APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
EditorialIt is a proud moment in the brief history of New Jersey chapter of
APPNA to welcome all the attendees of the APPNA FALL meeting. It is even more auspicious to have the APPNA Fall Meeting coincide with the annual EID Gala of NJ APPNA.
NJ-APPNA has come to age with hosting the first national meeting. During the past five years, dedication of its leadership and the zest and enthusiasm of the members, has made it truly one of the most vibrant chapters of APPNA. NJ-APPNA has over the years taken the lead in both community involvement and arranging meaningful programs for the membership. From a successful fundraiser for the earthquake victims in Pakistan, to supporting deserving individuals in the community, to raising funds for disabled (blind) students from Pakistan studying in USA, our members have participated in social welfare and community projects with a passion. Women Physicians forum which was initiated last year has made all the difference in community involvement, and involving our youth has been a major focus over the years. Camaraderie and fellowship can best be seen at all of our functions, be it the annual
picnic, the spring membership meetings or the annual EID Gala, which last year drew over 400 attendees. When people come to an NJ APPNA function they have come to expect near perfection and NJ APPNA delivers it.
Welcome to the Garden State, NJ APPNA style! We wish all APPNA members and their families a very Happy EID and a successful and fun filled Fall meeting.

APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
Enhancing APPNA’s Future Potential! Are We Ready To Act NowMahmood Alam, MD
Mr. Michael Thompson, the first Executive Director of APPNA, who was one of the most experienced people in the field, could not last long. He witnessed the 2004-2005 transition
in APPNA. I asked him about his brief experience with APPNA at the time of his departure. He said, APPNA’s greatest asset is its selfless volunteers and the worst aspect is conflicting work
relations among its officers. Arguably, APPNA could have done much better had we worked in harmony to achieve our objectives over the years. The unity of purpose is the hallmark of work ethics needed for ongoing success. Unfortunately, we had lacked that discipline. As a result, we have failed to garner the best potential of APPNA’s volunteer force. Why a 31 year old APPNA could not build an infrastructure that is paramount for better outcomes and continued success? One of our esteemed past President explains, “The fact that APPNA is constitutionally a President-dominated organization and that the term of office for the President is only one year does not help develop a long term well defined agenda. Since different power blocs tend to elect different candidates every year, the thought process changes and the ultimate goals of the organization realign frequently. Officers should be ready to accept certain checks on their authority which will actually deepen their influence and legitimacy. Frequently, officers forget that political process is a continuum and not a single event. Therefore, there is a constant effort at reinventing the wheel, which basically creates a lot of back sliding. If the aim is to improve service to the ordinary member then the effort should be to develop systems which would help the whole organization” (Ref. APPNA Qissa, Chapter 7, page 216, a perspective by Raana Akbar).
Most APPNA Presidents would agree to one year Presidential term. The continuity of work can easily be achieved by promoting harmony amongst the officers and by promoting respect to the person who is the captain of the ship regardless of his political affiliations. The executive committee, provided working in concert, in fact gives a President three years to work. President Elect – President – Immediate Past President is the link that should provide sufficient time for someone to accomplish a great deal in normal circumstances. To that end, I started to lend support to all the APPNA projects that my predecessor had initiated. Now, as my term approaches to the end, I am taking the next President in full confidence to promote a good deal of understanding. And I must tell you that Dr. Syed A. Samad has been very instrumental in promoting harmony amongst the present executive committee. It is a good sign for the future of APPNA. Let me talk about two issues that need to be accomplished for a better future of APPNA before I focus on what needs to be discussed and approved in the Fall Council Meeting.
