Sun 10 Feb 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Isaiah 6:1-8; Psalm 138; Luke 5:1-11 When we start to give, to share, to love one another, to discover ‘the other' outside our own private universe, to give concretely and simply, then something changes in us. We move closer to Jesus who dwells within us. Sat 9 Feb Liturgy of the Day Hebrews 13:15-17.20-21; Psalm 23; Mark 6:30-34 The gospels show us how many ordinary people are attracted to Jesus. Like the crowds who followed him, we are attracted to the way Jesus' presence has the power to transform ordinary people and the world. Fri 8 Feb (St Josephine Bakhita, V) Hebrews 13:1-8; Psalm 27; Mark 6:14-29 “If I were to meet the slave-traders who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and Religious today" – St Josephine Bakhita Thu 7 Feb Liturgy of the Day Hebrews 12:18-19.21-24; Psalm 48; Mark 6:7-13 Discipline is long-term thinking, yet it is deeply grounded in the present. Discipline without hope is cruelty. There must be a known incentive of future gain or discipline is punitive and senseless. Wed 6 Feb Ss Paul Miki & Companions, Ms Hebrews 12:4-7.11-15; Psalm 103; Mark 6:1-6 “Ask Christ to help you become happy… After Christ's example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as fruitful rain." – St Paul Miki (d. 1597) Tue 5 Feb St Agatha, VM Hebrews 12:1-4; Psalm 22; Mark 5:21-43 “Jesus Christ, Lord of all things! You see my heart, you know my desires. Possess all that I am – you alone. I am your sheep; make me worthy to overcome the devil." – St Agatha (d. 251) T he third chapter of Pope Francis’ Exhortation on Holiness (“Rejoice and be Glad”) is by far the most important. It is entitled “In the Light of the Master” and we will linger over this chapter for the next few weeks. Basically, chapter three deals with the Beatitudes. For Pope Francis the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12 and Luke 6:20- 23) “are like a Christian’s identity card”. They provide a profile of the life of Jesus himself and a portrait of what our lives, as disciples, should look like. They translate words like “holiness” and “perfection” into everyday realities. They are clear and simple but very challenging; indeed they turn many of our contemporary values upside down! The first beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”, praises that inner freedom which disciples of Jesus should have. Because we know our need of God, we put all our trust and hope in God, even while being bombarded with advice to trust this or that commodity. Francis concludes “Being poor of heart, that is holiness”. The second Beatitude, “Blessed are the Gentle”, also runs counter to the prevailing mood of aggression, self-promotion and conflict. Gospel gentleness is part of Christian humility and tolerance. St Thérèse of Lisieux summed it up when she said “perfect charity consists in putting up with others’ mistakes and not being scandalized by their faults”. The Pope’s way of putting it is “Reacting with gentleness and humility: that is holiness”. Much of contemporary society tries to ignore death, suffering and illness of any kind. The third Beatitude turns this trend upside down, even to the extent of calling ‘Blessed’ those who mourn. To “mourn in the Lord” is to face up to difficult situations – our own or those of others – and to bring Christian faith and hope to bear on whatever is causing distress. The risen Jesus invited Thomas to touch the wounds on his risen body; being a disciple means touching the wounds of those around us. “Knowing how to mourn with others: that is holiness”. “Justice” is one of those words that can be so general and vague that it drifts away from us too easily. When Jesus talks about the happiness of those who hunger and thirst for what is right he seems to have in mind justice for those who are most vulnerable: not the politics of self-interest or self-advancement. Pope Francis states “True justice comes about in people’s lives when they themselves are just in their decisions... justice for the poor and the weak… faithfulness to God’s will in every aspect of our lives”. He translates this beatitude: “Hungering and thirsting for righteousness: that is holiness”. The challenge is for each one of us to translate these principles into the circumstances of our own life, each in our own way. In that way lies happiness – and holiness. In this series of daily reflections, Fr Ron Rolheiser leads us from the dust and ashes of the desert to the joy and new life of the Resurrection.

The third chapter of Pope Francis’ Exhortation on Holiness (“Rejoice and be Glad”) is by far the most important. It is entitled “In the Light

of the Master” and we will linger over this chapter for the next few weeks.

Basically, chapter three deals with the Beat i tudes. For Pope Francis the Beat i tudes (Matthew 5:3-12 and Luke 6:20-2 3) “ a r e l i k e a C h r i s t i a n ’ s iden t i t y ca rd ”. They prov ide a profile of the life of Jesus himself and a portrait of what our lives, as disciples, should look like. They translate words like “holiness” and “perfection” into everyday realities. They are clear and simple but very challenging; indeed they turn many of our contemporary values upside down!

The f irst beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”, praises that inner freedom which disciples of Jesus should have.

The Pope’s way of putting it is “Reacting with gentleness and

humility: that is holiness”.Much of contemporary society tries to ignore

death, suf fering and illness of any kind. The third Beatitude turns this trend upside down,

e v e n t o t h e extent of calling ‘Blessed’ those who mourn. To “mourn in the Lord” is to face up to di f f icul t situations – our own or those of others – and to bring Christian faith and hope t o b e a r o n w h a t e v e r i s causing distress. The risen Jesus

invited Thomas to touch the wounds on his risen body; being a disciple means touching the wounds of those around us. “Knowing how to mourn with others: that is holiness”.

“Justice” is one of those words that can be so general and vague that it drif ts away from us too easily.
