Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) was theforemost composer and ambassador oI tangomusic, who carried the slgnature sound ofArgentina to clubs and concert halls aroundthe world.

Piazzolla was born in 1921 in Mar delPlata, on the coast south of Buenos Aires, butlived in New York City from 1924 to 1937 .lnNew York the young Ptazzolla tuned into thevlbrant jazz scene and bandleaders such asDuke Elllngton and Cab Calloway. At age 12,he received his first bandoneon, a type ofbutton accordion that is the principal vorceof tango, and began playing music from theclassical repertoire. Soon after his familyreturned to Argentina in 1937, Piazzollajoined the popular tango orchestra of AnibalTioilo and-while sti1l a teenager-estab-lished himself as a talented bandoneon playerand arranger.

In Argentina, Piazzolla continued tostudy classical music, too, wlth the composerAlberto Ginastera and others. In 1954,Piazzolla's composition "Buenos Aires" wonhim a scholarship ro study in Paris withNadia Boulanger, who encouraged him tofind his own voice by tapping into hispassion for tango. Back in Argentina in thelate 1950s, Piazzolrla did just that, laying thegroundwork for what become known astango nuelo-r.ew tango.

In 1960 he formed his seminal group

Quinteto Tango Nuevo, Ieaturing bandoneonalongside violin, guitar, piano, and bass. Inlhe ensuing years Piazzol la ' ' music increas-ingly used dissonance, metrical shifts,counterpolnt, and other techniques inspiredby modern classical composition and jazz

orchestras. In Argentina, where tango is asource of national pride and rdentity, sometango purists were incensed by these radicaldepartures from tradition, and ln the late1960s even Argentinas military governmentcriticized Piazzolla lbr being too avant-garde.

Piazzolla left behind a huge body ofmu: ic-more than 750 works-and classicrecordings such as Adiris Nonino and Tango:Zero Hour, as well as collaborations withartists as diverse as poet/author Jorge LuisBorges (El Tango), jazz vlbraphonist GaryBurton (The New Tango), and the Kronos

Quartet (Five Tango Sensations). In 1986,Piazzolla's music was featured in theBroadway hit Tango Argentino. In 2001Amadeus Press published Astor Piazzolla: AMemoir, the remarkable life story (as told tojournalist Natalio Gorin) of one of the 20thcentury's true musical iconoclasts.
