For runners, walkers and supporters of the fight against cancer, the 11th annual Shirley Mae Run and Michael J. Walk returns to Atlantic City on
Saturday, May 11. The Tropicana will host this year’s event, which will bring more than 250 breast cancer sur-vivors and 2,500 participating runners — and sponsoring organizations — to the historic Boardwalk. The event ben-efits the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund and the Michael J. Neustadter Pancreatic Cancer Fund. The Shirley Mae Fund assists cancer patients in southeastern New Jersey with medical related expenses. The Michael J. Neustadter Pancreatic Cancer Fund provides finan-cial assistance to individuals diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in need, and also offers grants to support research programs related to treatment, prevention and diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. The Shirley Mae 5K Run is ideal for the more experienced runner, while the novice may want to try the Michael J. 1.5 Mile Walk. For children 12 and under, there will be a Kids Fun Run. Cash prizes and medals will be awarded. And while he’s no Mike Tyson — who appeared at the 2010 Shirley Mae Run and Gilda’s Walk — participants will have a chance to walk with chief meteorologist Dan Skeldon of NBC-TV 40 this year. For more than 20 years, it’s been a tradition on the beach in Somers Point off Bay Avenue: free concerts each Friday night in the summertime from 7-9pm.
This year’s line-up includes some old friends, many award-winning artists, local favorites and a bunch of nationally heralded acts. The series kicks off June 14 this year with Blues Awards Album of the Year winner and all-around great guy, songwriter and musician “Jumpin’” Johnny Sansone. Sansone, who grew up in New Jersey, has been based in New Orleans for many years and his music reflects his bayou connections. On June 21, it’s the soul-funk sounds of Mingo Fishtrap, an Austin, Texas band you don’t want to miss. Local guitar hero Billy Walton and his band take the stage June 28 and July 4 will feature long-time Jersey shore favorite Bob Campanell and his band doing their annual Independence Day gig. The next day, Friday, July 5, the series continues with the Jeremiah Hunter Band. July and August performers include the Kinsey Report (July 12), Walter Trout & his Band (July 19), Bonerama (July 26), Vini Lopez & License to Chill (Aug. 2), Southern Hospitality w/ Victor Wainwright, J.P. Soars and Damon Fowler (Aug. 9), Preston Shannon & his Band (Aug. 16), Bryan Lee & the Blues Power Band (Aug. 23), Dr. Bobby Fingers with Danny Eyer (Aug. 30) and the Eddie Morgan Jazz Ensemble with special guest Jackie Greggs closing out the series on Sept. 6. All concerts are free and take place at the Somers Point Beach. Bring a beach chair, blanket, and a sweatshirt for those wonderful summer evening bay breezes. Top-notch entertainment, gorgeous sunsets, plenty of restaurants in the area for before or after the shows and one of the most outstanding community-minded endeavors in the region — and you can’t beat the price.
Dennis Gomes was a former respected casino executive in Atlantic City at the
Trump Taj Mahal and Tropicana, and was a co-owner of Resorts when he passed away suddenly at the age of 68 in February of 2012. Before his success in the casino business he helped battle mob influence in Las Vegas as head of the audit division chief of the Nevada Gaming Control Board, where his work helped inspire the Martin Scorsese film Casino. Now his daughter Danielle Gomes, with co-author Jay Bonansinga, has written an account of those days fight-ing the Mob called Hit Me! The book covers Gomes’ work in Vegas battling real life goodfellas from 1971 to 1978. To celebrate the release of the book, Danielle Gomes is having a book signing event Friday, May 10, 5:30-8pm at Cuba Libre in the Quarter at Tropicana Casino Resort. The event includes a signed book, hors d’oeurves and cash bar. Tickets are $35 and proceeds benefit the Dennis Gomes Scholarship Fund. Tickets will be available at the door. Danielle was working on the book with her father when he passed away but refused to let the book die with him. She is a freelance writer and filmmaker who co-wrote and nar-rated a documentary short on America’s homeless that won a Telly Award.

