ASSESSING STUDENT LEARNING
A GUIDE TO DEVELOPING
A PROGRAM ASSESSMENT PLAN
PROVIDED BY THE OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
~ University of San Diego•
Background Information
• The University Assessment Committee (UAC) adopted a university-wide assessment management system (Nuventive – TRAC DAT) in 2014 to support all assessment initiatives at USD.
• Once an assessment plan is developed, it can be entered into the system.
• The system is designed to collect annual assessment data via an emailing feature.
• The system generates assessment plans and annual assessment reports containing results.
• The system allows assessment of student learning to be carried out effortlessly, allowing time to concentrate on enhancing student learning using evidence-based results.

SECTION IDEVELOPING AN ASSESSMENT PLAN
Student Learning Outcomes What intentional learning have you
planned for your students?
Student learning outcomes should:
• align with the goals of the program
• should flow from the website or catalog description of the program
• should be measurable
• should contain verbs that describe actions relating to the knowledge, skills, or values to be exhibited by students
Tools for Assessing Student LearningHow will you measure student learning?
Common assessment tools used to measure student learning:
• rubrics, surveys, evaluations,• observation check lists, • exams, capstone projects, • written reports, oral
presentations, etc.
Benchmark Levels for Student SuccessWhat level of success is sufficient for the group?
Benchmarks identify a portion of students expected to attain a minimum competency level of learning specific knowledge/skills/values
