Dear All

It's a pleasure to introduce

A.T.E.'s cleantech solutions

to you! Since the last few

years, we've been hard at

work crafting products and

processes that impact the

air, water, energy, and

information spheres. The

articles in this newsletter

are put together to offer you

green choices that are eco-

friendly and also strengthen your bottom line, as all

our offerings are specially designed to have low life cycle

costs.

How and why did we go down this path? How did we

choose the businesses we are in? This is something I'm

often asked. Let me give you some answers…

There are many factors that led to our entry into

cleantech. First, the board of A.T.E. has always been

socially driven. We think it is a good idea to achieve

societal goals through business. Second, A.T.E. has also

always been environmentally conscious. Even in the

1970s we built effluent treatment plants for our own

facilities, even when there were no regulatory needs.

Third, I have always been passionate about

sustainability and wanted to get involved in socially

useful business, particularly as I am deeply concerned

that India is vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Fourth, we also saw a business opportunity in cleantech

that would also mesh well with our existing businesses.

We searched among many options and came up with a

lot of exciting opportunities. One was the idea of

designing and building effluent treatment plants. India

has very low water availability per capita and so this is a

business with real social utility. And everywhere in the

world we need to clean water properly before we

discharge it. Second, we realized that for machine

manufacturers with a large installed base, remote

monitoring could be a fantastic route to energy and

performance optimization. Again, as we are resource

constrained, resource saving is an important

consideration. Third, we thought that if we could offer

comfort air conditioning at an affordable lifecycle cost,

we could bring comfort to millions of people working in

factories and offices, which will also boost productivity –

but without the heavy power use of air conditioners,

which make up the fastest growing component of power

utilisation in the tropics. Fourth, we have developed in-

house static control, air cleaning, ink handling and heat

exchange products that enhance the efficiency of a

variety of processes. Finally, we've been exploring solar

thermal technologies, in which currently we are piloting

our products. These can save wood, and fossil fuels, and

hence are meaningful.

At A.T.E. our endeavor has been to provide original

technologies. We have set-up our own R&D to develop

our own products and processes. Today, we have our

own IP including several patents. For example, at the

heart of our comfort air conditioning products is our

patented dry air moist air (DAMA) heat exchanger

technology, which is now well proven with over 19 million

CFM installations covering more than 3.7 million sq. ft. all

over India. This works on 100% fresh air and provides

better conditions and indoor air quality for people

comfort, and processes. In wastewater treatment we

have a knowledge base from over 200 successful

installations in India and abroad. We have developed the

highly successful AAA (air floatation, anaerobic, aerobic)

process that enhances biological treatment efficiency

and minimizes sludge generation, as well as AVR

(anaerobic venturi reactor) based biomethanation plants

and can handle difficult to treat effluents. To further

extend our capabilities, we also partner with Huber of

Germany for special wastewater treatment projects.

Our M2M framework allows us to deploy customized

solutions to increase the OEE (overall equipment

efficiency) of boilers, chillers, compressors, power

plants, sugar mills, water and wastewater treatment

plants, printing presses, solar energy installations, etc.

In conclusion: more and more people are willing to invest

in technologies that are environment friendly.

Businesses also realize that an environment sensitive

approach appeals to many customers and stakeholders.

Government is too playing an important role by stricter

enforcement of environmental laws. A.T.E. and our

customers have already worked together in so many

cases where we have implemented green solutions that

also help the bottom line! I am sure the articles will give

you more ideas.

With best wishes,

Anuj Bhagwati

.

Driven by passion and commitment,

A.T.E. embarked on a long term plan

for its clean technology business in

2006 to provide innovative solutions

for sustainable development. It soon

built-up a range of solutions in the areas of air, water and

energy – the three critical components of sustainability.

Within a short span of time, A.T.E. has established itself

in these domains with differentiated technologies, thus

standing apart from other players in the field.

