2016 - 2017 Reflections Every year at this time our 2016/17 data is collated and it is inevitable
that just for a moment or two, my day to day activities are suspended
while I take time to reflect on this past year’s activities. Thanks to our fabulous
Advocacy Tasmania team of employees and volunteers, we have achieved some truly
outstanding results and I could not be more proud to present those to you.
In this sector we always seem to face so many challenges. At times, they come at us
one after the other or even several at once and being a small organisation it can feel
quite overwhelming. However, with change there is also opportunity. I am in awe of
our dedicated, agile and responsive team who are able to rise to those challenges
and consistently produce outstanding results for vulnerable Tasmanians. I believe
that this resilience and ability to evolve is Advocacy Tasmania’s greatest strength.
One of the major challenges has been the large volume of additional work associated
with the establishment of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN). This year
we have been working tirelessly with eight other advocacy services to form OPAN
which was recently awarded a three year, $25.7 million grant to provide the new
National Aged Care Advocacy Program across Australia. Together, our organisations
will provide seamless, consistent and high quality advocacy services that will support
older Australians to have their say and exercise their rights, choice, and control.
A major focus this year has been increasing our state-wide reach through our
education and information work. As you will see over the page, we provided 1,214
education sessions that reached 20,399 people! This represents increases of 62%
and 190% respectively from the previous year. We also provided support to 3,287
individuals, which is an increase of 19%. Congratulations, employees and volunteers
– this is truly a remarkable result.
Some other highlights include entering into a memorandum of understanding with
Legal Aid to provide joined-up support for people dealing with elder abuse, launching
our new website, and our systemic advocacy work around the National Disability
Insurance Scheme and elder abuse law reform to name only a few.
We are already into the next financial year but for now I hope you will enjoy reading
about our 2016/17 achievements.
