Staff Professional Development
Tomorrow, Friday 21st August, we have a Pupil Free Curriculum Day
where the staff will be introduced to a new writing program which will
support the development of each child’s creative writing. We have 40
staff from KPS and surrounding schools attending and it promises to be
an interesting and informative introduction to the writing program.
Year 6 Young Ambassadors’ Program
On Tuesday and Wednesday we have had 10 of our Year 6 leaders
involved in the annual Young Ambassadors Program. This program
which took place at Coal Creek saw the students work in groups to
research an aspect of our local history. This year’s focus was on a
soldier from our district who served in World War 1. The students as well
as those from the other local schools involved will present their work to
their parents and school staff in September. Well done to our Year 6
leaders who attended – Jorja, Jamillah, Jade, Belle, Mackenzie, Jordan,
Mitchell, Patrick Boyes, Patrick Bier, and Ari.
Staffing
As you know Mrs Rotthier had planned to take 6 weeks Long Service
Leave and travel to Europe with her family however only a day or 2
before she was due to fly out, she slipped on wet grass at home and has
broken her upper arm quite severely. As a result, her trip has had to be
postponed. We wish Jacqui a speedy recovery and hope to see her back at
KPS soon.
Mrs Lynne Dowel is still on her period of Long Service Leave and her class
is working well with Mrs Robyn Hodgson.
I am taking 2 weeks Long Service Leave commencing tomorrow and return
for the final 2 weeks of Term 3. During my absence, Mr Nigel Kilpatrick will
ably fill the Assistant Principal role. His class will be taken by Ms Megan
Berry who has worked in the Year 3 & 4 classes many times recently.
Year 4 Camp to Allambee
Next Monday our Year 4 students head to Allambee for the annual Year 4
Camp. Alllambee Camp is a wonderful adventure camp which will see the
students tested by billy carts, archery, giant swing, low ropes course,
abseiling wall, a massive flying fox, initiative activities and much more.
Having been to Allambee Camp myself, I know the students, staff and
parents who attend will all have a fantastic time. Thank you to Miss
Anderson and Mr Hallas for all their organisation of the camp. We hope
everyone has a marvellous time!

Traffic Signage Changes in Wrench’s Lane
In consultation with the South Gippsland Shire Council, there are now new line markings and signage in Wrench’s Lane. These improvements are aimed at ensuring the safety of our school community. Please note the new No Parking areas and the No Standing areas at the pull-in area behind the Senior Building in Wrench’s Lane.
The No Parking area allows parents to stop for 3 minutes to drop off their children. It does not allow for parents to be more than 3 metres from their car.
The No Standing area does not allow for stopping. Students waiting to be picked up by parents in Wrench’s Lane at the Drop Off / Pick Up bay will be encouraged to wait under the eaves of the Senior building. When their parent arrives they can quickly move out the gate next to the pull in bay. Thank you to all of the parents who have made changes to how they drop off and pick up their children. With the new restrictions in place, please remember that there are other spaces around the school that may be useful pick-up points. These include:
Princes Street at the back of the school In the marked bays outside the Court House and Police Station The IGA car park The car park between the Korumburra Hotel Car park and the
furniture shops across the road from school. Parents are also reminded that Wrench’s Lane outside the Year 3-4 building is not an area to pull up and wait for your child. It would be appreciated if those parents who use Wrench’s Lane (down towards the highway) keep moving and don’t stop, thus ensuring a smooth flow of traffic and a quick exit from the school surrounds. Shire By-Laws officers often make snap visits to our school at drop off / pick up time so we seek your help in making sure our traffic all moves smoothly and without hindrance.
PSG Meetings
Over the last 2 weeks, we have been holding our Term 3 meetings
for students who are part of the Program for Students with
Disabilities, Out of Home Care program and those with Koorie
background. These meetings see parents meet with their child’s class
teacher and ES staff to review their child’s progress as well as
consider goals for their child for the next term. Thank you to the
parents and staff for their input into these important meetings.
Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake
Did you spot the mistake in my last report? Well spotted Sophie
McKenzie! Sophie wins a treat from the canteen for her efforts again!
Good luck spotting my very easy mistake in this report. As usual,
there will be a prize for those students who can identify the deliberate
error!
(Continued from page 1) PLEASE!!!! Can you spare just 1 hour to help 1 student at KPS
each week?
Thank you to the 4 adults who have contacted us about being a LAP
Volunteer and spending just 1 hour per week supporting a student at
our school. LAP is a program designed to improve self-esteem,
self-confidence and a sense of achievement in students with
particular needs. Volunteers from the community work with students
on a one-to-one basis on activities determined by the student and
the volunteer together. Volunteers must have a Working with
Children Card and be able to be matched appropriately with our
students but no special skills are required – just a desire to be a
positive influence on a young person’s life. If you would like to find
out more about becoming a volunteer, please contact me at school.
Thank you to Rebecca, Kim, Jenny and James for volunteering your
time. We look forward to having our 2015 LAP program up and
running very soon.
Teacher-in-Training Kate Perry-Hinds
The students in Mrs Zizic’s Year 2 class have had Ms Kate Perry-
Hinds work with them for a number of weeks now and with this being
the last week of her placement, we would like to thank Kate for her
efforts with EZ:2 and wish her the best of luck with her teaching
career. She has worked very well with Ellyn and has had the
opportunity to develop her teaching skills in a very supportive
environment. Thanks Kate and good luck in the future!
Michael’s Supa IGA
Don’t forget about Michael’s Supa IGA Comunity Rewards Program.
This is one way that every family can financially contribute to our
school without making a formal donation. Did you know that just by
shopping at Michael’s Supa IGA, if your customer tag is linked to
KPS, our school receives a donation proportional to the amount
spent? What a simple way to contribute to our school. Last year
Michael’s Supa IGA donated $3,525 to our school just because of
families having a customer tag linked to our school!! Thank you to all
those who regularly support our school in this way. If you don’t have
a customer tag, application forms are available either at our school
Office or Michael’s Supa IGA.

