Hey what’s up everyone!!!

I just want to let you know that whatever it is you’re doing while attending YVCC, know that you have the potential to excel in your ambitions. You like drawing? Are you a writer? If you feel like expressing yourself, why not do that through the YAK? I’m welcome to any ideas or form of expression that you have. Just talk to me and we’ll go from there.

Club Spotlight

Chess Club

There was a great turnout for the first unofficial Chess Club meeting of the quarter, with 16 people attending. The main focus of the meeting was to fill the club positions (Club President, Vice President, etc.) in order to make the club official. Richard Wilson, one of the founders, hopes to invite other colleges to participate in future tournaments held within the school. This would be beneficial in terms of giving members an opportunity to put their skills to the test. There is also talk abouthaving a ranking system within the club to have friendly competition. In addition to this, the club plans to teach individuals interested in learning how to play chess.

The club will meet every Friday at noon in the HUB Quiet Lounge area. Be on the lookout for chess boards around.

Highlights

MLK Awareness

ASYVCC wanted to do more than just a speech to celebrate the equality that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned. On January 15th, ASYVCC reenacted what it would be like before the Civil Rights Act when people of color were being segregated. Students on their way to the HUB were first met with door signs that said “Whites Only.” When students went inside, they got the chance to see seating arrangements in the cafeteria and seperated drinking fountains as well. This obviously wasn’t appealing to some individuals and were shocked to see these signs here at YVCC. Volunteers who were assisting in the event explained to people why it is important to remember that segregation happened and that we shouldn’t take for granted the things that MLK fought for and that was equality.

MLKMarch

The date is August 28, 1963. More than 200,000 people joined for the march in Washington D.C. This would be one of the most pivotal moments in the Civil Rights Movement as it led to the “I Have a Dream” speech given by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In today’s world, we remember and celebrate the dream of racial equality that King wanted for everyone to have. To celebrate, hundreds gathered in Yakima for the peaceful march from MLK Boulevard and 5th Avenue to the Yakima Convention Center which culminated in a program filled with music, guest speakers and an excerpt from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream.”

After the program, people were welcomed to participate in serving at the Soup Kitchen at the Southeast Community Center.
