Aretérefers to the ancient Greek ideal of a balanced striving for excellence inall areas of life. The purpose of the program, which has been detailed inThe New York Times and The Times of Trenton, is to help student-athletes de-velop in all areas of their lives, not just on the playing fields or in theclassroom. Subjects of the seminars include time management, stressmanagement, sports nutrition, substance abuse, communication skills, study skills, training techniques, HIV, etiquette/good manners, inter-view techniques, resume writing, and life after Rider.

Student Transitional Education Program (STEP)

During the 1993-94 academic year, the Rider Department of Athleticsdeveloped STEP for varsity athletics. HEAD COACH RUSS FAGER

Russ Fager, the former Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, returns to Rider University for his 36th seasonthis fall. The winning coach in three conference championship games in the last 18 seasons (Northeast Conferencein 1992, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1997 and 1998), Fager is the all-time winningest soccer coach at Riderwith 247 victories against the highest level of competition in the Northeast.

In 2004 Fager led his Broncs to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship game, after reaching theMAAC semi-finals in 2003. Rider has made the playoffs seven times during its 13 years in the MAAC.

In 2000, without a senior on the roster, Fager and his Broncs came within one win of a regular season title, losing the regular season finale to Loyola in the battle for the top seed of the post-season tournament and finishing7-2 in conference play.

In 1997, Fager, the New Jersey Division I Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, led Rider to thenational top-20 with a ranking of 15th in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America/UmbroDivision I Rankings.

Fager helped ease Rider's transition from the Northeast Conference to the MAAC by winning the regular seasonand the championship tournament in his first season in the conference (1997). Fager performed the same feat in 1992, winning the NortheastConference title in Rider's first season in the NEC.

In the NEC, Fager’s Broncs reached the conference semi-finals in 1994 and 1996. In the ECC, six of Fager’s teams reached the title game, andhe was named the ECC Coach of the Year in 1987. His 1975 and 1979 squads won ECC West titles, each year totaling 10 wins, and his 1991team collected its tenth win of the season in the ECC semi-final win over host-UMBC. In all, 17 of his 26 teams have reached post-season play, either in the ECC, the ECAC, the NEC or the MAAC.

Since 1933, 12 Rider soccer teams have won 10 or more games in a season, and 10 of those dozen teams were coached by Fager, who in 1993served on the Meadowlands World Cup Organizing Committee. In 1992 Fager’s squad set a new Rider standard for wins in a season with a14-5-1 record, and bettered that mark in 1997 with the 15th victory coming in the NCAA Play-In over Atlantic-10 champion Dayton. NoBronc team had ever won more than 11 games before Fager's 1977 squad compiled a 12-5-1 record and his 1987 squad was 12-7-1.

In February of 2000, Fager ran the first-ever Licensing School in Ghana, a six-day coaching clinic for 34 coaches from Ghana, including thewomen's national team assistant, the Under-17 boys national team coach, the Under-23 national team assistant coach, and nine professional coachesfrom the Premier League.

The former Slippery Rock State College standout (class of ‘71) came to Rider after a three-year collegiate career as an all-star mid-fielder. Inhis junior and senior years, he was a first team selection to the Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Athletic Association all-star team.

Before taking the head coaching position at Rider, Fager served as an assistant coach from 1971-74 under Bob Pivovarnick.

Julian Richens, a 1998 graduate of Brunel University in England, returns for his fifth season on the men’ssoccer coaching staff.

In the summer of 2010, Richens coached the women’s Princeton soccer club to victory in the USL Super-20National Championship in Chicago.

“Julian brings to the team a wealth of soccer talent both as a player and as a coach,” said Rider head coach RussFager. “His personality is a tremendous asset to the athletes and his knowledge of the game helps our team growquickly to enable us to compete at new levels.”

“He has a way about himself on the field that is very professional and confident andthat rubs off on the players,” said Fager. “We are lucky to have a fine young talent onthe coaching staff.”

Richens earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science in 1998 from Brunel. He is licensed by the USSF, NSCAA and UEFA.

Julian Richens

Dan Riverso, a 2007 graduate of Rider, returns to his alma mater as an assistant coach to work with the goalkeepers, his fourth year with the men’s team.

OUTLOOK

With the return of 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, the 2010 Broncs will still be a young team (three seniors)but will be much more experienced in their quest of a

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title.“Like last year we only have a few seniors but we are much more ex-

perienced this year,” said Russ Fager, who enters his 36th season asthe Rider head coach. “This time last year we didn’t know who wouldbe playing six of the 11 positions. This year we know more of what wehave.”

What the Broncs have is a pair of goalkeepers who played almost 1400of the 1539 minutes last season and 10 of last year’s top 11 scorers.

“We are relatively strong in goal,” Fager said of returnees Matt Per-rella, Chris Pimentel and Jason Giordano. “Goalkeeping is the leastof my worries going into the season.”

Perrella started nine games last year as a freshman, winning four, and owned a 1.98 goals against average. “Perrella proved last year heis a competent goalie,” Fager said. “He has the potential to become anall-conference player. He comes up with big saves and can be a big-time player.”

Pimentel played in eight games, starting six. “Pimentel has a lot ofgame experience and works hard every training session,” Fager said.

Giordano didn’t see much action as a rookie, but saw considerablymore playing time in the spring workouts. “Giordano did a great jobin the spring once he got some game time,” Fager said.

The returnees are led by All-MAAC defender Andrew Cotes. “Wehave a relatively young backfield but we’re going to be okay backthere,” Fager said. “Cotes will be at the right back, where he was anall-conference performer last season.”

Other returnees in the backfield include juniors Sal Lubrano, CoreyDiamond and Alex Titus and sophomore Brandon Sebastian.

