HistoryThe Astoria was designed by Edward Albert Stone who also designed the Astoria’s in Brixton, Streatham, Finsbury Park, Charing Cross Road and the Old Kent Road. It opened in December 1933 and comprised a Cinema capable of seating 1,823 people, a Tea Room and Restaurant and full stage facilities. The Astoria continued as a Cinema until May 1977 when it wasclosed and converted to a Bingo Hall for a short period thereafter.Since then, the building has seen several different uses including aground floor retail use and a dance school on the first floor.
