Ways of the World
Happened from 1775-1787Occurred out of a result of the British trying to tighten there control on the colonies.
The resulting U.S. Constitution and bill of rights set an example for many revolutions to come.

Haiti was originally a very wealthy French Caribbean colony called Saint Domingue.
It produced as much as half of the world’s coffee and 40% of the world’s sugar.
The mixture of many slaves and fewer white people controlling led to a massive rebellion and eventually the independence of Haiti.

European and American woman began redefining there roles and rights in society.
The Declaration of the Rights of Woman was written by a French woman in 1791 and made the issue known.
Most of early feminism was about suffrage.

The middle class was benefited most in the British Industrial Revolution.
Respectability was the central value in the new formed middle class culture.
There was a important distinguishing from the middle class and the laboring class.

American industrialization started in the textile industry in the 1820’s.
By 1914 the U.S. was the leading industrial power.
America’s industrial revelation was different then other parts of the world because it did not result in socialism or working class political parties.

As a result of industrialization in Russia there was a growing middle class.
These newly educated individuals slowly started looking at different political ideals, such as Marxist socialism.
Sparked by World War I, the Russian Revolution took place in 1917.

China suffered economic hardship in the 1800’s because of the robust population in early years.
The Taiping Uprising which followed was different then many other countries, because it was under the claim of Christianity and led by a man claiming to be Jesus’ brother.
The Taiping Uprising was eventually stopped, but weakened China.

The Ottoman Empire was at one time the power that kept Islam dominant in India, Indonesia, West Aftrica , and Central Asia.
In the late 1700’s the Ottoman Empire was weak and being overpowered by Christian influence.
Eventually the Ottoman Empire collapsed after World War I.

Japan limited its contact to the west significantly.
The Meiji Restoration was a time when Japan restored power to its young emperor.
Japan then opened up to the western world and ideals.

This French colony was eight times the size of France.
Its population was around 15 million.The rule depended mainly on Asian and African societies.

African woman were farmers taking on many responsibilities of planting and weeding and such.
As the economies of colonies grew, women’s roles grew more separate than those of men’s.
Woman had many hardships and struggles to deal with and suffered a lot of injustice.

Missionaries and government brought schools to the colonies which helped bring about a new identity.
This education also caused some cultural prejudice and division.
It was hard for many Africans and Asians to receive an education because they were considered lesser peoples.

Brought an end to World War I in 1919.Germany lost 15% of its European land and all of its colonies.
The Germans were blamed for starting the war.
The punishment to
Germany was severe.

In 1929 the Great Depression started when the stock market crashed.
The Depression started in America and spread its effects to the rest of the world.

Deal, which was meant
to jumpstart the economy.

He exercised the European fascism much like that of Italy.
When in control, Hitler
completely controlled the
country, everything from
police, to media, to
unions and much more.

He was the Bolshevik leader of the Russian Revolution.
He is now the world symbol of communism.
He distributed lots of
propaganda and ran
his country a lot like
a cult.

Communism took over China in 1949 when a small political party known as the Chinese Communist Party arose.
The leader of the group was Mao Zedong.When Japan invaded China, the CCP finally took
control of China.

The leader of Cuba starting in 1959.He caused a good amount of conflict and trouble with the U.S.
He allied with the Soviet Union.He played a part in the nuclear standoff in the Cold
War between the U.S.
and the U.S.S.R.

Mandela was a political prison for many years.
He was the leader of the African National Congress and the first black president.
He fought against
the control of the
whites and for
democracy in South
Africa .

Chp. 23-Kwame NkrumahNkrumah is considered the first hero of
Africa.He was the leader of the government of
Ghana.He unified Ghana and eventually won their
independence.He is known for his strong
support of Pan-Africanism.

The culture of Turkey started to adapt to the modern world.
The Turkish people still practiced Islam, but it became less strict and accepted more modern ideals, especially in dress.
The people, however,
still remained
attached to their
Islamic beliefs.

Globalization is the growth of international interaction in regards to economic issues.
Technology was a major factor in globalization.
It is captured well
in Jeffrey Frieden’s
quote, “capitalism was
global and the globe
was capitalist.”

From Saudi Arabia and created al-Qaeda in order to send troops and funds for the Afghan resistance.
He was originally an ally with the U.S.He then became angered that U.S. troops were stationed in the holy
city, so he planned the
infamous attack on the World
Trade Center.

People began to lash out against the pollution of the world from the growing industry
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring revealed the chemical contamination happening and lead to a whole
western wave of
“going green”.