Lubrano started 14 games last year and was fifth on the team inscoring. Diamond played in 16 games, starting eight, while Titusplayed in 14 games, starting 10. Sebastian played in 11 games as arookie, starting six.

“Lubrano should be playing left back, where he is very comfort-able,” Fager said. “We look to have Diamond playing in the middlealong with Titus or Sebastian.”

In the midfield, the Broncs return team captain Jim Bradley, juniorsJonathan Burd and Matt Welna, sophomores Brenden Noesges, RyanFitzgerald and Sebastian.

Bradley has started 47 straight games. “Bradley is a senior captainthis year and will provide the team with strong leadership as well as atremendous work ethic,” Fager said.

Burd missed most of last season with a knee injury after starting thefinal 12 games of 2008 and the first two of 2009. “Having Burd backwill help a lot,” Fager said. “He will solidify one of our midfield spotsand is a strong defensive presence.”

Welna played in 18 games as a rookie, starting 13, but saw actionin just six games last year due to injuries. “Welna will add to ourstrength in the midfield as well this year,” Fager said. “Matt has acalming presence on the field and makes good decisions with the ball.”

Noesges started 10 games last year as a rookie and Rider was 6-4in those games. “Brenden will be in the midfield and may play a bitof forward this year,” Fager said. “He has the technical ability and men-tal toughness to become an all-conference player before he is done.”

Fitzgerald started 15 games last year as a rookie and like Noesges, will be an attacking midfielder or a forward this season. “Ryan gainedvaluable experience as a freshman and with his attacking attitude onthe field, we expect him to contribute to our attack a lot.”

The squad also has more depth this season.“We have quite a bit of depth,” Fager said. “We have nine or 10

backs who can play and with the talented midfielders and forwardscoming back we have some options.”

The newcomers are led by junior transfer Sam Bryant, freshmanEric Elgin and England imports William Knight and Joshua Wright.

“Bryant gives us size (6’2”, 180) and speed in the midfield,” Fagersaid. “Sam can play in the center of the back, left back or even a de-fensive midfielder. As a transfer he already understands what it takesto be successful in training and in games.”

Elgin was named to the U-16 Super Y League Nationals All-Tour-nament team and the 2010 Super Y League ODP Pool. He played onthe Central PA Alliance Team that won the National Cup. Elgin wasalso a member of the Cumberland Valley varsity track & field team, setting the school record in the triple jump while placing tenth in theDistrict III AAA Championships in the hurdles.

“Elgin is very athletic, running track and playing soccer,” Fagersaid. “He is a vocal leader on the field and has the technical ability tocontribute early on the back line. He will be a tremendous help in fill-ing a center back spot.”

The front line will also include sophomores Sam Kotowski, ChrisKozak and Dan Friga.

Kotowski played in 17 games as a Rider rookie, starting six (Riderwas 3-3 in the games he started) and of his 17 shots last year, 14 wereon goal, by far the best percentage on the team. “Sam learned a lot lastyear and he knows he must find the net regularly for us to win games,”Fager said.

Kozak played in all 17 games last season, starting 11. “Chris is verystrong on the ball and can play several positions,” Fager said. “Hispassing and vision make him dangerous whenever he has the ball.”

Friga played in all 17 games as a rookie, starting 15 (Rider was0-2 in the two games he did not start) and scored twice in Rider’s first-ever win over Army. “Dan is a big, strong presence on the field and heuses his body well to hold the ball and wait for others to join in theattack,” Fager said. “With a year of experience under his belt he shouldhave a break-out season and score more goals than last year.”

The Broncs plan to not let any of their competitors out-work themthis year.

“I feel the strength of our team will be the work ethic,” Fager said.“We have a handful of players who have the potential to be qualityplayers, all-conference players. With their talent and the hard work ofthe others, we have players who other teams are going to have to con-centrate on.”

The schedule begins September 1 with the first game on the newturf field, as the Broncs look to avenge the season opening 1-0 loss toLafayette last year. “The schedule is a good challenge,” Fager said.“Lafayette comes from the Patriot League, which is a solid soccer con-ference.”

Three more home games in September include Mount St. Mary’s,St. Francis-NY and NJIT, along with road trips to Philadelphia toplay Temple and then to West Point.

“The trip to Army will be a good game as well; with a new coachthey will do everything they can to turn things around from last yearwhen we got the better of them at home (3-2 win over the Cadets),”Fager said.

Conference games take place in October, with the first night gameOctober 8 against MAAC rival Saint Peter's and also night gamesagainst Loyola and Marist.

“We are looking forward to playing several night games againstMAAC opponents at home and think the new facility will give us adistinct advantage,” Fager said, “and hopefully a new atmosphere withcommunity and students having the ability to make the games.”

One of the goals of this year’s team is to attract more fans to the

night games. “We have set a goal to be a team that is a lot more funto watch,” Fager said. “We’ll take more chances, get more shots off.Take more risks. We should be able to do that this year with16-18players to draw from instead of 11 or 12 like last year. This season weare trying to turn a lot of those easy chances we missed last year intogoals. With a year of experience from all the younger players and theaddition of several new faces, we look to improve on all of our chancesthis year and capitalize more on set pieces.”

As always, the main goal of the team is to make the four-teamMAAC Tournament, held this year at Loyola. “Loyola is always in themix (for the MAAC title),” Fager said. “Fairfield, Niagara, Siena hadtalent last year, Marist was strong. Iona had a lot of seniors last year.It should be a five, six-team race and we’re hoping to be in that race. We’re entering the season very upbeat, knowing where most of ourplayers will be playing.”