Five Year Strategic Planning: In the recent years, the Presidents of 2003-2005 had special brain storming sessions of the council for three consecutive years to formulate a five year strategic vision of APPNA at the beginning of their terms. These sessions received a great deal of attention and had meaningful participation by the junior and the senior leaders alike. I had the opportunity to participate in all the three of them. A lot of work and effort went into these strategic planning meetings. Unfortunately, nothing materialized out of those discussions. There is a dire need to have a five year strategic plan for APPNA. It is such an important aspect of our working that it is supposed to be overseen by the board of trustees as mentioned in our bylaws, “The Board of Trustees shall oversee long-range and strategic planning for the Association” (page 18, article 16.7.2). We must collectively admit our responsibility that lapses in governance and oversight has happened in the past. Until or unless we have such a plan in place, we cannot expect from new leadership year after year to move the agenda forward and remain focused on the strategically planed direction of APPNA. I suggest to obtain minutes/notes of all the three strategic planning sessions (2003-2005) and summary of proposed plans be presented in the very first council meeting of 2009. The hard work of previous Presidents must be acknowledged instead of re inventing the wheel. I believe that the President Elect and Secretary of APPNA for 2009 should take lead in this venture.
Ratification of Amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws by the General Body: This is the leading item of the old business that needs addressing. A new request for approval of the amendments was mailed again to the membership. This
3[ ]www.appnanj.com www.appna.org
APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
work was very diligently done by the Constitution and Bylaws Committee in 2006 and 2007. These changes were approved by the APPNA Council after due process. The three important features of the proposed amendments are the following; a procedure for the recall of an officer, moving of the election schedule for the officers after the summer meeting, and committee appointment on a three year staggered term basis. I strongly believe that passing of these amendments is vital for improved functioning of APPNA. We must accomplish this task before the end of the year to implement it for 2009. This laborious work needs help from all the council members immediately.
Proposed Action Items for the Fall Council Meeting 2008: The agenda of the meeting will be provided to all the Council members in advance. Without going into details, the Council should expect to deliberate and approve numerous items that include but not limited to the following:
1. APPNA Endowment Fund: As a grass root organization with more than 30 chapters, APPNA must invest in her future by creating an endowment that could cater for our present and future needs. The profits from the endowment fund investment could be used for the development of our community both in the US and in Pakistan.
2. Dr. Ayub Ommaya Memorial Lecture and Scholarship Fund: Dr. Ommaya, the third President of APPNA, a distinguished neurosurgeon and inventor, passed away on July 11, 2008. An Ad Hoc committee will present its recommendations about this fund.
3. The Society for Future Physicians: I am convinced that the Society for Future Physicians (medical students) deserves to be part of APPNA even if it takes an amendment to the bylaws. I believe they can become part of the Council immediately without having a vote therein. Similarly, APPNA DENTAL may be considered by the council to be an affiliate organization that sits in the council without having a right to vote since becoming a component society needs a constitutional amendment.
4. Medical Education & Research Investment Taskforce (APPNA MERIT): This Ad Hoc Health Education Committee began working in 2007 on programs for APPNA to help improve medical education in Pakistan. The APPNA MERIT committee believes that they have made significant progress and this committee should be given the status of a Standing Committee by the Council.
5. Free Health Clinics: The challenge that lies ahead of APPNA is to adopt and promote this venture of free health clinics. Our Chapters can play a significant role in these charitable health initiatives. It will promote goodwill of our community in the American public. It is an opportunity that we must not miss. The initiation of a health clinic at the APPNA Central Office to be managed by the Pakistan Physicians Society (PPS), is the first step in that direction, which have received much appreciation from the membership.
6. Approval of the Canadian Chapter of APPNA: The presence of a strong Canadian Chapter of APPNA is long overdue. The Fall Council will have the distinct honor to formally approve this chapter.

APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
A Message from APPNA President-ElectDear APPNA Friends,
Assalam-o-Alaikum. Welcome to the 2008 APPNA Fall meeting in East Brunswick, NJ.
The Host Committee under the leadership of Mohammad Zubair has done a great job in arranging this meeting. Several months of committed and selfless hard work will ensure
inshallah lifetime of experience for the entire APPNA family.
