We will seek to provide reasonable accommodation for all persons with disabilities for this meeting. We request that you contact the Atascosa County Extension Service twelve days (12) prior to the event at (830) 769-3066 or as soon as possible to advise us of the auxiliary aid or service that you require. 4‐H is a “learn by doing” youth education program for children 9 to 19. It promotes positive values, social responsibility, and lifelong learning. An afϐiliated program, Clover Kids, is available in some areas for children 5 to 7 (K to 2). Through 4‐H and the opportunities it provides, 4‐H members have the ability to par‐ ticipate in many events and activities, as well as apply for schol‐ arships, travel the country, and meet new friends. What is 4HConnect? 4HConnect is a web‐based system used to enroll youth and accept applications for adults in the Texas 4‐H Youth Develop‐ ment Program. It is also the only system Atascosa 4‐H uses for registra‐ tion and keeping mailing list and contact information current. Please be sure to update it as needed. Once registered, you will receive the Atasco‐ sa 4‐H newsletter every month in the mail. How much does it cost? 4‐H has a participation costs of $20 (before No‐ vember 1st of each year) to $25 (November 1st and after) to join. Some projects might cost something to get started—like, if you want to do pho‐ tography, you’ll need a camera and money to get pictures developed. Reg‐ istered adult volunteers are charged $5.00 annually. What about your parents or guardians? The Texas 4‐H Youth Develop‐ ment Program relies heavily on volunteers to reach more youth, lead edu‐ cational programs, coordinate activities, and manage clubs and groups. There are several roles a volunteer can serve which work with personal and family schedules, areas of expertise, and amount of time a volunteer is willing to contribute. County Extension Agents provide support to vol‐ unteers through training, curriculum resources, and opportunities to be engaged as a volunteer. Your parents don’t have to become 4‐H lead‐ ers/volunteers when you join 4‐H, but there are lots of ways they can help. Adults should only register on 4‐H Connect when volunteering with‐ in the group in leadership positions and when planning to chaper‐ one/drive 4‐H youth (other than their own) to any event. 1003 Oak Street Jourdanton, TX 78026 (830) 769-3066 [email protected] atascosa.agrilife.org

"Livestock Judging" Now Offered as a Project!!”

- Dr. Chris Boleman

One project we have added to this year’s project list is “Livestock Judging.” This is a decision I have been kicking around for a couple of years and over the years, I have solicited feedback from several people. In mak-ing this decision, I considered the number of youth in-volved in this project and the amount of time they dedi-cate to it. Because "Livestock Judging" encompasses several different livestock projects, youth select individ-ual livestock projects and this has caused some confu-sion over the years. Therefore, we have added a pro-ject area entitled "Livestock Judging" for 2015-2016 to allow youth to select this pro-ject area.

The Atascosa 4-H Livestock Judging Group will begin practicing on Wednesday

September 23, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at Capital Farm Credit

in Jourdanton.

No turkey toms for 2016 youth market poultry shows ... Dear Atascosa County 4-H Turkey Project Participants, Due to the outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the Midwest United States in the spring of 2015, the supply of turkey poults for youth market poultry shows in Texas has been disrupted. Orders for tur-key poults through the Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M Uni-versity for delivery in November, 2015 for the 2016 major livestock shows and local and county shows ordering simultaneously will consist of hen poults only. Therefore, there will not be a turkey tom division at the 2016 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, or Rodeo Austin poultry shows. We have already informed the management of each show about the lack of turkey toms, and are working closely with them to ensure a market turkey division remains a part of each show. We apologize for not being able to supply turkey toms, but circum-stances beyond our control have led to this situation. We are thankful to our poultry industry partners for helping the youth livestock programs of Texas by providing turkey poults for many years, and we are appreciative of their continued support to provide us with turkey hens during this time of short supplies. Provided no additional outbreaks of avian influenza occur in the United States that would cause continued losses to the poultry industry, we hope things will return to normal for 2017. Since this news comes to us after many county agents and teachers have already submitted their turkey orders, we are willing to make changes to orders and process refunds for those wanting to reduce or cancel their orders. We ask for your patience as we work through this process.

The staff of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office– Atascosa County would like to sincerely apologize to Mrs. Bonner, Lytle 4-H Club Manager and All the wonderful 4-H Members in the group. We “Oops’ed” and omitted their banquet photo from the group photos (page 6) on the printed copy of the September 2015 newsletter. It was a most embarrassing oversight on our part. We hope you all know how much we value your involvement in our program. Again, our sincerest apologies!! We plan to put this page in the October issue of the 4-H newsletter.
