    CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is becoming an increasinglyimportant activity to businesses nationally and internationally. Asglobalization accelerates and large corporations serve as globalproviders, these corporations have progressively recognized thebenefits of providing CSR programs in their various locations.

CSR activities are now being undertaken throughout the globe.

    What is corporate social responsibility?

The term is often used interchangeably for other terms such asCorporate Citizenship and is also linked to the concept of TripleBottom Line Reporting (TBL), which is used as a framework for

measuring an organisations performance against economic, social and environmental parameters.

The rationale for CSR has been articulated in a number of ways. Inessence it is about building sustainable businesses, which needhealthy economies, markets and communities.

The key drivers for CSR are:1. Enlightened self-interest

Creating a synergy of ethics, a cohesive society and a

sustainable global economy where markets, labour andcommunities are able to function well together.

    2. Social investment Contributing to physical infrastructure and social capital isincreasingly seen as a necessary part of doing business.

    3. Transparency and trust

  • 8/7/2019 Assignment No GCSR

    3/21

Business has low ratings of trust in public perception. There is increasing expectation that companies will bemore open, more accountable and be prepared to reportpublicly on their performance in social and environmental

arenas4. Increased public expectations of business Globally companies are expected to do more than merelyprovide jobs and contribute to the economy through taxesand employment.

    Q. why company needs to address the same?

Companies need to answer to two aspects of their operations; thequality of their management and quantity of their impacton society in the various areas. It is not necessary that all thebetter performing companies are equally contributing to thesociety. A company which professionally managed, causing noharm to the environment and contributing something to thesociety in which it operates, can be regarded as a better

    company.

Each and every company has to interact with lot of internal andexternal components as illustrated in the figure given below. Allthese components can influence the functions of a company.

  • 8/7/2019 Assignment No GCSR

    4/21

Since the company is operating in a society, it cannot stay awayfrom the social issues. The society provides both customers andresources to fulfill the business objectives of the corporatecompanies. An important aspect of CSR is how enterprisesinteract with their internal and external stakeholders; employees, customers, neighbors, nongovernmental organizations, publicauthorities, etc). Any problems occurred in the society can affectthe organization as well and hence the wellbeing of the society isthe responsibility of the organization also. Since the companiesare utilizing immense resources of the society, they should takethe responsibility of serving them as well. Giving employments tothe public alone need not be the responsibility the organizationsshould undertake. They have much wider aspects to cover as faras the strength of the society is concerned. Moreover, the societyhas already accepted the tension between corporate rationalityand social responsibility as an inescapable condition of livingprosperously and the companies should respect that.

CSR is visualized differently by different countries. In the UnitedStates, CSR has been defined in terms of a philanthropic model inwhich the companies make profits, unhindered except by fulfillingtheir duty to pay taxes and donate a certain share of the profits tocharitable causes. In European model, CSR focused on operating

the core business in a socially responsible way, complemented byinvestment in communities for solid business case reasons.

The importance of serving the society where the companies

are operating is a legal and moral responsibility for both thepublic and private companies. Big companies are alwaysexploiting the resources of a place and they shouldcompensate for that. Companies should understand that, itcan stay in the market with the help of the customers andthe society in which it operates alone. Neither financialabilities nor the smart governance or management will helpthe companies in achieving their long term goals. In order toachieve long term goals, the companies need to executetheir social responsibilities in a fruitful manner.

    Assignment No# 2

Q2. Why sustainable development has become order ofthe day? How companies are addressing the issue.

Corporate sustainabilityis a business approach that creates long-termconsumer and employee value by not only creating a "green" strategyaimed towards the natural environment, but taking into considerationevery dimension of how a business operates in the social, cultural, and economic environment. Also formulating strategies to build acompany that fosters longevity through transparency and proper

    employee development.

Strategic Principles For Corporate Sustainable Development :-

  • 8/7/2019 Assignment No GCSR

    6/21

    Transparency

Deals with the idea that by having an engaging and open environment within the

company as well as the community will improve performance and increase profits. It is

an open culture that promotes employee involvement in regards to the innovation and

creative processes. Reaching out to the community creates a much bigger team, is

extremely cheap, and provides evaluation from all angles. Companies are looking

inward and realizing changes must be made to fulfill environment needs such as energy

efficiency, limiting product waste and toxicity, and designing innovative products.

    Employee Development

People are the most important renewable resource and therefore, are the strongest

asset to any organization. A strong development program could be the underlying factor

for a company's success or failure. Employees are the concrete foundation for the

company and must be thoroughly analyzed and evaluated to tap into their true

motivations and desires. For a company that wants to reach its greatest potential,

employees must work towards improvement rather than perfection. Programs should be

implemented that rewards star performers, fosters the creative learning process, and

    provides comprehensive training and evaluating.

    Resource Efficiency

Companies must adapt to this rapidly changing environment by

being prepared to change and implement new creative ideas

related to sustainability. Companies should not throw away oldproducts and materials, but rather be prepared with upgraded

technology that can transform the product. New solutions that

improve recycling and waste redirecting can ultimately reduce

costs and increase profits. For example, WAL-MART Store Inc. has

redirected more than 64 percent of the waste generated by stores

and Sams Club facilities. In 2009 alone, they recycled more than

1.3 million pounds of aluminum, 120 million pounds of plastics,

11.6 million pounds of mixed paper and 4.6 billion pounds of

cardboard. On an annual basis, they expect to save around $20

million and prevent 38 million pounds of waste being sent to

    landfills.

Companies focused on sustainability are appointing a Chief

Sustainability Officer leading a department with a mandate to
