Bread Broken for a New World

I n today’s short passage from Mark’s

Gospel we see Jesus introducing the

Paschal Mystery to his disciples by

prophesying his death and resurrection.

We’re told “they did not understand the say-

ing, and they were afraid to question him.”

Were they really afraid of questioning Je-

sus? Or were they afraid of what this say-

ing might mean for them? They weren’t

touching this. It was best to remain silent.

So, unwilling to let this important mo-

ment go by unaddressed, Jesus asked them

a seemingly unrelated question. “What

were you arguing about on the way?” Again,

the disciples remained silent. They were

like children caught doing something they

weren’t supposed to be doing. This was very

revealing.

At the beginning of this chapter Jesus

was transfigured in the presence of Peter,

James and John. They saw his glory in a

blaze of light, and in the light, they saw him

conversing with Moses and Elijah. Luke’s

Gospel tells us that they were discussing

Jesus’ coming departure, his death, his

Passover. The disciples focused on the glory

they saw. They ignored the road to that

glory that Jesus was discussing with Moses

and Elijah. And they weren’t even focusing

on his glory, but on the glory that could be

We are resting easy with our decision

to keep the Toddler Playgroup in session

during this most difficult past year. Albeit, with a reduced registration, the program

provided a wonderful source of enrichment

and fun for the children.

We are even more confident as we ap-proach the September ’21 - June ’22 school

year. Registration is in progress for the

Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday

classes at either 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM or

11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. We offer a loving atmosphere where the

little ones can come and have their first

school experience, making new friends and

learning how nice it can be to go to school. Call the Director, Pauline Reenock, at:

(212) 288-5082 ext. 10 or email her at

[email protected] for more information.

Visit us anytime! All Covid regulations have been arranged and will be followed. We are

following the current CDC guidelines and

all adults in attendance must show proof of

vaccination.

ST. JEAN BAPTISTE TODDLER GROUP

In a brotherly spirit, I join in this message of hope for a brighter future. Thanks to God and to the work of many, we now have vaccines to protect us from COVID-19. They grant us the hope of end-ing the pandemic, but only if they are available to all and if we work together. Being immunized with vaccines authorized by the competent authorities is an act of love. And contributing to ensure the majority of people are vaccinated is an act of love. Love for oneself, love for one’s family and friends, love for all people. Love is also social and political, there is social love and po-litical love; it is universal, always overflowing with small gestures of personal charity capable of trans-forming and improving societies (cf. Laudato si’, no. 231, cf. Fratelli tutti, 184). Vaccination is a simple but profound way of promoting the common good and caring for each other, especially the most vulnerable. I pray to God that everyone may contribute their own small grain of sand, their own small gesture of love; no matter how small, love is always great. Contribute with these small gestures for a better future. God bless you, and thank you.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL OF US FROM

POPE FRANCIS

NEW YORK COMMON PANTRY

The NY Common Pantry is asking for toiletries for men, women and youth along with the following food donations.

Please leave your donations at Saint Joseph’s altar or bring them to the parish office. Thank you all for your continual support!

For many New Yorkers, food insecurity is a persis-tent problem. They lack access to enough nutritious food to have an active, healthy life. The pandemic has deepened the hunger crisis as 1 million additional peo-ple experienced food insecurity in 2020.

St. Jean’s is an original founding sponsor of the Pan-try and is totally supportive of its mission to help indi-viduals, families and communities in need. Support from all of us is necessary to aid NYCP in fulfilling its mission.

A QUICK REPORT ON PROJECTS

Since January 1, 2021 we have invested $394,125 in upgrades for our church building.

1. The replacement of the blower for the organ, re-lated construction and electric expenses totaled $84,495.

2. The purchase of a new lighting board was $35,000. It is presently in the process of being installed. Installation will be billed at the conclu-sion of the project.

3. The replacement of the bathroom in the theater cost $16,700.

4. The demolition of the bathroom uncovered a serious series of leaks originating from the north and south outdoor staircases. The leaking over the years had begun to compromise the steel beams supporting the stairs. Several stairs needed to the reset and a section replaced. This cost $88,800.

5. $169,130 was spent on many small, “ordinary” repairs.

6. The Vault Project has been paid for but we con-tinue to wait for NYC permits to conclude the work.

THE GOOD NEWS IS that everything has been paid in full. We’ve pretty much depleted our Restoration Account - but thankfully many of you have donated to the account and made all this work possible.