All APPNA meetings are always very joyous and productive events. It gives all of us a chance to reconnect with many in the APPNA family. We will get to attend social seminars and an excellent CME program, and to hear from our guests who come to us from the academic and legislative worlds within the United States.
APPNA members, while you are enjoying yourself, please take a moment to appreciate the involvement of the local host committee. I would specially like to recognize Dr. Mohammad Zubair and his team for their hard work and diligence. I would also like to thank all of you for being here, and hope you will be available to help me move APPNA along in 2009 and be there to enjoy our summer meeting in the beautiful and serene San Francisco.
I am privileged to report to you that the new membership verification process finished smoothly and professionally. Some component societies and chapters have been asked to furnish their accounts and we are in the process of collecting and collating these.
My presidency for 2009 will be based on the principles of transparency, accountability, and professionalism. My vision of APPNA is for it to be a pristine, professional body. APPNA has a tremendous pool of talent. My job is to draw on this talent and make APPNA a more effective body for its members. It is my earnest hope that when I call on you to help APPNA, you will volunteer your resources, both time and money. I will do my level best to make you feel that APPNA’s success is our success, and APPNA’s failure is my failure as its president. Let us work together towards success, for failure should not even be an option – Insha’ Allah.
Once again, I would like to thank all of you for your trust, and would most humbly request for your prayers and good wishes as I take over the helms of APPNA in the New Year.
Sincerely, Syed A. Samad

APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
A Message from the President APPNA NJDear Friends, Assalamu Alaykum and Eid Mubarak.
APPNA New Jersey Chapter had a very successful year. From the very beginning, the members and executive committee were eager to work hard and cohesively to bring the organization to
the next level. In March 2008 APPNA NJ along with the Women’s Forum organized a wonderful program at the Woodbridge Hilton. The program was inspired by the youth of the APPNA fam-ily and the community. The youth performed various activities and received our gratitude. Also, a dinner was arranged in the honor of the community elders. APPNA NJ had a very successful pic-nic this year. The credit goes to the Executive committee, volunteers, and especially to Dr. Farooq Rehman who strived very hard to make the picnic an enjoyable event.
I represented the New Jersey Chapter at the central APPNA’s spring meeting at Kentucky in March this year and also participated in the Summer Meeting at Washington DC. It was a great experience to learn about our Na-tional organization and the amount of work done for our membership and the community. Now, we are preparing for the annual Eid Dinner along with the Central APPNA’s Fall Meeting. APPNA NJ is grateful to Dr. Mahmood Alam, president of Central APPNA to bring the fall meeting to New Jersey.
I would also like to offer a special thanks to APPNA NJ EC, which is working very hard to make this function successful. I would like to mention Dr. M. Zubair for his untiring efforts to organize the weekly telephone conferences and collecting funds for the event. Special thanks to Dr. Aamir Zaman and his team for organizing the CME program. I thank Dr. Meh-reen Zaman and Dr. Nasar Qureshi for taking care of the laborious work involved in bringing out the special edition of the Fall Meeting APPNA Journal. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Farrukh Nizam, Dr. Nadeem Haque, Dr Yasmeen Chaud-hary, Dr. Fauzia Anwar, Dr. Shahnaz Akhtar and Dr. Shahida Abbas for working hard and coming up with new ideas to make this event successful.
Thanks everyone! Muhammad Siddique, M.D.

APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
APPNA Treasurer’s ReportDear APPNA Family, Assalam-o-Alaikum and Eid Mubarak!
I congratulate the Editors for bringing out a Newsletter /Journal at the occasion of APPNA Fall Meeting. I also commend the efforts of Host Committee for the hard work they have put in to
make this meeting a real success. You know that I have been personally involved with this meeting from signing the contract with Marriott to making a budget. It is imperative to make this meet-ing a memorable and a profitable event for APPNA. It is my pleasure to submit a brief account of activities that I have been doing as the Treasurer of APPNA 2008.
