Page 2: Associated with Pediatric Sedation, Local Anesthetics ......Management of Medical Emergencies in Pediatric Dentistry FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2020 Course Code (20-PD-002) ... Handbook of Medical

COURSE DESCRIPTIONLocal anesthetics (LA) are the safest and most effective drugs in medicine for the prevention and management of pain. However, the young child patients present a challenge for the dentist in relation to the safety versus risk. Dr. Malamed will review current LA formulations, their efficacy and safety in children and discuss differences in a child’s anatomy and technique for achieving effective safe pain control. Current research into new drugs and techniques will be reviewed.

Medical emergencies can, and do, occur in the practice of dentistry. Dr. Malamed will review basic preparation of the dental office and staff, including specifics for the pediatric patient, to recognize and effectively manage these emergencies that might arise in both adults and children. Specific emergencies common to children will be reviewed, including bronchospasm (asthma), seizures, and drug overdose.

OBJECTIVESAt the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Identify and describe the various local anesthetics, their efficacy and safety, and pain control in children.

2. Understand the anatomical differences in a child relative to delivering local anesthetics.

3. Obtain an awareness of new pain controlling medications and new delivery systems.

4. Recognize and manage local anesthetic and sedative overdose.

5. Recognize and manage bronchospasms/respiratory distress, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

6. Identify the basic emergency drugs recommended for both the pediatric and adult office emergency kit.