The slogan South Jersey Strong was heard often in the weeks and months following Sandy’s devastation, and
the expression may best be epitomized by a thriving Margate music scene that appears nearly back to full strength at the six-month mark of the storm’s passing.
“Margate loves its music,” says musician Steve Moore, singer and saxophonist for Steve Moore and the M.I.A. band that plays the next two Friday nights (May 10 and 17, from 9:30pm-1:30am) at the latest addi-tion to Margate’s live-music lineage, Bocca. “You’re seeing it grow again at places like Steve & Cookie’s [By the Bay, which hosts live jazz nightly], at Sofia where my friend [singer Christine Daisy] fronts duos and trios on weekends, of course at Maynard’s and now Bocca. The shore’s coming back. Margate was hit hard but it’s starting to come back.”
Bocca is sited on Ventnor Avenue (as is Johnny’s Café of Margate, which hosts live music Wednesdays and Sundays and does DJ-staffed dance parties Friday and Saturday nights), and suffered less Sandy damage than Amherst Avenue establish-ments Sofia, Maynard’s, Steve & Cookie’s and Tomatoe’s (which also morphs into more of an entertainment destination after peak dining hours are over).
“[Bocca] only opened a week or two before Sandy, then managed to get back up and running almost the day after the storm passed,” says Moore, whose M.I.A. band also includes Tony Nappi on guitar and vocals, Rocky Pepino on bass and, when needed, drummer Scott Clearfield and keyboardist Nick Koutotsios. “All the other restaurants were wiped out and I’ll never forget, the day after, just about everybody who stayed in Margate through the storm was hanging out [at Bocca] and partying.
“This guy [Bocca co-owner] Louie Freedman is a good dude who gave a lot of help to workers and residents when the storm first passed,” says Moore. “He just started doing music. He’s got Patty Blee in there [returning May 29], a good friend of mine, and beyond the next two Fridays, if
I have any extra days, I told him I’d love to come back, otherwise I’m booked every Friday night at Maynard’s after Memorial Day.”
Bocca recently reconfigured what had been an enclosed room for small private functions into an open space perfect for solo artists or live bands of almost any size. Other artists performing there this month include the blues, power-rock quartet Brandon Ireland Band (May 11), Tony Pontari (May 15), Robert Palillo (May 22) and the Secret Agent Band (May 18 and 31).
“[Freedman] saw us doing a party at The Log Cabin [a private Margate club] and told us he liked our sound [particularly M.I.A.’s extensive repertoire of Springsteen, John Cafferty and “Jersey Sound” songs], and asked if we wanted to play at his place,” says Moore, who also fronts the David Christopher Band that returns for a 13th summer to Nardi’s on Long Beach Island (which is also recovering from near-total Sandy devastation). “[Bocca] had been set-ting bands up right at the end of the bar, which was in the middle of the room, and he blew this wall out that he was going to use for catering or small parties and such. It’s a long area of about 40 by 75 feet, which is ideal for any size group.”
A union electrician by day, Moore does about 70 gigs per year between two bands and several sites. He comes from a music pedigree as his uncle, Joe Gilbay, was a pro-fessional drummer whose haunts included the legendary bygone 500 Club, and who owned Gilbay’s Music Center for 30 years. His mother, Patricia Moore, graduated from Philadelphia’s esteemed Settlement School of Music and sang soprano as a professional opera singer. His career as a sax player included studying under the tutelage of Michael Pedicin Jr., who regularly performs in the South Jersey area.
“I studied with him for about a year, which doesn’t sound like a lot but by the end of that year I was a much better player,” says Moore. “He’s a great guy and an incred-ible musician.” ■

Jerry, I read how you became friends with Don Rickles, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. You also know the Philly area radio personalities. Did you introduce Sid Mark to Frank? Do you meet up with Frank Jr. when he performs in A.C.? — Ted, Richboro, Pa.
I was instrumental in letting Mo Ostin, who Frank hired as president of Reprise, become aware of what Sid Mark was doing with his Fridays with Frank show. In 1966 I had received an invitation to Frank’s appearances at the Sands in Vegas but due to my commitments could not attend, so I suggested to Mo and Mickey Rudin, Frank’s attorney, that Sid should be the one invited. And that’s how their friend-ship began. As far as Frank Jr., unfortunately, because of my schedule, I very rarely have been able to see him, but my buddy Sgt. Merrill Kelem, who was with Frank Sr. for many years, is now with Junior.
