    You are probably tired o people asking, What do you want to be when you grow

    up? Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most havent got a

    clue. The idea o choosing a career is intimidating, and it eels like its ar in the

    uture. Theres little time in the commotion o classes, activities, sports, work, and un to

    think about what career you want to pursue ater graduation rom high school or college.

    It pays, though, to take the time to think about your uture career. The truth is that

    youll save a lot o time and money i you have a direction in lie, as opposed to just

    nishing high school and worrying about it later. Its really a matter o dollars and

    sense. I you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will

    make you highly marketableand highly paidwhen you look or work. And it only

    makes sense to have an idea o what you want to do rather than just wandering aimlessly

    through school.

    Nobody wants that. Not your parents. Not your teachers. Not your riends. They want

    you tobesomebody. They want you to use your talents, ollow your interests, and pursue

    your ambitions to become great at what you love to

    do in lie. Thats what you should want, too.

    So the time is right to take charge o your lie and

    think about the uture. You need a plan o action

    or how to get rom where you are today to where

    you want to be in a ew years: starting out on a

    personally and proessionally rewarding career.

    Thats what AchieveTexas in Actionis all about. The

    magazine you are holding is one o 16 guides to dierent

    career clusters. It is designed to help you make smarter

    decisions about your education and career options.

    Youve heard the phrase, Inormation is power. Well, this magazine is power. It puts

    you squarely in charge o your uture, rom creating your Texas Achievement Plan (TAP)

    (see page 5) to choosing college or some other orm o education or training ater high

    school. Work with your parents, teachers, and counselors to make decisions, but remind

    everyone that it isyouruture at stake and thatyouare taking charge o it.

    Lets start with some basic steps you should taketo get organized, plan or the uture, and start on theroad to success.

    First, you need to fgure out some things about yoursel.This step can be as simple as writing down a list o your

    interests (like video games or rock climbing), yourhopes and dreams (like helping others), your talents(like writing or math ability), and your weaknesses (i

    youre squeamish at the sight o blood, or example, youmight not want to be a doctor).

    Follow up on this inormal exercise by taking some

    ormal assessments to determine your interests andabilities. Common assessments include the Kuder(www.kuder.com), Bridges (www.bridges.com), CareerCruising (www.careercruising.com ), COIN (www.coinedu.com), and Myers-Briggs (www.myersbriggs.

    eighth or ninth grade.

    Ask your principal or counselor about the careerassessments available at your school.

    Research Your Career Options

    Once youve learned about yoursel, learn moreabout your career options. There are thousands o

    occupations out there o which you may never haveheard, and others that do not yet exist because thetechnologies have not been developed. Fortunately,there are plenty o resources (see inside back cover) or

    you, and they are as close as the nearest computer.One o the most helpul is the Occupation and Skill

    Computer-Assisted Researcher (or OSCAR, or short)

    rom the Texas Workorce Commission. It is a vastdatabase o inormation about hundreds o proessions.You can fnd OSCAR at www.ioscar.org/tx. Anothergood place to start is O*NET (www.onetcenter.org).

    Gather inormation about what you can earn in thecareers in which you are interested. Find out whetherthe careers you are considering have a promisingutureare they adding or losing jobs? Check out the

    education youll need to enter those careers.The chart on pages 1011 presents data on 25

    possible proessions. Remember, though, that these arejust a sampling o careers available in the cluster. Goto OSCAR, O*NET, or another resource to investigate

    other careers.

    Create Your TAP

    Once you have a better idea o your interests andabilities, you are ready to plan or high school andbeyond. The Texas Achievement Plan, or TAP, is yourplan or preparing or the career o your choice.

    First students choose a cluster, not a particularoccupational goal. In the eighth grade a student mightchoose Finance and then later become interested in anarrower feld such as actuary or loan ofcer.

    The program o study you chooseyour plandoesnot stop with graduation rom high school. A student

    could then pursue a Bachelors degree as a credit analyst

    or a graduate degree as a economist.You should set up a TAP that takes you through career

    preparation after high school, revising your blueprintas needed as you go along. If your career plans includecollege study, ask your counselor about tests required foradmission to college, such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.

    Seek Out Special Programs

    Many Texas schools oer innovative programs toprepare students or specifc career areas. These includecareer and technical education (CTE) programs,academies, and magnet schools. Once youve decidedon a career direction, ask your counselor about special

    programs in your area that may provide relatedexperiences in your chosen career.

    Samuel Odamah enrolled in the architectureprogram at the University o Texas at Arlington,having ound his career calling at Dallass SkylineCareer Development Center, a high school with careerprograms in a number o dierent felds.

