WhatisAssessment?

§ Each student has different skills and abilities in English and math.

§ Assessment is the process that the college uses to determine which English or English as a Second Language (ESL) and math courses are right for you.

§ There is no “passing” or “failing” assessments—they are designed to measure your current knowledge and understanding of the academic subject.

§ After assessing your skills and abilities, you will be given course placements.

§ Once you have received your course placements, you can register for those courses!

DemonstrationofEnglishProficiency

§ Students must demonstrate English proficiency adequate for transfer-level, or university-level, English.

§ Students for whom English is not their first language can demonstrate English proficiency by:

§ Providing their U.S. high school transcript information for assessment

§ Students must have completed at least 9 – 11th grade in a U.S. high school

§ Completing the ESL assessment

§ You should take the ESL assessment if you are interested in learning English – or if you have not completed at least six years of education (including high school) in schools where all classes were taught in English.

§ English courses focus on university level reading and writing with an emphasis on analysis and literature.

§ English courses do not include grammar, writing, and reading instruction for English Language Learners.

§ ESL courses focus on the development of language skills.

§ ESL courses include grammar, writing, and reading instruction for English Language Learners.

§ The ESL program also includes listening, speaking, and pronunciation classes for English Language Learners.

ESLAssessmentDetails

§ The ESL assessment process includes:

§ The computerized ESL placement test (75 questions, multiple choice); and

§ An ESL writing sample (hand written, 30-minutes timed).

§ ESL course placements can take up to 2 to 3 weeks to process.

§ After you have completed the ESL assessment once, you may repeat it one additional time, only if:

§ You complete the second assessment within six monthsof your first assessment; and

§ You have not earned a non-passing grade in an ESL class.

§ After completing Advanced ESL Level courses, students can choose to take the English assessment for placement into the English course sequence or continue with the ESL course sequence.

§ Students interested in transferring to a CSU may take ESL 5: Advanced Composition & Reading

§ Students interested in transferring to a UC or private college may need to complete EWRT 1A: Composition & Reading

EnglishAssessmentOverview

§ The English assessment is the guided self-placement (GSP) survey that was created by De Anza's English instructors to help you determine which English course is right for you.

§ This assessment is for students who speak English as their primary language or who have completed at least six years of education, including high school, in schools where all classes were taught in English.

§ If you take the English GSP and are identified as an English Learner, you will be asked to complete the ESL assessment.

§ The English GSP is a computerized, survey-like tool that will guide you through several modules. These are designed to help you:

§ Determine your confidence level when asked to review course descriptions

§ Think about your comfort level when asked to review sample assignments

§ Reflect on your familiarity with major course concepts

§ On average it takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

§ You only need to take it once.

§ After you complete the assessment, you will receive a placement for a transfer-level course in the English (EWRT) course sequence.

§ The Math assessment is the guided self-placement (GSP) survey that was created by De Anza's Math instructors to help you determine which Math course is the right starting place for you.

§ The results will help you get the right level of instruction to succeed in the classes you need for your major and academic goals.

§ Upon completion of your assessment, you will be placed into multiple transfer-level Math courses in De Anza's Math course sequence.

§ MATH 1A: Calculus is the highest you can place with the Math assessment.

The math course(s) you need to complete will depend on your major and your educational goal.Talk with your counselor!

§ Review the online study guide & preparation infobefore attending your appointment.

§ On the day of your appointment:

§ Bring a valid photo ID, such as a driver's license or school ID, to show when you arrive.

§ Bring a few pencils.

§ We'll provide scratch paper.

§ No calculators, notes, dictionaries, or any other aids are allowed in the Assessment Center’s Computer Lab.

Aftercompletingyourassessments…

§ You can register for courses once you see your course placements on MyPortal.

§ Log in to MyPortal > Apps > Student Registration. Look under "My Records" and select "View My Placement Results."

§ The Assessment Center offers science proficiency exams for

§ CHEMISTRY 1A & BIOLOGY 6A

§ BIOLOGY 40A

§ Proficiency exams allow you to skip intoductoryChemistry and Biology courses.

§ After discussing your major with your counselor, if you would like to take a science exam, you can make an appointment online.