You have been playing a song that goes, “You’re mine, now the story can be told why our love was a secret,” and you said it was by Dean Barlow and the Crickets. What is the name of this song and is it the same Crickets as Buddy Holly’s group? — M. Massi, Williamstown, N.J.
A completely different group, with a completely different style from Buddy Holly’s rockabilly group, who were from Texas. Dean Barlow’s Crickets were a New York group from the Bronx, and they recorded “You’re Mine” on the MGM label back in 1952, several years before Buddy’s group came on the scene. It was the first of the great harmony ballads of the era recorded by the Crickets..

That was a 1963 one-hit wonder by a group called the Ran-Dells, who actually were from the Wildwood area. One of their members, Steve Randle, was a disc jockey who created the record’s unusual electronic sound. It caught the attention of Donny Kirschner, who signed them to his label. Entertainer Sal Richards will be out to prove a point when he opens a five-day run Sunday (May 12) in the
Tropicana Showroom.Not that he’s a very funny comedian who
more than lives up to his nickname “Mr. Laughs.” Or that he can carry a tune better than most when he slips into singing mode to do some vocal impressions.
Those are givens after a half-century in the business.
Richards is looking to make a more impor-tant statement with this gig.
“I haven’t been back to Atlantic City in such a long time that I wanted to make my presence known,” Richards says. “I’m still alive, I’m still around and I’m still as funny as ever.”
It’s been five years since the last time Richards bounced the boards of a casino stage here. And that seems like an eternity to Richards, considering there was a 15-year peri-od when it only seemed like he was performing here every five weeks.
Richards was one of the rare Atlantic City entertainers who was just as comfortable work-ing in a lounge as he was performing in the main showrooms, and he did plenty of both.
One of the reasons Richards found all the work he wanted in Atlantic City’s lounges wasn’t simply because of the size of the crowds he drew. It was who he attracted to the smaller rooms that made him a sought-after performer.
Long before he began performing in Atlantic City, Richards had a reputation for appealing as much to his fellow entertainers as he did to the public.
On any given weekend, headliners perform-ing at other properties would invariably show up to catch his late show on Saturday night, usually in the 300-seat Celebrity Cabaret at the old Claridge Casino Hotel.
The late Dom DeLuise, for instance, would finish his shows at Resorts and make a beeline for the Claridge. Jay Leno would headline the Copa Room at the old Sands and walk across the street to catch Richards.
The late Peter Allen would often cut short his backstage hang out time with friends and fans so he could make it to Richards’ show.
And once Richards roped the big names into the small room, they’d invariably jump up on stage to kibbitz with him, much to the delight of the audience and the casino bosses, who reaped the rewards of Richards’ big-time bud-dies on some other casino’s dime.
So effective was Richards at stirring up a crowd with his mix of ad-lib comedy, spot-on impressions and songs that the Brooklyn-born Italian tummler (it’s a Yiddish expression; Google it) could even get the most reticent stars to join him on stage without even asking.
“One night, Engelbert Humperdinck called and told me he was coming in, but he
didn’t want me to introduce him and said he wouldn’t come on stage,” Richards recalls dur-ing a chat from his home in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Richards respected the crooner’s wishes. But near the end of his set, as he was singing a song, Humperdinck leaped on stage from his ringside table, grabbed the microphone away from Richards and finished the song himself.
“And this guy didn’t want anyone to know he was even there,” Richards says with a laugh.
In addition to his stand-up work — which has taken him from small clubs on Long Island to the Catskills Mountain resorts and eventu-ally to Las Vegas and even the legendary and long-gone Copacabana in New York, Richards has had a parallel acting career in both movies and television.
A documentary on his life, Mr. Laughs - A Look Behind the Curtain, won a bunch of awards in 2008 because of its candid look at the entertainer’s life, which has seen its share of successes and sorrows, including the 1995 death from cancer of his 21-year-old son, Sal Jr. The film led to Richards’ autobiography, Behind the Laugher: Hidden Tears, which was warmly received by fans and critics for its candor.