    Skyline is one o the ew schools in the country that

    oer programs in architecture, Odamah says. In somecareers, Skyline students could even get proessionalcertifcations or licenses right in high school. It was agreat place because you could fnd out whether youreally wanted to enter a career.

    Odamah says that the career cluster system atSkyline taught him the value o planning or hiscareer and his lie. We learned about planning ahead,

    he says. Those who plan things ahead o time donthave to catch up. Its just a matter o what a personwants out o lie. Planning gives you a better platormor success.

    Dont get locked into a cluster and programo study you dont like. You should reexamine

    your education is going and why, your classeswill become more meaningul. Youll make

    ATAP is a Texas Achievement Plan, and its a smartidea to create one to guide your studies throughhigh school and into college or other postsecondary

    education or training. Your TAP represents your chanceto take control o your education and career choices.

    Working with your parents/guardians and guidancecounselor, you can pick the cluster on which youwant to ocus your studies as well as your career and

    That may not necessarily be true, sinceit usually reers to the bank owner, notthe teller, says Alexander May, directoro nancial reporting/gas operations orCenterPoint Energy o Houston. But I cantell you that there has never been a better

    time to be in nance and accounting.Because o all the government scrutiny todo with nancial mismanagement o largecompanies, people in this proession are inhigh demand to ensure the controls are inplace or proper nancial management.

    When it comes to job opportunities,Finance is a high-growth cluster. Accordingto the U.S. Bureau o Labor Statistics,964,000 new jobs will be created in theindustry nationally between 2006 and 2016.The Texas Workorce Commission saysthat in Texas alone, positions or nancial

    managers and analysts, accountants, andauditors will increase almost 20 percentin that same 10-year period. Positions or

    compensation and benets specialists areexpected to increase more than 30 percent.Why the boom?

    Every single company needs anaccountant, says Holly Sparkman, chienancial ocer or Cedra Corporation, a

    biotechnology company in Austin. Thatbroadens opportunities, because employeescan work or any company size in anyindustry. Personally, Ive worked in everysize company rom small, privately held

    Although not everyone in Finance can become the chie fnancialofcer (CFO) or a major corporation, proessionals in the cluster are

    well paid, depending on the career choice and industry.According to the Texas Workorce Commission, fnancial

    managers starting salaries in Texas are more than $63,313 and rise ashigh as $136,662, with the average being $112,206 across all industrysegments. Wages or actuaries are even better, averaging $103,739 andtopping out at about $127,633. Financial analysts highest salaries arealso excellent, at approximately $93,361, with the average salary being$77,826. On the other hand, loan counselors wages are signifcantly

    lower, averaging $37,698, as are those o claims adjusters, examiners,

    and investigators, who average $55,619.

    Good Education

    Careers with higher salaries generally require more education.Typically, companies want to hire someone with at least our

    years o college, says Deborah Ropelewski, director o education or

    the Proessional Liability Underwriting Society, a national nonproftorganization that supports career development in liability insurance.They want people who are serious about continuing their education,especially those interested in becoming proessional brokers orinsurance agents, who need to meet continued education requirementsto maintain their licenses.

    We look or graduates with fnance and accounting degrees, says

    CenterPoints May. We require people to be trained in a certain wayo thinking, and we want them to learn it in college, because there areso many other skills that they need to learn once theyre on the job.

    May concurs. Finance and accounting are the basis o a companyssuccess, he says. While the company may make a great product thatsells very well, there has to be someone who can keep the pennies inthe bank.

    Variety on the Job

    Some students think theyll have to sit at a desk working withnumbers all day, says Alison Benton, principal and director inHouston at UHY Advisors, a national tax and business consultantfrm. But theres more variety in this feld than I ever thoughtwork most people would never consider as Finance.

    In her position, Benton negotiates deals or companies. For

    instance, i a company is expanding, she says, I might help themget government unding or training or a new acility. This lets meuse my legal experience rom business law classes and my humancommunications skills in addition to fnance experience. Bentonsuggests students consider combining their personal interests withfnance skills to fnd a good career ft.

    Finance oers some unusual choices. Careers students may

    not know about include oreign exchange dealer, debt settlementnegotiator, personal shopper, and orensic litigator.

    Forensic litigation has taken o in the last three years, Bentonexplains. This is where people investigate fnancial raud andtrack down undercover computer transactions when someone hasbeen unneling unds to accounts overseas. Thats a very cool job

    Imagine walking up to a Texas state legislatorand telling him or her to rewrite a bill. Well,thats not exactlywhat John Heleman does in

    his job as chie revenue estimator or the TexasComptrollers Ocethe states bookkeeperand tax collectorbut its pretty close.

