Overview of ASRS
ASRS refers to a variety of computer-controlled methods for automatically depositing and retrieving loads from defined storage locations
ASRS are used widely in both manufacturing and distribution operations to hold and buffer the flow of material moving through the process to the ultimate end -user
Problems of conventional storage system
Much time spend for searching lost or damage products and inaccurate records.
Orders spending too much time in factory causing delivers to be late
Waste much space Excess inventory Workers are exposed dangers
=> Need ASRS
Why we choose ASRS
Orders spending too much time in the factory, causing
customer deliveries to the late Much time spend for searching Lost or damaged products and
inaccurate records Waste much space Workers are exposed to dangers
If the answer to all of these questions is “YES” for a given material handling system, then the system can be considered Automated Storage and Retrieval system(ASRS).
Basic Structure of ASRS
Storage ModulesUnit load containers is used to hold an inventory items such as pallets, steel wire baskets, containers etc.
The modules are generally made to a standard base size capable of being stored in the structure and moved by S/R MachinesPickup and Deposit (P/D) Stationsloads transferred to in and out of the AS/RS stations located at the end of aisles
Number of P/D Stations depends upon the origin point from incoming and outgoing loads
External handling system
bring load to AS/RS and takes load away Eq- Pallet truck etc .

Material Handling System
Material Handling is the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal.
Robots in Manufacturing
Industrial robot is a Programmable Multi-functional Designed to move materials, parts, tools or special devices Through programmed motions To perform many different tasks
A typical robot consists of many different part connected to each other Most robots resembles a human arm Its motions are controlled by a computer program Depends on the type of robot, movement capabilities of them are
measured by the term degrees of freedom
Robots in Manufacturing
First industrial robot was developed in the 1950s Further advancements enable to utilize robots in
Variety of types Style Size
Their functionalities may include but not restricted to WeldingDrilling Painting Military applications Assembly Explosive material removal Pick-and-place Material handling
Robot Applications
Need to replace human labor by robots:
Work environment hazardous for human beings Repetitive tasks Boring and unpleasant tasks Multishift operations Infrequent changeovers Performing at a steady pace Operating for long hours without rest Responding in automated operations Minimizing variation
Industrial Applications(contd.)
Industrial Robot Applications can be divided into: Material-handling applications:
Involve the movement of material or parts from one location to another. It include part placement, palletizing and/or depalletizing, machine loading and unloading.
Processing Operations: Requires the robot to manipulate a special process tool as the end effector. The application include spot welding, arc welding, riveting, spray painting, machining, metal
cutting, deburring, polishing. Assembly Applications:
Involve part-handling manipulations of a special tools and other automatic tasks and operations.
Inspection Operations: Require the robot to position a workpart to an inspection device. Involve the robot to manipulate a device or sensor to perform the inspection.
The robot must have following features to facilitate material handling:
The manipulator must be able to lift the parts safely. The robot must have the reach needed. The robot must have cylindrical coordinate type. The robot’s controller must have a large enough memory to store all
the programmed points so that the robot can move from one location to another.
The robot must have the speed necessary for meeting the transfer cycle of the operation

Conclusion
AS/RS is a great system which was developed to improve the storage systems used in industries to handle, store and retrieve materials with precisions, accuracy and speed under defined degree of automation.
Nowadays for rapid manufacturing system we can not think anything without robot ,It save our time increase the production rate .