Richards, who’s been married to his wife Roseanne for more than 50 years, says his Tropicana shows — which kick off with a Mother’s Day matinee — will pick up where his last Atlantic City shows left off.
Most of the material will be fresh and some of it will be ad-libbed. But just like a singer with hit records, he’ll do some tried and true material, too. Times have changed since the last time he worked Atlantic City, but he does have some set bits that his fans anticipate.
“I admit that I do have some stuff that is stock that I won’t take out of my act because it always works,” he says. n

Rush is on the road behind another new album, Clockwork Angels. But it’s just not about the fresh tunes
for the veteran power trio, which stops Saturday, May 11, at the Mark Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.
The venerable Canadian band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month, still has it nearly four decades after the release of its eponymous debut album.
The band delivered a balanced show in Philadelphia in October. The concert fea-tured fresh material that was complement-ed by a number of deep album cuts, as well as familiar favorites.
Guitarist Alex Lifeson spoke to AC Weekly about why Rush, which formed 44 years ago, is compelled to release new tunes; what intense, very private drummer/lyricist Neil Peart is really like, and the voice of Geddy Lee.
Your show last autumn featured quite a few unexpected tunes, many of which were from the ’80s. Why did you go back to the Reagan era for a healthy bit of your set?
Much of the ’80s Rush era was overlooked. There’s some good songs there. The ’80s material was tough for me since it was so keyboard-laden. But we’re doing those songs now with more of a guitar presence.
Bringing back “The Analog Kid,” which is getting quite a bit of play on satellite radio, was a big crowd-pleaser.
It’s true. Rush fans love that song. We last played “Analog Kid” on the Test for Echo tour. It was time to bring that song back and others like it. We don’t want to do the same tour over and over again.
If you did, you wouldn’t release new albums. You would just be a nostalgia act.
I would never want to be a nostalgia act. There is a time to celebrate your past, and we’ve done that in the past, but we continue to validate our existence by making new material.
You changed it up with Clockwork Angels. It’s one of the most straightforward Rush albums.
We really stripped it down a lot with this album. It has a more open sound. I think we were more energized. The great thing with our fans is that they do want to hear us come up with new songs.
Neil Peart writes about many heavy things, but there’s been a dearth of love songs. A pundit once asked whether Rush had any girlfriends. Why hasn’t Neil written about girls?
We probably have written about two love songs. One might have been “The Manhattan Project.” (Laughs)
You obviously knew about girls. You were a father at 17.
Yes and a grandfather at 50. It runs in the family. In high school, my wife and I both missed the same health class.
How could you have married with all of that groupie temptation?
There wasn’t a lot of temptation on the Rush tour bus for us. Fortunately our audi-ence is 99 percent male, which made things a lot easier than it could have been if we were another band.
There’s some mystery around Neil Peart. What is he really like?
Neil doesn’t suffer fools easily. He’s very intelligent, very well read. Believe it or not, he laughs and jokes a lot. But when it comes to work, he’s very serious.
You’ve scored considerable respect from your peers. Members of Metallica, Tool and Smashing Pumpkins, among others, have given props to Rush.
That’s a nice bonus. What means the most is what our fans think of us, but it’s great to hear that those from great bands like what we do.
“What About The Voice of Geddy Lee/How Did It Get So High/I Wonder If He Speaks Like An Ordinary Guy/I Know Him And He Does” is some wordplay from Pavement’s amusing cut “Stereo.” What did you guys think of those lyrics, which name-check your singer and then some?
We just shake our head and laugh at stuff like that. It’s funny. Geddy certainly has a unique voice.
How does it feel to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame?
Anytime you’re recognized, it’s an honor.
It really is an amazing thing.
The current configuration of Rush has been around for nearly 40 years. How much longer can the band last?
