Dear Fellow Pilgrims, The largest and oldest celebration of the Church will soon be upon us. It is likely the sanctuary will be packed during at least two of our services that day. The Altar Guild will have spent many hours decorating in preparation for the celebration; the Bell Choir will provide some beautiful special music; many who attend will be decked out in new outfits; when the words, “Christ is risen” are spoken, the response, “Christ is risen, indeed!” will be spoken with gusto; and many will leave that morning with a sense of hope and empowerment upon hearing of God’s great sacrifice given for each of us. The following week, a day called the “Second Sunday of Easter” on the Church calendar, will likely live up to another name given to the day, “Low Sunday.” Yes, with the echoes of “Christ is risen” still ringing in our ears and the scent of Easter lilies fresh in our nostrils, many will chose to stay away on the week following Easter. And it won’t be all because the CEO’s (Christmas and Easter Only) will have skewed the attendance figures upward, either. People, for whatever reason, stay away in droves on the week following the Easter celebration. I have to admit this is a phenomenon I have never understood. If people attended the Good Friday service and didn’t come back I could understand. After all, Good Friday ends with us remembering Jesus being crucified and placed in the grave. For many death marks the point of no return, the end, the final journey, a one way ticket to paradise. But Easter? Easter says to us death does not have the last word and that Good Friday is not the end. Easter ushers us into a new reality reminding us that God’s unconditional love is forever, and not something we receive and celebrate only one day a year. Many of the earliest followers of Jesus were Jews who were accustomed to worshipping on the Sabbath, essentially Saturday. Immediately, however, the day for Christ followers to worship changed from Saturday to Sunday because Sunday was the day of Jesus’ resurrection. Each time the believers/followers gathered for worship, with the exception of Easter day itself, the worship was considered a “mini-Easter” celebration, as we still celebrate each Sunday as a mini-Easter today. We will have a wonderful Easter celebration again this year. And the week following will likely live up the its nickname, “Low Sunday.” Still, we celebrate with those who attend and those Christ followers around the world who gather on a weekly basis to remember that we continue to celebrate Easter, God’s “Yes,” to us and to life. Your Partner in Ministry, Pastor Gary
QUARTERLY CONGREGATIONAL MEETING SUNDAY, APRIL 19
FOLLWING THE 11:00 AM WORSHIP IN THE SANCTUARY
We will need a quorum of 50 voting members to decide upon a new “Welcome Statement” for SVLC. The proposed new statement is as follows:
All are welcome! As a community of faith following Jesus’ commandment to love one another, the members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church are called to include all people seeking a relationship with Christ, regardless of age, economic status, ethnic background, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation gender identity or marital status. We affirm with the Apostle Paul that “in Christ Jesus we are all children of God through faith, for all who were baptized into Christ have clothed themselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26-28)

“Commit your future to the Lord! Trust in Him, and he will act on your behalf.” Psalms 37:5 ESV
“But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was
crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as He said. Come, see the place where He lay. Then
go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead, and behold, He is going before
you to Galilee; there you will see Him. See, I have told you.” Matthew 21:9-10
We are blessed to be able to share the joy of Easter with the students of GSLS. During Holy
Week, chapel services will be held each morning at which time students will focus on Christ’s
journey to the cross. Students will also be invited to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter
services.
April is the month for Easter celebration, the Golf Tournament/Dinner/Auction and class trips.
Students have their Easter break from April 3, Good Friday to Friday, April 10. Classes resume on
Monday, April 13.
The Golf Tournament and Dinner/Auction are scheduled for Saturday, April 18. The tournament
will take place at the Simi Hills Golf Course. The putting contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the
first Tee will take place at 11:00 a.m. Any four person team that signs up, before the Golf
Tournament, will save $18.00 per person. Golfers are needed for the tournament, so if you golf, or
know of others who enjoy golfing, please consider signing up to play. It’s going to be a fun day
and “Scramble” rules will apply, so you do not need to be an outstanding golfer to participate. The
Dinner/Auction is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Eichele Hall. Tickets are not required to come to
this portion of the day’s festivities and the auction is open to the public.
The following day, April 19, the eighth grade and their chaperones leave for the annual trip to
Washington D.C. The class is scheduled to return April 25. They are very excited and have been
preparing for this special trip since last summer.
On Monday, April 27 two grades will leave for weeklong trips. The sixth grade will go to El
Camino Pines and the seventh grade to Catalina Island. The end of that same week, the fourth and
fifth grades will leave for their overnight trip to Dana Point at “Life in the Abyss.” By Monday,
May 4, all trips will have finished and students will be preparing for the end of the year.
We wish God’s richest blessings upon all our fellow believers as we celebrate the resurrection of
Jesus Christ. Christ is risen! He has risen indeed!

