Human Rights and Equality:The Centre for Global Women’sStudies is measuring theeconomic cost of violenceagainst women and girls incountries around the world,while experts in internationalhuman rights law and disabilitylaw continue to inform policy atthe highest levels.
Lifecourse: The Institute forLifecourse and Society focuseson older people, children andfamilies, and persons withdisabilities. It is the firstinstitution in Ireland to host aUNESCO Chair, advancingresearch and training in theareas of children, youth andcivic engagement.
Big Data: The Insight Centre for Data Analytics, with 350 researchers andmore than 40 industry partners, is co-hosted by NUI Galway. It harnessesthe power of data for many purposes, such as reducing energyconsumption, maximising medical information or enhancing businessperformance.
Biomedical Science: Ireland’s onlyfacility for manufacturing adult stemcells for human trials is at NUI Galway.Through its clinical and translationalresearch facility, co-located on hospitalgrounds beside the campus, biomedicalresearch experts are advancingtherapies for medical challenges suchas stroke, Parkinson’s disease, diabetesand cancer.
Digital Humanities andArchives: NUI Galway ishome to a wealth ofarchival material datingback to 1485. In thevanguard of digitalhumanities research, theUniversity is home to theworld’s largest digitaltheatre archive, that ofthe Abbey Theatre.
Health Promotion: The Centre for Health Promotion Research, the onlyone of its kind in Ireland, has World Health Organisation (WHO) status forits role in health promotion education and research.
Med-tech: Galway is one of five globalhubs, in a medtech market worth €95billion annually in the EU. The CÚRAMCentre for Medical Device Research,with 250 researchers and 24 industrypartners, is based at NUI Galway and iscreating the next generation ofinnovative medical technologies.
Sustainability: The Ryan Institute forEnvironmental, Marine and EnergyResearch is contributing to theunderstanding of environmentalchallenges and marine ecosystems,and developing solutions in renewableenergy and waste treatment.

The University’s proximity tothe Connemara Gaeltacht –the largest Irish-speakingregion – enables it to supportthe educational, economicand cultural needs of Irish-speaking communities in theGaeltacht and around theworld. The University offers abilingual environment wherethe Irish language is regularlyused in academic and sociallife on campus.
Sport is central to life at NUI Galway, and our sporting facilities are some of the best of any Irish university. We havefostered national champions andInternationals in Rugby, Rowing, Boxing,Swimming, Basketball, Athletics,Windsurfing, Climbing and Sailingamongst others.
Our athletes have achieved recognition intheir chosen sports at Olympic Games,World Championships, University WorldChampionships, European Champions,and Rugby Six Nations and as intercountyplayers in all five codes of Gaelic sport.

NUI Galway is home to a growing collection of archives from some of the most iconic cultural icons: including filmmaker, John Huston;writer, John McGahern; playwright, Thomas Kilroy; and the Druid,Gate, Lyric and Taibhdhearc theatre archives. Our project to digitisethe Abbey Theatre’s archive is the largest of its kind in the world
