PLAN TO ATTEND ANNUAL CHRISTMAS/BIRTHDAY DINNER ON DEC. 12 Our annual Christmas/Birthday “get-together” is an extension of a custom that began as a celebration of Msgr. Alphonse Popek’s December 9 birthday during the time he was the Spiritual Advisor of this Chapter. The tradition has con- tinued since his death in 1986. There will not be a formal address, or “speaker,” but there will be a short time after dinner, for anyone who wishes, to share a fond memory of this holy priest who touched the lives of many during his generous service to Christ’s Church. We will also hear a short report on the “State of the Chapter” from our president, Al Szews. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank all of you who responded so generously to our annual request for financial support. It will allow us to continue publishing this newsletter, and providing excellent programs and events that will encourage growth in our Catholic faith. By the time we add up the costs of printing and mailing the news-letter, paying for the afternoon use of a church hall, and providing an appropriate honorarium for a speaker, each Sunday afternoon meeting costs approximately $500. We are deeply honored that you value this effort enough that you are willing to help us defray those costs. We are most grateful, and pray that God will bless your generosity.

“This is a comprehensive one-volume encyclo-pedia of the Catholic religion characterized by a clear and traditional presentation of the-ological topics of a liturgical, historical, biblical, or moral nature. In addition to ad-dressing serious topics of doctrine and theo-logy, this encyclopedia also contains a wealth of information about Catholic customs and practices. In this, its updated edition, the en-cyclopedia becomes an even more valuable resource on matters Catholic.” -- Charles A. Salatka, Archbishop Emeritus of Oklahoma City. “The Cathol ic Encyc loped ia , edited by Fr. Stravinskas, has the advantage of being relatively inexpensive while providing complete and accurate information…to Catholics and non-Catholics.” -- George E. Lynch, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Raleigh. Contributors of $12 or more per year to the Chapter are entitled to discounts on all books displayed at CUF meetings.

CONGRATULATIONS TO FR. KUBICKI FOR HIS EXCELLENT ADDRESS IN WEST ALLIS Fr. James Kubicki, S.J., our Spiritual Advisor, was the featured speaker on November 22, at the 27th annual West Allis “Community Br eakfas t of Thanks and Giving ,” held at Klemmer’s. He delivered an excellent Thanksgiving message to over 200 West Allis citizens. We congratulate him, and thank him for representing the Catholic Church so well!

THE CATHOLIC HERALD PUBLISHES STORY ABOUT BISHOP YANTA AND MICHAEL ALEMAN The 11-18-10 edition of the Catholi c Hera ld carries a full-page story about Bishop Emeritus John Yanta and Michael Aleman, the young 17 year old young man whose life was saved when his mother saw Fr. Yanta praying in front of a San Antonio abortion clinic. We were disappointed, however, that the story did not include the fact that 19 Planned Parenthood clinics were closed in Amarillo, due to the efforts of Bishop Yanta and his Respect Life Committee, but it did include a very nice photograph of Michael and Bishop Yanta. Bishop Yanta, of course, was in Milwaukee in September to receive our “Msgr. Alphonse S. Popek Award” for his strong dedication to pro-life work. In regard to the Catho l ic Herald , Archbishop Listecki is asking for comments from subscribers and non-subscribers. You can write to the Archbishop, and/or check out the newspaper’s survey (which was still on line at the time of this writing) at: chnonline.org/.webloc

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS RESPONSE TO OUR “CONTRIBUTION” REQUEST

WE SADLY REPORT THE DEATH OF LONGTIME “CUF FRIEND,” FR. L. DUDLEY DAY It is with deep sorrow that we announce the October 3rd death of Fr. L. Dudley Day, O.S.A., at the age of 82. He was a faithful and loyal friend of our St. Gregory VII Chapter, and was the recipient of our 1997 Msgr. Alphonse S. Popek Award. According to the 10-14-10 edition of The Wanderer , Fr. Day “found his vocation at an early age, entering the Augustinian seminary in Staten Island, N.Y., at age 14 and then going on to St. Monica’s Seminary in Oconomowoc, Wis.” From 1987 to 1999, he was associate executive director of the Institute on Religious Life, a group that meets annually at St Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, IL, where we saw him often. His recent work, from 1999 to the present, was at St. John Cantius parish. We pray that his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, will rest in peace.

