OUR MISSION:The Intercollegiate Athletic Program at Franklin Pierce University aims to guide its students in the pursuit of knowledge and the development of character so that they may enhance the quality of their work and leisure, discover an underlying sense of self-worth and dedicate themselves to lives of informed service to others.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES: Theprogramsofferedwillfosterthedevelopmentofteamworkandcooperationaswellascompetitiveness,andpromotetheexpectationofgoodsportingbehaviorandethicalconductbothonandoffthefield.Thedepartmentiscommittedtoofferingprogramsthatreflectanon-goingcommitmenttogenderequityanddiversity,andareconductedinharmonywiththeeducationalpurposesoftheinstitution.Theintercollegiatecoacheswillrecruittalentedstudent-athleteswhoarerepresentativeofthestudentbody,andwillchallengethemtoexcelinahighlycompetitivenationalacademicandathleticenvironment.Thedepartmentisalsocommittedtoprovidingactivitiestomeettheneedsofallstudentsandwillofferotherqualityprogramsinsub-varsityteams,intramuralclubs,recreationandwildernessprograms.ThedepartmentisfullycommittedtoNCAADivisionIIandNortheast-10Conferenceidealsandvalues.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENTS: Allfirst-yearstudentsmust registerwithandbecertifiedby theNCAAEligibilityCenter tobeeligible forcompetition.TheycanregisteronlineattheNCAAWebsitewww.eligibilitycenter.orgorgettheregistrationformsthroughtheirhighschoolguidanceoffice.ForDivisionII,astudent-athletemustattainaminimumcombinedscoreontheSATverbal/criticalreasoningandmathsectionof820,oraminimumsumscoreof68ontheACT.Theymustalsoachieveatleasta2.0coreGPAon14*corecourses.(*-Effectiveforstudentsbeginninginthefallof2013,theymusthave16corecourses)Nofirst-yearstudentmaycompetewithoutcertificationthroughtheEligibilityCenterforbothacademicsandamateurism.Studentsmustbeenrolledandremainenrolledinaminimumof12credithourspersemestertomaintaintheireligibility.

REGISTERING WITH THE ELIGIBILITY CENTERProspectivestudent-athletesmayregisterwiththeeligibilitycenterviatheInternetatthebeginningoftheirjunioryearinhighschool.Aspartoftheamateurismcertificationprocess,eachprospectwillbeaskedtoanswerseveralquestionsregardinghisorhersportsparticipationhistory.Earlyregistrationwiththeclearinghouseandthecompletionof theathleticsparticipationquestionswill allow institutions tohavepreliminary informationregarding a prospect’s amateurism status, which will promote consistency in the recruiting process. Finalcertificationsofamateurstatuswilloccurat theendof theprospectivestudent-athlete’ssenioryearofhighschoolorapproximately twoto threemonthsprior to initial full-timeenrollmentatanNCAADivision Ior IIinstitution.

AtFranklinPierce,we seeparticipationin intercollegiate sports as a wonderfulcomplement to an education. Our hopeis that it fostersgrowth, notonly in yourparticularsport,butalso inyourpersonaldevelopment. Lifelong lessions learnedthroughsportsinvolvementwillbenefityouwell beyond your years at theUniversity.Intercollegiate competition demands aseriouscommitment.Itrequireslonghoursofdedicationandperseverance.Itenablesindividuals towork together toachieveacommongoal. Our athletic department continued itsrun of success in 2008-09. Again, fourteams earned NCAA Tournament bids,highlighted by the women’s basketballteambecomingthefirstwomen’sprogramfrom the State of New Hampshire toadvance to the national championship inthat sport at any level of theNCAA -- agame that was nationally televised on

ESPN2. Men’s and women’s soccer, andbaseballallearnedNCAATournamentbidsaswell.ThreeteamscapturedNortheast-10championships and five other teams alsomadepost-seasonappearances. Whileouron-the-fieldaccomplishmentsareimpressive,Iamperhapsmostpleasedbyour185student-athleteswhoachieved3.0orhighergradepointaveragesduringthe fall of 2009. Nine (9) of those 185earnedperfect4.0GPAs.Thesuccessinthefallwasfollowedbyanoutstandingspringsemester which featured 130 student-athletesbeingnamedtotheNortheast-10Commissioner’sHonorRoll. We hope you find this publication verybeneficial as you come to learn moreabout Franklin Pierce. The“PiercePride”programwascreatedwithagoalofincreasingstudentattendance at home athletic events and creating a stronger Franklin