    Sometimes a legislator authors a piece olegislation that would cost the State moneywhen he or she didnt mean to, saysHeleman. In cases where it is unclear, I

    visit the legislator to determine i that isintentional. I the legislator does not

    intend to incur the costs in the bill,I let him or her know that he orshe may need to restate portions

    o the document to eliminate theexcessive spending.

    Dealing with legislators isjust one part o Helemans job.

    Understanding Texas law and

    protecting the States bank accountis his major responsibility.

    While I spend time crunchingnumbers, I also spend a lot o time atthe Capitol, meeting with legislatorsand their stas, he says. As a stateemployee, Im not allowed to avorone bill or another, however. Im

    there as a resource, to explain the technicaldetails o a given bill and possible nancialconsequences.

    Heleman has reached one o the top position

    in Finance, but his daily duties working withboth numbers and people are typical o those aevery level o job responsibilities in the cluster.

    There are two acets to my job, explainsCharles Tuggle, who works as a nancialassociate with a major national brokeragerm in Houston. I have analytical skills orunderstanding securities and how they work,but rst and oremost, this is a sales job. I

    have to convince people that, rst, they needto invest or the uture and, second, that theyneed to invest with us.

    As part o the sales process, Tuggle makes

    telephone calls, attends networking eventsand seminars, and registers a lot o ace-to-ace time. In addition, he spends many hours

    doing paperwork, because Finance is a highlyregulated industry.

    Theres also customer service work to bedone, such as maintaining accounts, reportinggains and losses or taxes, and recommendingchanges to nancial portolios so that hisclients investments remain as sound aspossible. New clients rarely come through the

    door seeking a broker, so sales is a primaryskill in Tuggles Finance career.

    Part o being a good salesperson is caringabout clients. For Tuggle, that means

    helping people save or retirement and otherimportant lie events.

    For example, a riend o mine once calledme or help because she needed to nance hersons education, he says. She had some moneysaved, but could see it wouldnt go very ar.Tuggle worked with her, explaining dierent

    saving and investment options until theyagreed on a plan that she could aord. Based

    on what we did, this plan should pay or ouryears at a private college, assuming he keeps hisgrades up and keeps getting scholarships.

    Whereas Tuggle generally works with

    older people, April Howe, branch manager

    o Associated Credit Union in Clear Lake,generally serves a younger clientele.

    I run a small branch located inside agrocery store, says Howe. My sta and Iprovide loans or customers high school ageand up. One o my avorite parts o the jobis lending, especially to young people,because I can help them start buildingtheir credit without requiring their parents

    to co-sign a loan.Howe has been involved with helping

    young people learn about saving and creditand other nancial matters or years.

    I helped open the rst credit union in ahigh school in Texas and had theopportunity to train students to run it,she says proudly. Many o the students

    have pursued careers in the nanceindustry. Some even stayed with thecredit union and advanced.

    So what is a typical day at her creditunion branch?

    Its always busy, she says. People arestanding in line, the ax machine is busy, andthe phone is ringing. And I couldnt love itany more. I enjoy the pressure.

A stock tickerstreams an endless series o numbers on atelevision overhead, tracing the upward ordownward movement o the days most activestocks on the New York Stock Exchange.

    An increasing number o Texas highschools are bringing the world o Finance

    into the classroom. Students get a taste owhat that business world is likeand theskills needed to succeed.

    A prime example is the Virtual Financecourse Cecilia Santos teaches at John B.Alexander. Its an innovative class open to

    juniors and seniors rom all our high schoolsin our district, she explains. Students learn

    about banking and investingthe history omoney, the role o the Federal Reserve Bank,and annual reports.

    The centerpiece o the course, though,is the Stock Market Game, a programsponsored by the Foundation or InvestorEducation (see Virtual Finance at right).

    The game simulates an online investmentaccount, teaching students the basics o

    investing by asking them to put virtualdollars into real stocks, and to ollow theirprogress. At the end o the course, thestudents prepare a PowerPoint presentation,a report, and present to a panel obusinesspeople rom the local communitybankers, accountants, stockbrokersand deend their investment strategies,

    What skills are needed to pursue aFinance-related career? Start with a strongoundation in English and math.

    While working at a public corporation,I saw that good writing skills were essential,especially i you wanted a promotionto upper management, Sanders says.

    Furthermore, rom a nance standpoint,mathematics is essential. Employees needto be able to interpret and analyze, to

    understand the numbers and explain them,to project and estimateall the skillsnecessary or higher-level thinking.