We are now into round 2 of the lunchtime indoor soccer competition. Round 1 showcased some fantastic skill and effort from the students
who played, and it was great to see all students displaying fantastic sportsmanship.
The competition will run right up until week 9 of this term and has allowed Year 4,5 and 6 students of all abilities to participate. Students have
the chance to learn a new sport, exhibit leadership skills, work in a team environment and most importantly have fun whilst they are
exercising.
For most students, the lunchtime competition has linked into the Health unit being taught in the Middle school classrooms.
Last week we were joined by Grant Spence from Spencepro soccer specialists, Grant runs soccer clinics in the local area, his website is www.spencepro.com or you can see Mr Hallas for further details. Grant kindly donated over 20 brand new soccer balls to be handed over during the competition and also invited players and students to attend his clinics.

The Preps certainly enjoyed the Prep Night. They have been writing recounts about the night and by using a visual plan they have been able
to write sentences containing more detail. They are also mastering how to sit their writing on a base line.
The children in Mrs. Clark’s class have as part of their morning welcome routine a morning news and weather
report. Children get to announce the daily news and give a weather report. Seen here are Danay Grabham
Andrews and Maison Taylor Wilton informing us about the day’s news and weather.
Winter is certainly upon us and the children are experiencing playing responsibly outside in wet and cold
conditions. They are encouraged to use their common sense and make good
choices about their wellbeing by wearing suitable clothing, putting on coats,
playing on the hard surfaces, keeping themselves dry and making good use of
the under covered areas. However, accidents do occur so having a change of
clothes, some underwear and socks packed in their bag helps cater for those
instances. If your child does come home in clothes supplied from the school
please return them to the office.

Year 6 Newsletter:
The last few weeks the Year 6 students have been busy presenting their “Living Things” projects about a threatened species. We have been
very impressed with the standard and creativity of the students’ work and each of them should be proud of what they’ve achieved.
Over the coming weeks, the students will become scientists and begin watching and partaking in scientific experiments! Hopefully the roof
will stay on the Senior Building, and the students will learn about chemical reactions as well!
Year 5 Newsletter:
The Year 5 students have been working hard in fractions these past few weeks. They’ve been working on a range of activities, from basic
number lines to multiplying fractions. It’s certainly been making the students hungry when figuring out how many ‘slices of the pizza’ have
been eaten and how many are left! It’s been great to see the students engaged and working well.
In Science, the students have recently been ‘thinking like a scientist’. They’ve been forming a hypothesis based around a simple question and
they’ve been lucky enough to actually test their theory and record the observations. Fortunately only two eggs were broken… but that’s
another story! It was magic to see so many eggs floating between a layer of water and brine. A great little experiment… and hopefully some
great scientists in the making!

Over the last two weeks all the students have been learning about the colourful art works of Aboriginal artist and designer Bronwyn Bancroft. Her modern paintings have been collected and shown by galleries throughout Australia and around the world. Bronwyn has illustrated several
award winning children’s books as well.
Photo of her books
Students at KPS have been inspired by her animal and landscape paintings. They have achieved great results focusing on elements of design such as line, shape, colour and
repetition.
