HISTORY OF THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF ABA. At the creation of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia (Mater Dei Cathedral) on June 23rd, 1958, it was made up of three Districts of Bende, Aba and Okigwe. Those Districts were, in ecclesiastical circles referred to, and known as Zones. Aba Zone was the second in numerical strength among the three Zones, while Okigwe was the first. Aba was, and still is, the biggest commercial centre of the three. The Diocese of Okigwe was excised from the Diocese of Umuahia on March 29, 1981, with His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Dr Anthony Ilonu as its Bishop. Nine years later, the Diocese of Aba was born. What used to be known as Aba Zone was excised from the Diocese of Umuahia on April 2nd, 1990. The first Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Vincent Valentine Egwuchukwu Ezeonyia, CSSp, was elected Bishop on April 25, 1990. His Episcopal ordination was on July 1st, 1990, and his installation as the first Catholic Bishop of Aba was the following day, July 2nd, 1990, in the Christ the King Cathedral Church, Aba. This was a huge mile stone in the history of the Catholic Church in the former Aba Zone, now Catholic Dioceses of Aba (Christ the King Cathedral of Aba). Many became enchanted by the prospects and the possibilities the little town could offer, and they decided to settle permanently. Aba was developing. The growth of Aba as a township indirectly served the cause of Christ. It meant the growth of Catholicism.
The earliest Catholic Foundation centres were: (a) Umuko/Umunkpeyi, now Sacred Heart Parish, Umunkpeyi, Nvosi. In mid 1916, Rev. Fr. Liddane, CSSp began to pay visits to Umuko. He was coming from Emekuku, Owerri, working as a curate under Rev. Fr. Daniel Walsh, CSSp.(b) Towards the end of that same year, 1916, the Catholic Church came to Ohuru, the present St. Jude's Parish, Ohuru through Calabar.(c) In 1917, the Catholic Church came to Mbutu Ngwa and Aba, all through Emekuku.(d) In 1918, it reached Amairi, now Holy Family Parish, Amairi, through C.K.C., AbaAba as Headquarters:It was Rev. Fr. Liddane, CSSp who brought the Gospel message to Aba in 1917. In 1918, Rev. Fr. Herbert Whytte, CSSp became the first residential priest. He was succeeded by Rev. Fr. O. Sullivan, CSSp, who died suddenly in 1925. In 1925, the veteran missionary, Rev. Fr. Eugene Groetz, CSSp, was sent to Aba to take over the reins of the parish administration. The 'ubiquitous' and indefatigable Fr. Groetz had worked at Umuoji parish, with the following as his out-stations Nkpor, Ojoto, Abatete, Uke, Alo, Ideani, Orukwu, Nnewi, Nnobi and Awka-Etiti (1909-1920) and
in Ogoja area (1920-1925). His tenure as the parish priest of C. K.C and its environs, which lasted 23yrs (1925-1948), was a major landmark in the history of the Catholic Church in this part of Igboland. He built churches and schools. He touched the hearts of everyone he met. The Christ the King Parish under Fr. Groetz comprised Aba Urban, Ngwa hinterlands including Ntigha, Mbawsi, Oloko, and also Ukwa, the whole of Asa, Ndoki, and extended to Mmoghonta, Ikot Inyang, Ndiakata and some parts of Ikot Ekpene. It also extended to the Rivers from Etche clan to Port-Harcourt itself, which was carved out as a separate parish in the 1930s. Another major landmark in this area was the creation of the Mater Dei Diocese of Umuahia in 1959, with His Lordship, Most Rev. Anthony G. Nwedo, CSSp, as the Bishop. He was also a veteran missionary, a man of vision. His apostolic work and zeal gave impetus to the growth, flowering and maturation of the faith in the former Okigwe and Aba Zones. Growth as Diocese: The Catholic Diocese of Aba has recorded some striking progress since its inception in July, 1990. When His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr Valentine V. Ezeonyia, CSSp, began to pilot the administrative reins of the Catholic Diocese of Aba, there were only 24 Parishes, and there were only 33 Diocesan Priests. Now, happily enough, the number of parishes has risen to 58 and there are a number of parishes in-making. Also the number of priests has risen to 144 There are 17 religious working in the diocese. The diocese has a handsome number of her sons in the seminaries, and good number of her daughters in the convents. As the diocese focuses on deepening the faith, it also focuses on improving the lot of the masses. The Bishop has built many secondary schools and numerous primary schools. The diocese has one hospital, (St Joseph's Catholic Hospital, Ohabiam, Aba) and some Health Centres/Maternities. The diocese is committed to improving and developing her schools, the hospital and health centres so that they render the best of services to humanity.Challenges: Though the Church in Aba is growing, we must not lose sight of the onslaught of neo-paganism, occultism, Pentecostalism which feeds on ignorance, fundamentalism and superstition, and the geography of poverty. All these prevent the true faith from penetrating into our lives. The chief shepherd of the Diocese of Aba, Most Rev. Dr. Vincent V. Ezeonyia, CSSp, puts the matter poignantly after reflecting on the whole scenario. “The small boat of thought of many Christians has often remained agitated by the waves, tossed about from one extreme to the other, dictatorship of relativism has its grip on us. The Catholic Diocese of Aba is being strangulated by this because of its deep rootedness in a territory with a proliferation and/or rather very fast expansion of Pentecostal churches and doctrine, as well as in a land which constitutes an emblem of a great challenge posed by deep-seated paganism and traditional religiosity.” (introduction to the Synod Acta, Aba, 2000). It was this paternal concern that inspired the Local Ordinary to choose TRUE CHRISTIAN IDENTITY as the theme for the first Synod of the Diocese. Though we have done a great deal, we still have an up-hill task. The clergy and the laity must rise against these challenges. What is required of us is orthodoxy and holiness of life.

Local Government Area, Anambra State. He was ordained a priest on August 3, 1968. He is a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit ( Spiritans). He was elected Bishop on April 25,
1990. His Episcopal ordination was on July 1, 1990. He was installed the First Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Aba on July 2, 1990. His Motto is Servire in Laetitia ( To Serve with Joy).