As your Treasurer, it is my duty and responsibility to oversee APPNA’s finances as well as enhance APPNA’s fiscal stability. It is my privilege to report that during my term thus far I have been ac-
tive to obtaining several grants for APPNA. We have received over $15,000 in unrestricted grant from Biotronics and the money has already been deposited into APPNA accounts. We hope to receive more money from Biotronics in the near future. A grant request was approved by Boston Scientific for approximately $10,000 for APPNA. A representative from Boston Scientific in St. Louis, Missouri will be attending the Fall APPNA Meeting in Brunswick, New Jersey as well. They will be setting up a booth for Boston Scientific along with other pharmaceutical companies. Each booth sells for $1,500. This is being done in an effort to make Fall APPNA Meeting profitable.
Several other companies are also in the process of approving grants for APPNA, including Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-Aven-tis, and many others. I hope that these grants will be available to APPNA not only this year but in the years to come.
As always, I will continue to work diligently for APPNA and its membership. As APPNA’s Treasurer, I would like to ask ev-eryone to please work together in order to increase very much needed sponsorship for APPNA. If you need assistance or advice in regards to acquiring sponsorships or grants, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Currently, APPNA’s accounts are being handled properly and professionally. I keep constantly in-touch with our accountant and executive director. Although the current stock market is quite volatile and depressing, APPNA’s long term investments are bearing minimal possible loss as compared with the rest of the market. A detailed Treasurer’s Report and of Finance Com-mittee’s report will be presented to the Fall Council Meeting. Thank you for your continued support and for electing me as The Secretary of the Association for 2009.

APPNA Fall Meeting 2008
APPNA New Jersey Chapter:Historical Perspective – The First Five Years
It was the spring of 2003 that a movement to establish a New Jersey Chapter APPNA began, which was initiated by Dr. Mahmood Alam. Letters were sent to about 150 Pakistani physicians asking them to attend on April 27, 2003. There were
more than 37 physicians in this inaugural meeting on Sunday afternoon at Shahnawaz restaurant in Edison. This meet-ing was the culmination of initial talks between Drs. Mahmood Alam, Shaukat Chaudhary and Mohammed A. Zubair. The vision and goals of the proposed Chapter and bylaws were prepared. Dr. Mahmood Alam made the case for a formal chapter of APPNA in New Jersey where a significant concentration of Pakistani-descent physicians existed. “We must organize to promote the objectives of medical education, medical relief, philanthropic work, advocacy for our civil rights, and for the sake and future of our children and social interaction”, Dr. Alam argued. It was an open forum. The majority expressed their support for the idea. There were skeptics present and soon it looked like the whole idea would be embroiled in arguments. Had it not been the timely intervention of Dr. S. Sultan Ahmed and Dr. Nasar Qureshi, the meeting would have ended in a fiasco. Soon there was decorum and an agreement was reached to form the NJ Chapter of APPNA. Dr. Alam proposed Dr. Shaukat Chaudhary for the President and he was unanimously elected along with Dr. Mahmood Alam as Secretary and Dr. Avais Masud as Treasurer. That was followed by the election of the Executive Committee and Regional councillors. This meeting gave birth to a group of energetic physicians with a vision and goal to make this chapter the most dynamic chapter in APPNA.
The first Eid function was held on 11/28/2003 at the Marriott hotel, in Somerset, which was attended by 250 physicians and their families, making it a tradition. Since then, after every Eid ul Fitr, a dinner is hosted by the APPNA NJ chapter bring-ing NJ physicians and their families together for a memorable evening with superb food and entertainment. The NJ Chap-ter also started another tradition of achievement awards in the field of medicine intended not only to honor the individual for their scientific work but to raise awareness of academic endeavors in our community. The first award was presented to Dr. Adnan Qureshi, an academic neurologist. A highlights section in the annual journal of the chapter is also dedicated to acknowledge the achievements of medical professionals. Similarly, an award for community service was also introduced in 2007.
