“Let The Name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It is He who changes the times and epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men and knowledge to men of understanding; it is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him” (Daniel 2:20-21, NASB). Many of you, just as I, are amazed at the presidential campaigns currently being conducted. Likewise, many of us are praying for God’s wisdom to know how to vote. It appears that neither candidate is qualified to hold the office of president. But, because we have an election process that is being followed, the decision will be decided November 8… so far as man is concerned. So far as God is concerned, He changes the times and epochs (periods) and removes kings (presidents) and establishes kings (presidents). Even though He has given us a role to play in a free democracy, He is still the Sov-ereign God who has all wisdom and power. There is nothing about either of our presidential candidates that God does not know. We have only to look at the party platforms and the running mates to discern which “governance” is closest to God’s word. Character of candidates certainly matters, but the character and over-riding wisdom and power of God matters much more. May God have mercy on us, expose the nation’s deeds of darkness and cause the glorious gospel of Christ to shine upon us (II Cor. 4:3-6). Oh, how we desperately need revival in the church and awakening in the nation!

Encouragingly Yours, Russell Cook

“A Good Pastor” I Timothy 4

This chapter begins with Paul identifying the condition of the church “in later times” he says, “some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.” He then gives young Pastor Timo-thy (and us) some defenses against these conditions. A good Pastor will faithfully LEAD the church in the defense.

I. A good Pastor will be a SERVANT LEADER (v. 6b) A. He will be a BIBLICAL LEADER (v. 6) B. He will be a DISCIPLINED LEADER (vv. 7-8) C. He will be a CONFIDENT LEADER (v. 10)

II. A good Pastor will be an EXEMPLARY LEADER (v. 12) (five exemplary characteristics of a godly Pastor) A. He is an example in WHAT HE SAYS (“in speech”)

Psalm 19:14 B. He is an example in HOW HE ACTS (“in conduct”)

Joshua 1:8 C. He is an example in HOW HE LOVES (“in love”)

Matthew 22:37-39 D. He is an example in HOW TO BELIEVE (“in faith”)

Acts 16:31, Jude 1:3 E. He is an example in HOLY LIVING (“in purity”)

Romans 6:12-14

III. A good Pastor will be a PUBLIC LEADER (vv. 13-16) A. Involves the PUBLIC READING OF SCRIPTURE (v.13b) B. Involves the POWERFUL PREACHING OF SCRIPTURE (v.13c) C. Involves the POSITIVE TEACHING OF SCRIPTURE (v.13d) D. Involves the PERSISTENT DEVOTION TO SERVICE (vv.15-16) The overriding goal of the Pastor and his ministry is to “ensure salvation both for yourself and those who hear you” (v. 16b). With this kind of Pastor the church can be the church that God planned from the beginning.

A Nugget From My Spiritual Journey...

What a day and age in which we live! We live surrounded by confusion and endless talk and swirling differences of opinion. We hear in the news of how human beings are capable of treating one another in the most horrific ways. Natural disasters are happening almost faster than can be reported. Some people have no qualms about habitually lying or maybe flaunting their sins or desperately trying to cover them up. Our national focus seems to imply these issues can be solved by electing the right official(s). As media pundits continually analyze and discuss the latest political news, there still seems to be a remnant of moral awareness—even among those who don't appear or profess to be Christians—as they struggle to hold public figures to a slippery slope of public accountability. "Where does that moral awareness of right and wrong come from?" It literally comes from the remain-ing shadows of the Judeo-Christian truths, based upon knowing the one, true, holy God. That should immediately “pivot” us right back to HIM, to HIS holi-ness, to HIS absolutes, to HIS laws, which are pure and timeless. A strange dichotomy exists in our world today: the attempt to remove the Ten Commandments, for instance, from public display, and yet, many seem disappointed or even astounded when people break those very laws in their everyday living. Why? Because in a civilized nation, who can say they really want to live in a land where people murder, covet, steal, bear false witness (lie), break up marriages with unfaithfulness, and dishonor their parents? If all of those basic tenets of the faith truly disappeared, we would quickly and horribly self-destruct. Yet, that only has to do with the “laws” regarding our relationship with our fellow human beings. The first few of the Ten “laws” speak to our relationship with holy God, giving Him full allegiance and honor. As Christians, our ultimate responsibility is to honor HIM with all that we are and all that we do. Let us not lose our focus and settle for looking to mankind for all of our answers, instead of serving HIM in such a way that we will most assuredly be able to stand in HIS presence one day and hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