Hopefully for a long time. We got into this at a young age, and fortunately it worked out well for us. This band means so much to us and apparently to a lot of our fans as well. I hope we can keep going for years. We still have a lot left in us. We just enjoy what we do so much. We appreciate the response we get from our fans at our shows. We also appreciate that they are into our new albums. It’s not as if they all run to conces-sions when we play the new material. We’ll keep doing this as long as we’re having fun with it and right now we’re having a great time. ■

Few among us have ever experienced the kind of prolonged capacity for high adventure that might make the
backdrop for a good book, and probably fewer of those who did could be creatively adept enough to write such a book.
Bill Schweigart, a U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduate who served five years in the USCG, achieving the rank of lieutenant, is one who can say he has done both.
The southern New Jersey native (Woodbury Heights, Gloucester County), who spent much of his childhood and early-adult summers on the beaches of Ocean City, has penned a novel called Slipping The Cable that is lightly based on his experienc-es in the USCG patrolling the seas, carrying out search-and-rescue missions, keeping the coastline safe and generally living a military life at sea. Schweigart, who now works for the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Infrastructure Protection, deftly relates in the novel what this maritime life can be like without being overzealous in his Coast Guard jargon, or speaking in terms the layman might not understand.
His character development is exceptional, riveting the reader to the novel’s princi-pal player, Ensign Kelly Sensor, and its chief antagonist, Captain Kevin Aregood, who torments Sensor from cover to cover. Several exciting sub-plots all get tied neatly together in an action-packed ending in Key West, Fla., where of course vengeance is served.
Sensor’s good friend and roommate aboard the Sentinel — the 270-foot Coast Guard cutter on which much of the storyline takes place — is an equally likeable character of Cuban descent named Jorge Vargas, and others who play prominently into the main plot are fellow crewmen, a mysteri-ous figure best known as the Chaplain, and the Chaplain’s daughter Piper who wins Sensor’s affection. Cable is a novel that, particularly for those who love stories of the sea, keeps the reader Semper Paratus (the USCG’s motto meaning “always ready”) for more.
“Though much of the book takes place at sea, the Jersey shore is featured prominently and is in the book’s DNA,” Schweigart tells

Schweigart — who soon anticipates the release of his second novel, a supernatural thriller called The Beast of Barcroft — says on the Web site coastguardchannel.com that inspiration for Slipping The Cable (a title
derived from Coast Guard vernacular mean-ing to cut an anchor line in order make a swift getaway) grew out of a few sleep-less, seasick nights in rough water during his service aboard the Coast Guard cutter Bear.
“Being at sea was incredible, except when conditions made me wish I was somewhere else,” Schweigart says. “That’s how Slipping The Cable was born — during those times I wished to be somewhere else.”
Melissa Newman of the Barbourville, Kentucky-based Martin Sisters Publishing, which released Slipping The Cable in mid-October 2012, was quoted in a Navy Times’ book review (navytimes.com) as saying “[Schweigart] is a master at dialogue and narrative, and at marrying those two things together. A lot of elements that go into mak-ing a great book; he had them all.” n

It’s that time of year again.As southern New Jersey’s shore
slowly but unmistakably awakes from its off-season slumber, one of the first undeniable signs of renewed life are changes in the restaurant scene.
This summer, however, remains demon-strably different; the region still struggles recovering from Sandy’s physical and eco-nomic aftershocks.
Having said that, there is still plenty of activity to report in the realm of dining, starting with Ocean City.
Surf Café, 715 8th St., Ocean City Shuttered since last fall, this facility one
block off the Boards was purchased early in 2013 by Michael Carmody, formerly execu-tive chef at Somers Point’s Greate Bay. Prior to that 14-year stint, Carmody helped launch two Trump casino properties, The Plaza and Castle. Open currently Wednesday through Sunday for breakfast and lunch, longer hours are planned near Memorial Day. Working alongside the chef are wife Debbie and col-legiate son Michael II. While incorporating many of the prior menu items, Carmody has added his own distinct touches in the form of traditional sausage gravy over house-made biscuits, cream chipped beef served on a soft Philly pretzel, a summer salad incorporating watermelon, papaya and fresh berries plus a corn/crab fritter accompanied by lemon garlic aioli.
