Objective Test• Objective tests are usually those

which come with a definite set of answers to the questions posed on the exam.

• Recall or supply types such as simple fill-in the blanks, identification , labeling and enumeration wherein answer are supplied by the test taker.

• Re-arranging of items.

aimed at measuring how the students have met the standards of learning outcomes. -(Assessment of Student’s Learning 1 by Dr. Barbacena and Prof. Calayag)

are designed to measure student performance against a fixed set of predetermined criteria or learning standards. - (www.edglossary.org)

grades you on whether you learn the skill. - (Nathaneal Sanchez)

Examples: chapter tests, driving tests, citizenship tests.

Both terms criterion-referenced and norm-referenced tests were

originally coined by Robert Glaser

Students answers Criterion-referenced

Norm-referenced

Student #1:WWII was caused by Hitler and Germany invading Poland.

This answer is correct.

This answer is worse than Student #2's answer, but better than Student #3's answer.

Student #2:WWII was caused by the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

This answer is wrong.

This answer is worse than Student #1's and Student #2's answers.

ADVANTAGES

The tests are better suited to measuring learning progress.

The tests are fairer to students because they don’t compare the relative performance of students.

The tests apply the same learning standards to all students.

The tests can be constructed with open-ended questions and tasks that require students to use higher-level cognitive skills.

Norm-referenced tests are relatively inexpensive to develop, simple to administer, and easy to score. The quality of norm-referenced tests is usually high because they are developed by testing experts.can help differentiate students and identify those who may have specific educational needs or deficits that require specialized assistance. The tests are an objective evaluation method that can decrease bias or favoritism when making educational decisions

Page 8: Assessment of Learning report

• scores are often misused in schools when making critical educational decisions.•encourage teachers to view students in terms of a bell curve, which can lead them to lower academic expectations for certain groups of students.•Multiple-choice tests—the dominant norm-referenced format—are better suited to measuring remembered facts than more complex forms of thinking

•The tests are only as accurate or fair as the learning standards upon which they are based. •The process of determining proficiency levels and passing scores on criterion-referenced tests can be highly subjective or misleading.•The subjective nature of proficiency levels allows the tests to be exploited for political purposes to make it appear that schools are either doing better or worse than they actually are

CRITICS

Identifying Test Objectives

Knowledge - recalling facts, terminologies, principles or t theories.

Comprehension – focused on understanding

Application - requires students to transfer or use concepts and principles to a new field or situation. Analysis - involve the task of breaking down the whole of a concept of idea to parts that constitute it. Synthesis – requires students to put together various components to make a new whole.

Table of Specifications (TOS)

o Blue print for test ensure proper emphasis given to all

elements of course of study.

content validity.

Page 11: Assessment of Learning report

Steps in Preparing a Table of Specification

1. Obtain the course contents and make an outline of the subject matter taught within a definite period of time.

2. List down the objectives.3. Decide on the total number of test items.4. Determine the number of class sessions spent for

each subject matter.5. Determine the total number of class sessions for the

covered unit, chapter, or period of test.6. Determine the number of test items for each subject

matter.

No. of items = No. of class sessions ____________________ x total no. of items

Desired Total No. of Class sessions

Two types of Table of Specification

One- way Table of Specification – Usually only contents, number of class sessions, number of items, and the item distribution are included.

Two-way Table of Specification – In this type, the level of items in the taxonomy under the cognitive domain is depicted as well as the course.