    I recommend taking accounting, she

    says. Its oten oered or dual credit inhigh school, so students can get a college-level experience. I also recommendeconomics, which is oered or dualcredit in various places, and a bankingcourse. Thats so students get a generalunderstanding o the nancial eld.

    manager and assistant vice presidentor Amegy Bank in Houston, also stressesthe need to master the math used in thebusiness world.

    In nance, employees need to have agood grasp o numbers, she says. Studentsneed about 12 hours o accounting. Its very

    competitive nowor entry-level positions,employers require a good background inaccounting. Employees need to be able tounderstand a balance sheet, so that theyre

    able to talk to clients.

    o Central Texas. We do the best wecan to match everybody with the kind oproessional he or she wants to job shadow.One group o students wanted to see a

    Armstrong Foundation; another group ostudents went to Whole Foods.

    Guerrero is involved in organizingGroundhog Job Shadow Day every Februaryor Junior Achievement. She helps studentsexperience lie in the world o Finance byollowing proessionals at work. More than100,000 businesses and a million studentsnationwide participate. Guerrero makes sure

    the students make the most o the event.

    An in-school curriculum that happensbeore the event gives students backgroundinormation on job skills they have andcareers theyre interesting in seeking,Guerrero says. Students create a resumeand research dierent careers.

    Job shadowing is just one type o extendedlearning experience that takes place outsidethe classroom. As the name implies,students spend a day shadowing someoneemployed in business, asking questions,

    and observing whats involved in a typicalday at work.

    The proessionals that students shadow

    talk about what they do, but they also givestudents advice and tips on how to developtheir skills and the education to seek, saysGuerrero. They will show students projects

    theyve done in the past and review thestudents resumes. Its a good opportunity ostudents to connect learning with earning, tond out what education they need to pursuea particular career eld.

    not doing. They learn a lot in a short time, butthey dont have any job responsibilities. Another

    The biggest springboard to the real worldavailable to high school students is thecooperative, or co-op, class.

    Juniors and seniors in cooperative educationprograms split their days between the classroomand a job. Students are matched with communitypartners, businesses that have a history o

    sponsoring students, says Christopher Cashin,who teaches in Houston at John H. ReaganHigh Schools business academy. The studentsgo to work, just like a regular job, typically in thelatter part o the day. Theyll go to class rom,say, 8:30 in the morning until noon, and thentheyll go to a paid job, and theyll earn high

    school credit.

    Teachers go to the job sites and make sure thestudents are reporting to work, and check on thequality and progress o their work experience,Cashin says.

    It doesnt hurt or students to earn paycheckswhile still in school, but the experience they earn

    is worth a lot more in years to come. Studentsget a paycheck, but more important than that,

    they acquire real-lie experience, says Cashin.Some o the co-op students have gone onto intern while theyre in college, and attainproessional careers with these companies.

    Matthew tells a similar story. The Dallas

    nance academy has placed co-op students atDeloitte & Touche, one o the worlds largestbusiness consulting rms.

    A career portolio is not simplya resume, although it can certainlyinclude one. So what should go in acareer portolio? A variety o things,

    depending on your own personalexperiences. It could include transcriptsand grades; writing samples; letterso recommendation rom teachers,mentors, or employers; awards youvereceived; and items that documentother activities, such as internships and

    job shadowing experiences.

    ranging rom short on-the-job-trainingto graduate studies at a university, can

    put students on the right path torewarding utures.

    There are many ways to get started in thebusiness world, and not all require a collegedegree. Smiths college, or instance, oers atraining course or bank tellers that requiresseven weeks o classroom instruction,ollowed by a paid internship at an areabank. I I had 100 teller graduates, I could

    place them tomorrow, Smith says.Although teller salaries generally are low,

    its a good way to begin a career in Finance.I employees start as a teller and work their

    way up, in ve years, i theyre not a branchmanager, theyre doing something wrongand that position starts at about $50,000 a

    Some o these programs lead directly tojobs, but keep in mind that most proessionsrequire our-year degrees. In accountancy,or instance, we oer the 10 classes theState Board o Public Accountancy requiresor people to sit or the certied public

    accountant exam, but the person must havealready gotten a bachelors degree, says JoeCahill, chair o the business department atTomball College.

    Many two-year programs at communitycolleges eed directly into a our-year

    program at a university, through coursetransers or 2 + 2 agreements. Theseagreements are money-savers, sincecommunity colleges generally have muchlower tuition rates than universities. Sincethe state has more community colleges thanuniversities, a 2+2 option may allow students

    to live at home their rst two years.In some cases, these agreements

    even allow a student to earn a our-year university degree at a community