PLEASE…HELP SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL Luther’s Attic…a thrift store in Moorpark at 189 High Street
that helps support Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
Give donations, shop and/or volunteer your time!!
It all helps our Christian school ministry here in Simi Valley. The proceeds from the store are
split between three schools that receive financial support from the store. The financial split is
based on volunteer hours, so more volunteer hours from our church means stronger financial
support to Good Shepherd. For further information please call: 805-523-7188.

Samaritan Center of Simi Valley
Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church serves a meal to the less fortunate at the
Samaritan Center (located at 280 Royal Ave) on the
1st
Wednesday of every month from 4:00-6:00 pm
We need volunteers to buy and deliver food to the Samaritan Center,
AND…serve food or donate money *If you would like to help, please contact Yvonne Baird at 584-2521.
Thank you for your prayers and support for this important ministry.
SAMARITAN CENTER Many churches have programs that feed the hungry, but how many have three programs? Shepherd of the Valley
has a long history of helping the hungry and it is done solely through designated offerings. Each month we take a
collection for World Hunger and remit those funds to the ELCA, trusting them to disburse funds world-wide to
feed the hungry. Each week, we host a meal in Eichele Hall “Still Waters Café” that is prepared in our kitchen
under the leadership of Ray & Sally Valderrama. This is our most visible feeding ministry and it has been successful
beyond the original vision, thanks to the generosity of the congregation and the Valderramas’ ability to write grant
requests and publicize the ministry’s needs throughout our community. Our third feeding ministry is a quieter one,
but feeds the most downtrodden amongst us at Samaritan Center. It is also funded through designated offerings.
Rick & Yvonne Baird have led this ministry for many years and on the
1st Wednesday of each month, 4 volunteers serve the folks coming to dinner that night. The meal is the same each
month – fried chicken, potato salad and fresh veggies, Kings Hawaiian rolls, juice and cookies. The guests are
always very appreciative, love the meal and often take plates to go. Because of the “quietness” of this ministry, it is
also the least supported with designated offerings and at year-end, the funds set aside for Samaritan Center were
depleted. The monthly cost of the meal and supplies is approximately $180, and monthly guests range from 20 – 40
persons. Please help to support this quiet ministry that is appreciated so much by those who have no home and
don’t have to go hungry because of our community’s efforts. Please consider a designated gift at some point during
the year. Thank you!

We hope that everyone is experiencing a very joyous and Happy Easter season as
we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!
Here are a few Easter related questions to consider this Easter season. We know about the Last
Supper, trial, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. But do we really? What was on the menu at
the Last Supper? How many times did Jesus speak on the cross? Jesus appeared how many times
after his resurrection? Where?
And to whom? Some interesting questions to think about, are they not? Discuss them during this
Easter season with your family and friends and see what answers you arrive at. Some of the
answers to these thought provoking questions may not be definitive and are possibly up for debate by
theological scholars and historians, but they will definitely get you thinking and talking. It will not only be enlightening,
but educational and you may learn more about the true significance of Easter. The answers to these questions can be
found in the many books that we have available in our own SVLC library.
As you prepare for Easter, will you be hosting a family Easter brunch or dinner? Why not purchase the required
groceries and necessary accompaniments with scrip gift cards. We have scrip for Vons/Pavilions in our everyday
inventory and Albertsons upon request. Planning to gift the children, grand-children or great grand-children with Easter
baskets, bunnies, candy or colored eggs? Or maybe new spring outfits are on your “must buy” list for this year and you
shop at Target, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, or Ross; you can purchase all of those items with gift cards as well. Whatever it is you
need, we have your gift cards and remember that a percentage of each and every card you purchase is returned to our
church.
We want to wish the church staff and the entire Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church congregation a joyous Easter
season!
In His Service, Marvin and Jenny Kidd, SVLC Scrip Committee