Here is an overview of A.T.E.'s clean technology

solutions:

Energy efficient comfort air conditioning

HMX, an A.T.E. business unit, designs and

manufactures unique, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly

products for space and process cooling for the industrial

and commercial sectors.

HMX's proprietary 'two

provides cooling at an

affordable lifecycle cost.

A.T.E.’s clean technology solutions

The first of the original products that HMX has introduced

is the HMX-Ambiator, with its patented dry air moist air

(DAMA) heat exchanger technology. It is a significant

upgrade over air-washer (single stage evaporative

cooling technology) in the sense that it either 'saves

power for the same cooling effect as an air-washer' or

'provides more cooling and comfort than an air-washer'.

Also with HMX-Ambiator, moisture addition in

conditioned space is less than 50% as that of air-

washers.

Recently we have launched a range of pre-cooled fresh

air units, the HMX PCU-F and HMX PCU-R. The HMX

PCU-F is designed to reduce air-conditioning

tonnage. It can be deployed either as a standalone unit

or in conjunction with a cooling coil to precool fresh air

most efficiently without an expensive and complicated

return air system. It is ideal for fresh air induction in

hotels, hospitals, auditoriums, malls, multiplexes,

commercial complexes, etc.

Energy is the third leg of the A.T.E.'s clean technology

platform. In a world that is dominated by energy derived

from fossil fuels, energy efficiency and renewable

energy are the key approaches to reduce our demand for

such carbon intensive fuels. A.T.E. started its exploration

of the renewable energy segment in 2008. Building on

the solid technical fundamentals the team has converted

ideas on paper to real prototypes that are undergoing

trials. This is one of the bolder experiments being

undertaken at A.T.E. to develop a completely new

technology platform in-house for a solution that can have

a big impact on reducing carbon emissions.

With its own R&D setup creating innovative

technologies, coupled with genuine passion and long

term commitment, A.T.E. is steadily gaining satisfied

customers with its cleantech products and projects, and

is gaining a reputation as an excellent partner for

profiting from green solutions.

HMX launches PCU-F and PCU-R for comfort air-conditioning

HMX has launched its range of high-efficiency,

environmentally-friendly, pre-cooled fresh air units, the

HMX PCU-F and HMX PCU-R, to satisfymfresh air

requirements for the industrial and commercial sectors.

HMX PCU-F

The standard HMX PCU-F consists of an air filter, our

patented dry air moist air (DAMA) heat exchanger, an

optional coil (direct expansion – DX or chiller water –

CHW), supply air fan and its motor. The unit is then

connected to ducts that supply the clean pre-cooled

fresh air to the air handling unit or directly to the

conditioned space. DAMA works on the principle of

indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) for sensible cooling of

the primary air using water. The primary air is cooled

without adding moisture to it and in the process the dry

bulb temperature and the enthalpy of the fresh air are

reduced substantially. This helps to reduce the total

tonnage (TR) requirement for the project, and saves

a large amount of energy that is otherwise required

to condition the ambient air. This machine is available

from 500 CFM to 20000 CFM in standard options, and

can also be customized to suit project requirements.

The objective of HMX PCU-F is to reduce compressor

load for once-through applications.

The HMX PCU-F is an excellent option where the entire

fresh air load is handled by the chiller or a DX system. In

these cases, the retrofitting of the existing fresh air

handling unit is also possible. The total cooling capacity

TR saved will vary from one location to another.

For example, in Pune, the savings in compressor

energy consumption is nearly 20% over the course

of a year!

The PCU-F can be used in various sectors like

pharmaceuticals, hospitals, hotels, theatres and even

applications such as process cooling or to retrofit the

existing fresh air unit. Here the air is passed only once

through the space due to which there is zero

contamination. Positive pressure is maintained inside

the room and hence, a separate exhaust system is not

required.

HMX PCU-R

The standard HMX PCU-R is normally a double-decker

arrangement consisting of an air filter, our patented dry

air moist air (DAMA) heat exchanger, a supply air fan and

it's motor in the upper deck. The lower deck comprises

an air filter, a return air fan and its motor, and a plenum.

