Dear Friends, Typhoon Mangkhut struck the Philippines, bringing with it ferocious gale-force winds and pounding rains. Information coming through from the affected areas has been limited, and the full scope of the damage is still unknown. There will be much work in the days and weeks to come providing emergency assistance to families who have lost their homes and their livelihoods. We ask that your congregation would remember families in the Philippines and others affected by Typhoon Mangkhut in prayer. Please pray: For the families who have seen their homes destroyed and are now faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives. For our ecumenical partners and other organisations who are bringing aid to people and communities affected by the Typhoon. For the churches and religious leaders that they may be pillars of strength for their communities. We are working with our partners on the ground to monitor the situation and are preparing to help deliver essential food, water and shelter to those affected, and are liaising with fellow members of the Church Agencies Network Dis-aster Operations (CAN DO) to coordinate our response. Thank you again for all you do to support communities affected by conflict and disaster around the world. With blessings and gratitude, Yvette Crafti Disaster and Emergencies Program Coordinator Act for Peace

Elders at St Matthew’s Uniting Church Baulkham Hills
On the 18th November, St. Matthew’s will be holding an election of Elders. You may vote from Wednesday 24 October, if you won’t be at church on the Sunday. We believe that everyone within our Church community has an important role to play in preparing to elect Elders. We invite you to spend a few minutes reading this information. Its purpose is to enable you to understand the process of electing Elders, and how best you can fulfil your important role.
Background and Structure At present we have 28 Elders. The term of office for an Elder is normally 3 years. The Elders of St. Matthew’s Uniting Church share with the Ministry Team in the spiritual oversight of the congregation. “Together they are responsible for building up the congregation in faith and love, sustaining its members in hope, and leading them into a fuller participation in Christ’s mission in the world” (Basis of Union). The Elders are a team. Each Elder brings his/her particular gifts and insights. Elders have different amounts of time to give to being an Elder. Together with the Ministry Team, Elders have a shared ministry. The following elders come to the end of their term of office and we express our sincere thanks to them for their ministry during this time:
Sandra Drayton, Kathy Lewis, Sandra Gordon, George Haines, Christine Haines, Jeff Cuff, Bruce Rowe, Charmaine Rowe, Anne Oliver, Mario Nicolas, Earl Gray, Margaret Gray, Yee Cheng Eldridge, Ron McIntosh, Erin Mathewson. These elders are eligible for re-nomination.
The following are CURRENT elders whose term concludes in November 2019 (They cannot be nominated this year):
Helen Olley, Melissa Gibson Darling, Rosemary Sexton, Janice Caldwell, Eulalie Herat, Ken Caldwell, Pamela Leslie, David Sieber, Katherine Pedersen,
Robyn Mathewson, Michael Hill, Jane Cole, Daniel Gibb.
Currently, the elders meet once a month (except for January and July).
Duties and Responsibilities of Elders “The ministry of Elder is one of spiritual oversight, and may also be exercised in pastoral visitation, teaching, encouraging members of the Congregation to share in mission, and assisting the Minister in leadership of worship and administration of the sacraments and other
areas in the life of the Congregation” (Regulations 3.1.10a).
Nominating someone to be an Elder
We ask you to pray about the people whom you know, and consider who among them would make excellent Elders. We encourage you to nominate those people. From the 7th October, nomination forms will be available. You will need to find someone else from the church to sign the nomination form with you. It is also important that you do not speak to the people you are nominating. Please do not ask them whether or not they wish to be nominated. Please hand nomination forms directly to me, or leave them for me in the Church office. You may nominate as many people as you wish. Nominations close on the 28th October.
The next step After nominations close those who have been nominated will be contacted. They will not know who nominated them, or how many times they have been nominated. An additional hand-out will be available for people who have been nominated to assist in deciding whether or not to accept the nomination, and an information session will occur on Sunday 11th November.
Electing Elders The election of elders from those who accept nomination will take place by written ballot at worship services on Sunday 18th November. We would encourage you to attend, and participate in the ballot. For further information please speak with me or other elders.

New contributors welcome ! Hello everyone,
It has been exciting finally
being able to recommend and
promote our new giving option
‘Pushpay’ and see the start of
the take up of this option.
When I say ‘start’, it will take
some time to get the information
to all those who give and would
like to give to St. Matthew’s.
Your church council have
selected this provider in order
to make available a credit card
based giving option. Pushpay
as a company started in New
Zealand but now have a head
office in the US - servicing
non-profit organisations (not
just churches) in several
countries including Australia.
Why do we need another
giving option?
There are many new families,
couples and individuals that
have joined St. Matthew’s
community and your church
council invites you all to
consider a regular offering as part
of your belonging to St. Matthew’s
– whatever is your level of
involvement – regular or
occasional worshipper, or a
member of one of the small
groups or maybe even a
connection with our youth
ministries, pre school, play
groups or seniors ministry.
The Pushpay system works
basically from your mobile
phone. The setup instructions
are in the weekly newssheet,
in summary, get ready to
send a text message to this
number 0488 202202. The
message is these 4 letters
‘SMBH’. An immediate reply
will be received with a web
link to our own giving page –
the ‘purple page’. Your credit
card details are entered and
stored on your account, also
your email address for sending
receipts.
Your details are entirely
private, no person at St. Matthew’s
can access your credit card or
personal details.
What if you currently give via
a direct debit? It’s fine to
leave your direct debit as is,
however you may be like me,
I’ve been meaning to vary it
up a bit but somehow don’t
get around to it. I have now
decided to cancel it in favour
of Pushpay, whereby I can
increase or reduce at any time.
Pushpay asks for a ‘one time’
gift or a ‘recurring’ gift and
you choose the frequency of
that – every week, every
month or other options. Great
– how easy is that, just keep
your credit card details up to
date such as the expiry date,
etc. You can also utilise a
debit style card that accesses
savings but processes through
the Mastercard or Visa card
systems.
It is not possible to setup
normal savings or cheque
accounts.
If you prefer to use your home
or work PC, you can access the
purple page from St. Matthew’s
website – look on the right
hand side – the ‘Giving online’
menu button.
Next month in Focus: we will
provide more information on
how St. Matthew’s utilises the
offerings received, I’m sure
you can all appreciate the
issue of rising expenses – both
staffing costs and general
property expenses.
Thank you for your attention
and your willingness
to give to St.
Matthew’s.