Dr. Avais Masud was President of NJ-APPNA 2005. The NJ-Chapter of APPNA played a significant role in the relief efforts for the victims after the devastating earthquake hit in Pakistan on October 8, 2005. The Eid dinner in 2005, was dedicated to the earthquake struck Pakistanis and a very successful fund-raiser was organized raising over $50,000 for the relief ef-forts. The total cash raised for the earthquake relief reached $200,000 under the Presidency of Dr. Mohammad A. Zubair in 2006. In addition, our local doctors expeditiously volunteered their time in the disaster relief efforts including Dr. Taimur Zaman and Dr. Pervaiz Malik. They volunteered in the remotest areas and presented their heartbreaking observations of the earthquake devastation. On a positive note, it was amazing to see how an under developed nation with no concept of disaster relief pulled together magnanimously for this humanitarian cause. On staff physicians at St. Barnabas Medical System helped create a relief fund and the philanthropic side of our physicians was exposed with this calamity leading to the inception of local welfare projects. These ongoing projects include medical and non-medical projects ranging from sup-porting and volunteering at soup kitchens, educating the community on topics ranging from breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes and stroke at health fairs, assisting financially and physically in obtaining medical supplies ranging from wheel-chairs to medications for the indigent population.
In 2007 Dr. Nasar Qureshi initiated numerous new ventures as the President of the Chapter. The Young Physicians Com-mittee was created to help medical students and physicians of Pakistani origin in obtaining residencies, clerkships and fellowships and to coordinate with NJ residency program directors in facilitating interviews and early detection of available positions in collaboration with APPNA committee for Young physicians.

APNNA-NJ CHAPTER PRESIDENTS
APPNA NJ Chapter approved the formation of The Women’s Physician Forum in 2007. The vision was to provide a forum for the women physicians to network with other women physicians and discuss issues of mutual interest with peers. The formation of subcommittees on Community Outreach and Youth Forum was developed under the Women’s Forum. The inaugural event was hosted on June 9th 2007 at Shezan restaurant in which over 200 women participated. The key note speakers were Ms. Sarah El-Shazly, Chief of the Bureau of Prevention and Community Relations in the New Jersey Divi-sion on Civil Rights, Office of the Attorney General and Honorable Barbara Buono, State Senator from New Jersey. Since its inception, the women’s forum has actively participated in multiple community outreach programs and also held the first ever Youth and Children’s Program in May 2008 in conjunction with the NJ Chapter spring meeting. This unique and memorable event was completely organized and directed by our youth, while the parents were amazed at the performance of their children. This program created a special bond amongst our youth, which promoted much needed friendships and strengthened their confidence on being Pakistani-Americans.
The success of the New Jersey chapter is evident by the steady growth in membership and the participation of local physi-cians in its activities. The Annual Eid function which was attended by approximately 250 five years back drew an atten-dance of over 400 last year. The paid membership increased from 65 in 2006 to over 125 in 2007. The increased involve-ment is indeed a result of the efforts of the executive council members and members of various committees, who have over the years made it their business to run all functions with a professional panache, from launching the website to the publi-cation of annual magazine. In addition, a new tradition of annual picnic was started in 2005 with fun activities for adults and children and a healthy cricket competition involving the Northern versus Southern NJ regions as competing rivals. Dr. Mohammad Siddique continues to build on the work of his predecessors as President 2008.
The vision for the next 5 years includes many projects ranging from increasing the membership in APPNA and the NJ Chapter, creating a hospital liaison committee which the local community can access when needed, creating a web based medical directory listing all medical providers including pharmacies, medical and surgical equipment suppliers, billing, tax and medico-legal services, creating a medical journal and interactive website.
This year the APPNA fall meeting is being held in NJ with NJ-APPNA being the host. This has led to a well coordinated ef-fort to make this event a real success. NJ-APPNA welcomes all the delegates of the Fall Meeting of 2008 and hopes to make this meeting a true APPNA experience.
The editorial board recognizes the significant contribution of Dr. Farrukh Nizam in compiling the above article.