Piercecommunity.Variousmarketingandpromotional initiatives throughoutthe campus are targeted for this effort. TheWinchendon School Ice Arena: Located astate away, but just 15 minutes from campus,TheWinchendon School IceArena is home totheFranklinPierceUniversity icehockey team.Featuringnumerouslockerroomsandcoachingoffices,therinkiswell-equippedtoservebothasthehomeofTheWinchendonSchool’sboysandgirlshockeyprograms,inadditiontoitssecondarydutiesashomeof theRavens.Aheated lobbyareaandheaterspositionedoverthebleachersensurespectatorcomfortwhilestillmaintainingtheappropriatelyfrigidtemperaturesoftheicesurface.Priortothe2009-10campaign,FranklinPiercehockeyrenovatedits lockerroomatthearena,givingtheteamahome-iceadvantage.

Boathouse: Perched on the shores of PearlyPond, the Franklin Pierce Boathouse is hometo the University’s men’s and women’s rowingteams. In addition to housing the crew teams’boats, theboathouse is alsoprimarily usedbythe Campus Recreation Department, whichoffers kayaks, canoes and paddleboats foruseby the campus community throughout thefall and spring. Adjacent to the boathouse isLakeside Educational Center, which serves asa multi-functional area for the University, as ithostsclasses,meetingsandvariousothereventsthroughouttheacademicyear.

Softball Field: Located smack in the centerof campus, the softball field is much morethan just the home of Franklin Pierce’s varsitysoftballteam.Setwithapicturesquebackdropof Mount Monadnock, the field serves as acommunalgatheringplaceforthoseinsearchofoutdoor recreation as the snowmelts and thetemperaturesriseinthespring.Featuringlightsforactivitiesatanytimeofday,thefieldisalsoahubof theCampusRecreationDepartment’swildlysuccessfulintramuralprogram.

Dr. Arthur & Martha Pappas Field: Since itsopeningin2005,Dr.ArthurandMarthaPappasField has quickly become known as one ofthe premier college baseball facilities in thenortheast.Thesyntheticsurfaceallowsforplaythroughout the varying weather conditions ofspring in New England. Night baseball cameto Rindge in 2007 with the addition of lightstothecomplex,while2009renovationsaddedheat and lights to dugouts, as well as lightsto the bullpens and batting cage. The roadto the Division II NCAA Championship FinalsrunsstraightthroughRindge,asDr.ArthurandMarthaPappasFieldhashostedNCAARegionaltournaments in each of the last five seasons(2005-2009).

Grimshaw-GudewiczActivityCenter:Alsoknownas “The Bubble” on campus, the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Activity Center is the hub of theUniversity’shighlysuccessfulCampusRecreationprogram.TheCenterservesasarecreationareafortheentirecampuspopulation,aswellasbothaweight roomand inclement-weatherpracticefacility for Franklin Pierce’s intercollegiateathleticprograms.Covering72,000squarefeet

andstretchingsevenstoriestall,TheBubble ishometoacompletecardio/strengtharea,afreeweightarea,twofulltenniscourtsthatthetennisteams use throughout the entire year whenthey don’t play outdoors, two full basketball/volleyballcourts,a50-yardturffieldandatwo-lanetrack.

The Fieldhouse: The primary indoor venue oncampus, the Fieldhouse is home to FranklinPierce’smen’sandwomen’sbasketballprograms,as well as the volleyball team. In additionto its duties as a host of athletic events, theFieldhousealsohousestheUniversity’sAthleticsHallofFameandprovidesofficespaceforhalfoftheDepartmentofAthletics.TheFieldhouse’saptly-namedstudentsection,“TheCage,”putstheFranklinPiercefaithfulnearlyontopofthecourt, giving the Ravens an undoubted home-court advantage. As the primary locker roomfacility on campus, the Fieldhouse is alwayssure to be busy, whether in use by soccerteamspreppingforamatchatSodexoFieldorhosting a Northeast-10 Conference basketballdoubleheader.