Sunrise Café, 949 Asbury Ave., Ocean City
New operators are the Idell family, whose daughter is also owner of Ocean City’s Boardwalk-based Monkey Bread. (For those unfamiliar, MB is a soft, frosted cinnamon delight somewhere on the flavor/texture spectrum midway between sticky buns and donuts.) Appropriately enough, a major fea-ture at Sunrise are fresh-baked goods includ-ing scones and a truly spectacular golden brown English popover with honey-cinnamon
butter. In addition to serving breakfast and lunch, Sunrise also offers fresh deli products
Dees 14th Street Café 403 E. 14th St., Ocean City
An initial venture from husband and wife team Paul and Isolde “Dee” Benyo, sum-mer O.C. residents, replaces the wonderful Chinese hidden gem R.I. Café.
Patrons should expect a creative bill of fare with many elements of southern cuisine. Like a signature breakfast item — Dee’s flaky, inch-and-a-half tall buttermilk bis-cuits — plus Paul’s cured gravlax salmon, proprietary formula sage-infused sausage patties plus bananas Foster French toast. Lunches include chicken sliders and house-made pulled pork.
Moving north, onto Absecon island, our first stop is Margate.
John’s Steaks 9401 Ventnor Ave., Margate
The latest addition to the burgeoning food empire of John and Joanne Liscio, owner/operators of Johnny’s Café (9407 Ventnor Ave.). The couple has expanded up the block to offer a true South Philly walk-up sandwich counter. Highlighted by, of course, cheeses-teaks. We visited on a recent weekday and devoured a Wit’ American (fried onion and American cheese, in Philly-speak) and a juicy roast pork with provolone. Don’t miss the whole, hot cherry peppers and tangy pickled pepper hash from their self-serve condiment station, either.
The mystery remains: just what do the Liscios plan for their recently-purchased adjacent property, the longtime location of Fedeli’s at 9403 Ventnor?
Speaking of Ventnor, two more entries from that mid-island community follow.
Stella, 7303 Ventnor Ave., Ventnor
The fourth downbeach eatery from family operators Nick and Stephanie LoBianco — they also currently have Salt Ayre Bistro two doors down — Stella is an upscale trattoria bathed in black and white hues. Food includes an app of dates stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in bacon, arugula and Granny Smith apples, a salad of grilled romaine, crispy pancetta, goat cheese, pesto and balsamic and entrees like chicken pan-zanella; roasted breast, tomato, cucumber and arugula with lemon-scented croutons and seafood fra diavolo.
Megu Sushi 5214 Atlantic Ave., Ventnor
The third restaurant authored by chef Steven Megu Lin opened in Ventnor a little over a month ago at real estate formerly housing the underwhelming and moribund Kitaro.
Already running well-regarded spots in the competitive Camden County markets of Moorestown and Cherry Hill, Lin’s east-ern outpost should help satiate our region’s seemingly endless appetite for all things sushi and sashimi.
His creations include unique stuff too; hamachi kama; broiled yellowtail jaw, a gourmet treat, prized Pacific Kumamoto oys-ters, topped with fish roe, scallion and lemon ponzu sauce and tuna pizza; fresh tuna, guacamole, lump crab meat and baby greens atop tortillas.
Finally, one of the most venerable, albeit off-the-beaten-path restaurants locally, The Buck Tavern (in Corbin City), changed own-ership recently. New operators Tom and Jill Fluharty landed the Route 50 institution — popular with shore-bound travelers — after being displaced from their Asbury Avenue Ocean City diner, A Shore Thing, post-Sandy. Little information was available at press time, but the rustic restaurant expects to reopen May 9. n

Walter’s success in broadcasting should come as no surprise.
The New Jersey native — raised in Somerset County and now residing at the South Jersey shore — has enjoyed more than 20 years on the radio airways, the majority of which were as host of a relation-ship-based talk show out of Trenton called Passion Phones that was the first to ever rank among the best in both the Philly and New York radio markets. She was also the first-ever female morning-drive radio host in New Jersey, and has regularly guest hosted for stations across the nation, appearing as part of the Great American Panel on Sean Hannity’s Fox New Channel’s radio and TV broadcasts, among others.
