Dear Friends,

The next time you’re in a room filled with people, look around. Whether they’re friends, coworkers or strangers, many of these people have Red Cross stories to tell.

Maybe they gave blood or took a CPR class last year. Or perhaps the Red Cross taught them to swim when they were kids. You might be surprised how many people have had fires in their homes and remember that the Red Cross was there for them with blankets, coffee and compassion. If you look closely, you can see the Red Cross everywhere. Your support of the Greater Chicago Chapter is reaching more and more people each year.

Our mission is to help people prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. Our chapter serves more than 8.6 million people in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties. As the leader of our regional Red Cross grouping, we strengthen service to a total of 12 counties in Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Your support makes these communities safer, stronger and better prepared for emergencies.

During many moments of our lives, we’re in the company of strangers: at the grocery store, in line at the movie theater, or even watching our children play at the park. As Red Cross volunteers and donors, however, we work to create a network of safety in our communities. In times of crisis, people whom you might think of as strangers can emerge as everyday Red Cross heroes. They’re the people who know CPR, give blood and carry preparedness kits in their cars. They are volunteers, course instructors and prepared citizens.

Your support helps us to grow this network of safety. Thank you for your generous gift to the Red Cross. Share your Red Cross story with the people in your life, and encourage them to write their own by becoming a part of our Red Cross community.

Sincerely,

Francesca M. Maher Kary McIllwainChief Executive Officer Board Chair

By giving to the Red Cross last year, you’ve reached into places where people are

struggling to take control of their own recovery, and you’ve given them hope. Over

the summer, your support helped give a mother and her daughter a safe place to

sleep after a fire had destroyed their home.

In the soft light of a hospital room, cartoons chattered from the TV, and a mother

with tired eyes encouraged her daughter to eat her lunch. The night before, they had

choked their way through thick smoke as their apartment went up in flames. For the

moment, the mother could only focus on one task—getting her little girl to eat chicken

fingers.

As our mental health volunteer interviewed her, the mother told us that they’d lost

everything in the fire. They left in a hurry— “I didn’t even have time to find my purse,”

she said. Our volunteer explained that the Red Cross could give her immediate relief

so she would have a place to stay, food and a change of clothes.

At first, the mother was skeptical. “Is this a loan?” she asked.

“No,” our volunteer explained. “It’s a gift.”

As this sank in, tension faded from her face, and she started to

smile. She began thanking us and making jokes. Then, for the

first time all morning, her daughter smiled.

When you support the Red Cross, you’re giving people hope

in places where no one else is offering it. You’re in the unique

Preparing People to be Everyday Heroes

Roads were crusted with salt and lined with snow on a bright day in March when

hundreds of people braved the weather to spend their Saturday at our chapter’s

annual CPR Training Days. They registered, paid the discounted $5 class fee

and learned how to save a life.

On the bottom row of the bleachers, a mother and her grown daughter, still in their

coats, were thawing out as they leafed intently through the Red Cross course materials.

They were taking the class so they would know exactly what to do in an emergency.

“I take care of my grandkids, and I wanted to know what to do if they got sick.”

Young couples, college roommates and entire families filtered down onto the gym floor.

They gathered around the CPR manikins, which were lined up neatly in rows. People

chatted and were cheerful, practicing rescue breathing and chest compressions. In the

back of everyone’s mind was the fact that these manikins were there to represent real

people. They were practicing for the people who might one day need their help.

By supporting the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, you help

Beginning in Your Backyard, Reaching Around the World

In a hot basement apartment on the North side of Chicago, a father and his two sons

gathered with a Red Cross international tracing worker to tell their story. She listened

intently. She had worked hard to find this family and to hand-deliver a Red Cross

message to their door.

Refugees from Tanzania, the man and his family had only been in the United States a

short while. His two young boys were quiet until spoken to, and then their faces lit up

as they chatted about school. “Here, we are free,” the father said. “I am so glad we are

here.” In his hand, the man held the Red Cross message from his cousin—evidence

that the family he left behind is safe and well.

The Red Cross has the unique opportunity to connect families who may otherwise

have no ability to find each other. There was no postal service in his cousin’s refugee

camp. Instead, the message was guided through many hands, over the ocean and onto

the desk of this tracing worker in Chicago. She had the dedication and persistence to

search for this family and, eventually, to find them.

