Christian ethos”. We are of course delighted that an external verification has seen what we believe happens every day at Debenham High School. I hope that all our readers will enjoy a restful and joyful Christmas. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this time of year we will all be sharing a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves. Mountf itchet C ast leTaking the learning inside, outsideYear 7 students visited Mountfitchet Castle as part of their curriculum trips to bring learning alive. Mountfitchet Castle is a unique open-air museum where you can travel back in time over 900 years to witness life in a medieval motte and bailey castle. Students explored the castle and roamed through the Norman village hidden behind the castle walls, wandered in and out of the many houses, viewed the scenes, smelt the log fires burning and felt the ambience of a bygone lifestyle.