Arrangement is made such that the cold return air, by

design available at room temperature of 24°C and 55±5

% RH, is used as secondary air for DAMA.

HMX PCU-R is available in sizes from 500 CFM to 6000

CFM.

The objective of PCU-R is to replace inefficient and

maintenance intensive energy recovery wheels, heat

pipes, air-to-air heat exchangers, etc. with a more

efficient and economical solution that is both reliable and

sustainable. The annual energy savings with the

PCU-R is substantially higher to the tune of 50–60%

as compared to the existing options for energy

recovery devices!

The PCU-R can be used for varied applications such as

pubs, shopping malls, IT industries, offices, commercial

complexes, etc., where pre cooled fresh air is needed

and return air is available. Here, a retrofit is not possible

and a separate exhaust system is required to carry the

return air to the PCU-R.

M2M-based remote monitoring of stack emission &

air quality

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has

made it mandatory for industries to display emission data

in the public domain, through a local electronic board &

also on the company’s website.

EcoAxis has developed a very cost effective remote

monitoring solution which helps industries comply with

the Pollution Control Board (PCB) norms by

continuously monitoring and displaying air quality

parameters.

The full solution comprises remote display of

parameters, including an interface with the PCB website,

as well as alerts to plant operators & managers in case

the set limits are breached. The solution provides data

transmission in compatible formats as prescribed by

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) as well as

individual state PCBs.

It also provides data access to PCB/company personnel

to view historic data (any time, any place) over an

internet connection using a secure username and

password. This data can be viewed in MS Excel, PDF,

tabular, and graphical formats. This solution has so far

been successfully implemented in multiple thermal

power plants, and EcoAxis will be shortly taking this

solution to steel & cement plants as well.

Anaerobic technology for efficient treatment of API effluent

The rapidly growing API (active pharma ingredients)

industry faces many challenges in treating their

wastewater. The wastewater from API units typically

contain variety of chemicals, many of which are also

known to be refractory (or difficult to biodegrade). Also

their product mix changes frequently, hence the

wastewater chemical characteristics also vary

significantly over the period. It has been a challenge to

the industry to ensure that the treated effluent not only

meets the norms, but also be suitable for recycle in

process and non-process uses.

Conventionally, aerobic biological processes have been

used along with physico chemical primary and/or tertiary

stage. There have been rare instances of use of

anaerobic treatment processes as a part of API

wastewater treatment process. However, many such

installations were having operational problems which led

Here, a retrofit is not possible

and a separate exhaust system is required to carry the

return air to the PCU-R.

Mahindra & Mahindra delighted with HMX Ambiator

HMX has successfully commissioned a 32,000 CFM

Ambiator at Mahindra & Mahindra, Nagpur in February,

2014. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is the largest tractor

manufacturer in the world (by volume). The

manufacturing plant on Hingana road, Nagpur, rolls out

90,000 tractors per year.

The factory management faced a lot of problems with the

40 TR chiller units on the tractor assembly shop floor

installed earlier. Though the system proved to be

adequate for cooling the machines, the air handling units

8

failed to provide comfort to the workers. Additionally, the

motors and blowers of the air washer systems at other

locations of the factory were susceptible to rusting.

That's when they decided to approach HMX. Based on

HMX's study of the plant layout and recommendation,

M&M decided to modify the existing ducting layout and

install a HMX Ambiator of 32,000 CFM. After

experiencing the excellent cooling effect provided by the

Ambiator, the management decided to put the 40 TR

chiller unit on standby. This has resulted in M&M

saving around 31 kW/hr by using the HMX Ambiator.

Hence, not only did M&M get excellent cooling, but it also

got a system that is energy efficient! This is the largest

blow through Ambiator installation in India.

The management is quite impressed with the HMX

Ambiators and has decided to replace two more

chiller units in the same factory, as the first Ambiator

far exceeded their expectations.