Tracing is just one of the chapter’s international programs that gives

local activists and donors a way to change lives on the other side of

the globe. Our chapter encourages people to consider the power of

$1—the cost of a measles vaccine that will save a child’s life. When

military families are apart during times of service, the Red Cross has

the unique ability to reach members of the military—no matter where

they are—to bring news from home. Knowing that we’re there to share

messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives messages about births, illness, death and other important news gives

Blood Donation is a Simple, Priceless Act

“I give blood because I can and because I hope other people would do the same for me.” —Darlene Chrusciel-Kokotan, a recent blood donor. Darlene gave at work, and was inspired by her father, who was a regular donor.

By donating at a local drive you’re giving enough blood to save three lives.

Coworkers chatted, laughed and ate cookies while others filled out forms and waited

their turn. At our chapter’s Rauner Center this August, dozens of people gave up an

hour of their day to give a pint of blood. They were there for different reasons—some

were longtime donors, others were spontaneously inspired by a flyer that had asked

them to give.

Each person in the room that day was motivated by the fact that giving blood is giving

life. They were there to help others—people they would never meet, but who needed

their help. Blood donors give because they believe that this simple, small act is the

right thing to do.

The act of giving blood can change a family’s life forever. After a mother gave birth

this summer, the Red Cross was there to help her and her new baby. The infant

needed a transfusion of blood platelets, and the mother was the only suitable donor.

Many Red Cross staff members worked quickly to draw and process the mother’s

donation, some even coming in on their day off to make sure

everything went smoothly.

By donating regularly, people around you are making sure that this

lifesaving resource is shared. Because of their generosity, and because

of yours, the American Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation’s

blood supply. Our volunteers organize Red Cross blood drives in their

schools, community centers and at work because they know that they’re

creating an important link between our generous blood donors and

people who need their help the most.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion.

Choosing the Red Cross, Choosing to Give

You’ve met people who give to the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, but you

might not realize who they are. They are the mother of five who gives loyally to our

annual fund, and a 10-year-old girl who organized a fundraiser with her Red Cross

Club. They are international travelers passing through O’Hare airport who choose

to donate leftover currency into cans marked for the Red Cross. They are the people

who live on a fixed income into their retirement, but who leave a legacy by naming

our chapter in their wills and trusts. No matter when they give, or how they give,

people share a belief in our mission, and every day they are choosing to give.

Some of them give out of love for another. A young woman ran the Chicago Marathon

this year in honor of her father, who’s struggling to cope with illness. She chose to join

our chapter’s Run Red Team, a group that fundraises for our chapter while training

for the marathon. Years ago, this runner’s father was serving in the armed forces in

Vietnam, and the Red Cross helped to bring him home to attend a loved one’s funeral.

He always remembered that experience, and he went on to become a firefighter and

lifelong fan of the Red Cross. “The Red Cross was there for my father,

and now I want to make him proud.”

Others give so that our community can be better prepared. A real

estate agent in the city of Chicago saw a man collapse on a crowded

train and watched helplessly when no one knew how to perform

CPR. He immediately decided to take a CPR class, but that didn’t CPR. He immediately decided to take a CPR class, but that didn’t CPR. He immediately decided to take a CPR class, but that didn’t CPR. He immediately decided to take a CPR class, but that didn’t

in many forms and in creative ways, by other donors who share in many forms and in creative ways, by other donors who share in many forms and in creative ways, by other donors who share in many forms and in creative ways, by other donors who share

Governor’s Circle ($500,000 - $999,999) The American Red Cross’ top leadership is the national Board of Governors, composed of business and civic leaders from across the nation who volunteer their time in service to the Red Cross.

President’s Circle ($250,000 - $499,999) Clara Barton was the first President of the American Red Cross. Another notable past president is General George C. Marshall, after whom the Marshall Plan is named.

Circle of Humanitarians ($50,000 - $149,999) Humanitarianism is one of the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement and a value exemplified by our volunteers and donors on a daily basis.

Taft Circle ($25,000 - $49,999) United States President William Howard Taft was not only a U.S. President and Chief Justice, but also served as President of the Board of the Red Cross from 1906 to 1913 and as Chairman from 1915 to 1919.

Commodore Longfellow Circle ($10,000 - $24,999) Commodore Wilbert E. Longfellow served the Red Cross from 1914 through 1947 and was responsible for the founding of the Red Cross Life Saving Corps, a predecessor of today’s water safety program.