Last month Walter blazed new trails as a nighttime talk-show host on KOOL 98.3 — one of the five radio stations comprising the Linwood-based Longport Media Group. The show, called Life! With Mary Walter, airs 9pm-midnight weekdays and is a departure from KOOL’s format of music program-ming of hits from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Walter also strives to make listeners more interactive in terms of dispensing advice on broader-based subject matter than just relationships. Wheels are also in motion to possibly simulcast the show in other cities, with KOOL 98.3 (which turns 30 this sum-mer) as its home base.
Atlantic City Weekly recently spoke with Walter by phone.
I see you’re a Villanova grad. Was broad-cast journalism your major?
It’s funny, when I went to Villanova I did not do radio. I studied communications and, frankly, I was enough of a dork and knew that the guys who were part of the radio station — which could only be heard in one building — were bigger dorks than I was, so it was my way of preserving what little standing I had. But I did become part of the group that would go around the campus to the different organizations and do leadership and group training, and that’s pretty much what I thought I’d do when I got out of col-lege — work with a company’s HR (human resources) department, and I actually did do that for a while. But I rapidly learned that the first thing that any organization cuts is HR, so that didn’t work out too well.
How did your radio career materialize?I actually won a contest. I was working
as a consultant for AT&T — because if you grow up in Somerset County, every single person works at AT&T at some point. It’s like growing up in a mining town. I was there for several years and my contract ended and I didn’t have another job. My husband [a physician] was doing his resi-dency in Philadelphia and I used to listen to New Jersey 101.5 on my way down there. They had gone to talk and were looking for
[Longport president] Dave Coskey has a reputation for creativity and trying new things. Was he largely behind the idea for the new show?
Yes, and it’s interesting in that Dave didn’t grow up, if you want to say, in radio, so he doesn’t have that group-mind thing that is so pervasive in the industry. You probably see it in the newspaper industry, too, where it’s always been done this way so we always have to continue to do it this way. Dave does not have that mindset because he doesn’t know how it’s always been done. [Longport] cross-promotes, which is a huge no-no in the radio indus-try. You never talk about another radio station on air, and they talk about the other shows on the other [Longport] sta-tions all the time, so everybody gets along because there’s no animosity that way. Their philosophy is that if they’re not going to listen to WOND, or they’re not going to listen to KOOL, then maybe they’ll like something on one of the other stations and it’ll keep it in the family. It makes sense once you hear it, but I’ve been in radio for 20-something years and I’ve never heard a GM or PD [program director] say that.
I first started filling in for [Longport] on WOND, but Dave knew me from when I’d occasionally talk about Villanova when I was on 101.5, and we both went to Villanova. He introduced himself and we’d correspond by e-mail ... The old show [Passion Phones] came up and we spoke on the phone, and I said I have someone who would love to syn-dicate [a similar show], someone who says it has a lot of potential to sell against political talk radio, which is everywhere now. If it’s not politics it’s sports, and there’s really not much out there for people who don’t want to talk politics or sports, and might want something that’s not as intense. Politics right now is really intense. People are really polarized right now. So we were looking for a station to take the plunge and do some-thing different, and [Coskey] said we might be interested.
We had a conference call on a Monday with Dave, [Longport VP of broadcast oper-ations] Paul Kelly, and Ron Hartenbaum, the owner of WYD Media [which would handle syndication] who’s been bugging me to do this for about eight years now. After agreeing to some time to talk things over we had another conference call on Wednesday and [Longport] said yeah, let’s do this, and let’s do it on FM, which we thought was even better. If you’re going to take a chance go for it, and they did. ■

exact same situation.”someone to host the evening show — the relationship show — and they were having an on-air contest. I would listen to women auditioning and I’d say “I can do that,” and my husband got so sick of hearing me say that he told me to call. So I called from a phone booth in the King of Prussia Mall — this was back in the days of phone booths — and I got a callback. I went in for an audi-tion, they asked me to come back a second time, and within a week I had the job [which turned into Passion Phones].