”In Chicago…How An Authentic Catholic Was Fired From CCHD” The Wanderer, (www.thewandererpress.com), November 25, 2010, page 1 By Thomas F. Roeser (edited – for the complete article contact [email protected])

Chicago --- In the midst of a reform of this city’s Catholic Campaign for Human Development – changing it from a funder of left-wing “empower-ment groups” to a supporter of the poor who want to better themselves – the authentic Catholic director of the program, Rey Flores, was fired.

And fired in typical fashion from an archdiocese that knows fancy polit-ical footwork – borrowed from The Squid [Chicago political machine] which operates like the Wizzard of Oz behind a screen. The CCHD direc-tor, Rey Flores, was moving ahead nicely on reforming the CCHD when a letter arrived in Francis Cardinal George’s mail signed by a Fr. Larry Dowling. He’s pastor of St. Agatha’s Church in West Lawndale. It’s the church Fr. Dan McCormack led when he was convicted of pedophilia and sent away to a federal prison for five years. Fr. Dowling was assigned to St. Agatha’s and proclaimed a “season for healing.” Now longtime Chicago Catholics know that when a priest says “just call me Larry” or “Ed” or “Bill,” chances are he’s a liberal and likely wears open-throated shirts and dungarees instead of clericals. That’s the case with Fr. Dowling: A photo of him in a sports shirt appears in all parish publications.

“Just call me Larry” Dowling was ar-rested earlier this year with a group if immigrants protesting the Arizona anti-illegals act as inhumane. Now “Just call me Larry” was protesting the inhumanity of the CCHD because of Flores’ reforms. He wrote this to the cardinal on November 2: “It has been an insult to many [anti-poverty organ-izational applicants] to be asked, ‘Does your organization support abortion or same-sex marriage?’ ” I don’t know why since the dispenser of funds collected from Catholics in the pews is an official agency of the

“We refer her to an abortion clinic and

…supply her with The Pill so she won’t get pregnant anymore. ’’

SWOP and pretended he was the father of a seventh-grade girl who is pregnant. What help does the school impart, he asked, under the SWOP aegis for a pregnant girl like his daughter? Oh, many things, said the school principal. We refer her to an abortion clinic and then supply her with The Pill so she won’t get preg-nant anymore. Thank you, said Rey Flores, and, after hanging up, he cut off the dough to SWOP. Things like this apparently bother “Just call me Larry” – and they also bother one of his priest friends, the pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in suburban Evanston, Fr. William (“Just call me Bill”) Tkachuk. They believe it’s an embarrassment for the Church to ask personal questions like Rey Flores asked the school principal. Flores designed guidelines, which he ran by community activists and which he thought were okay with the arch-diocese, which recruited him to make them consonant with the teachings of the Church. The guidelines said grants for 2011 would be to “projects [that] address poverty with respect to Catholic values and must conform to the moral teachings of the Catholic

Church. Organizations must use Catholic CCHD funding solely for the purpose stated in their application and cannot participate in any activity contrary to Catholic teaching (i.e., abortion, non-traditional marriage, euthanasia, racism…etc.). The next thing that happened was that “Just call me Larry” Dowling and “Just call me Bill” Tkachuk started a campaign of pressure to fire Flores and return Chicago’s CCHD to its old liberal stance. Now it so happens that “Just call me Larry” Dowling is not just another priest. He heads a deanery and is an official consultor to the cardinal. He and ”Just call me Bill” rounded up a group of activist liberal priests who accused Flores of inflicting “great damage” that included: “…spreading false information about CCHD…disseminated by those who oppose the Church’s promotion of empowering the poor…a lack of proper vetting and formation of new members of the CCHD selection team…an attempt to limit the funding of community organizing in general.” …After Flores discovered he was fired and the news got out via word of mouth, a media spokeswoman…said that while Flores has apparently de-parted, there would be no change in the regular archdiocesan policy…At the Baltimore meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Francis Kane announced that it is his recom-mendation that the bishops tighten CCHD guidelines for dispensing fi-nancial aid to groups that empower the poor – and square them with the national HQ which takes a more beneficent attitude toward empower-ment. Which means, he said, that the Chicago CCHD - in the words of The Chicago Tribune – “might have to scale back some of the changes they rolled out in August when the fund-raising effort rewarded more than $300,000 to 31 groups that, for exam-ple, provided pregnancy counseling to divert women from getting abortions…”

Catholic archdiocese here, but “Just call me Larry” was worked up about it. He was worked up because Rey Flores double-checked an organization, which has been receiving $45,000 a year from CCHD. It’s called the “Southwest Organization Project” which among other things spends CCHD money educating public school children. Ed-ucating them how? Oh, on a number of familial issues. Just curious, Flores cal-led one of the local schools served by