Your new show has been on about a month
(since April 8). How’s it been going?We’re just finishing up our fourth week,
which is exciting. [KOOL]’s not a station that’s used to having callers. I do fill-in work all over the country, so when I fill in on another station, say in Chicago, even if it’s my first time there people will usu-ally call in if it’s a call-in audience. They’re used to it. This is a music audience. They’re not used to calling in, and we know that there’s a period of time where people have to get used to that and get comfortable with the idea. There’s a bit of a learning curve.
Is your current format similar to what you hosted for years as Passion Phones?
Yes, but we’re broadening it a bit more to give people some different things to talk about, which is why the show does not have a “relationship” name per se like Passion Phones. It’s called Life! With Mary Walter because I wanted to be able to talk about other things that affect your life besides relationships. Relationships are so universal — you’re either in one, you want to get into one, or you’re in one and want to get out. Everybody’s been there, and the great thing about it is that even though you target a certain audience, people who are older can call in and talk about their experiences with younger lis-teners. They’re such a valuable resource in giving younger people advice, so I’d like to get it to focus on where it’s more advice from the listeners.
I’ll give my opinion, but it’s really about the listeners because there’s so many different people who have been in the exact same situation. I think it’s a slow build. We’ve been noticing a real up-tick in the comments online.

Since I received a death threat (seri-ously) when I panned the original Iron Man movie, I’m happy to report
that Iron Man 3 is by far the best film in the series with a sensational story beautifully presented, and featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s best performance to date as Tony Stark.
This film cleverly refers to The Avengers for its most recent back-story, and continues the evolution of Tony Stark’s transforma-tion from antihero to classic hero without losing his cynical edge.
The architect behind the latest Iron Man is writer-director Shane Black, who estab-lished the template for the modern cynical antihero with his screenplay for Lethal Weapon. He also wrote and directed one of my favorite films of the last decade, the black comedy/detective thriller hybrid Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), which featured not coincidentally, a fabulous performance by Downey. These two have a special bond that is put to good use in Iron Man 3.
We are reacquainted with Tony Stark per-haps just a few months past his Avengers adventure, and that combination of alien invaders and a wormhole of horror have still got him spooked. Stark, the ultimate egomaniac antihero, is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. He can’t sleep and he is plagued by bad dreams and anxiety attacks. These personal issues have to be pushed aside however when a new menace threatens the world, a terrorist called Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), and a think tank genius (Aldrich Killian played by Guy Pearce), who was once thoroughly humili-ated by Stark and has been looking for pay-back ever since.
Stark throws down the gauntlet, a burst of macho defiance directed towards Mandarin, and does exactly what he fears most, puts his beloved Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) in danger.
After an attack that destroys their home, Stark is presumed dead and uses this oppor-tunity to hide out in a small town and find out exactly what services Killian is provid-
ing that are so valuable to Mandarin. The answer is what makes this story hum with a dark edge that is invigorating and elevates a summer popcorn movie to a Dark Knight-like level.
Iron Man 3 packs all the clever one-liners and tons of fun we’re expecting while con-trasting that fun with an authentic sense of menace. Stark much face a demon of his own creation in order to triumph, and the final showdown is superhero fireworks of the highest order, both visually and emo-tionally.
Downey delivers his best performance to date as the man in the iron suit because of the new layers of humility and angst mixed in with his previous bravado and ego-fueled confidence, transforming Stark into a com-plex, real human being we can finally root for without hesitation.
I’d love to tell you about Ben Kingley’s performance but I can’t since it would be a major spoiler alert. Let’s just call it unex-pected from the villain role. Pearce, how-ever, delivers exactly what you expect from the best superhero movie villains — con-trolled madness until it is time to unleash the beast. I’d also like to thank Black for finally giving Paltrow’s Potts a chance to show her gritty side and kick some ass.
Beyond his excellence as a wordsmith, Shane Black delivers a variety of incred-ible action sequences, the most memorable being the rescue of people who are sucked out of Air Force One right before it is blown apart.
Great dialogue, a thrilling story and memorable characters is the popcorn movie trifecta and Black delivers that and more with real emotion and true grit. n
