Pierre Du Gua De Monts (1558?-1628) was a governor of Acadia and
founder of the first permanent settlement in Canada. In 1604 with Samuel De
Champlain he established a colony at Ile Sainte-Croix (Dochet Island). Due to
many unfavourable living and farming conditions he moved the colony to Port-
Royal the following year. "New information, relating to Pierre du Gu, seems very
limited-even after the lapse of between three and four centuries. The present
offering consists of a legal document, two receipts signed by de Monts, some
pictures of his native country (vicinity of Saintonge), and considerable
genealogical data." [Preface]

5. Richard, Edouard. Signature of Edouard Richard and a

Avec les amities de L'Autheur Edward Richard Juin 1895". Both
signature page and portrait are in very good condition and from the
1895 New York edition of Acadia Missing Link of a Lost Chapter
in American History. $60.00
Richard was born in Princeville, Quebec to Louis-Eusèbe
Richard and Hermine Prince. After receiving his law degree in
1867, taking courses at both Université Laval and McGill College,
Richard began to practice in Athabaskaville with Wilfrid Laurier.
He practiced for several years before being elected to the House of
Commons from Mégantic in 1872 and was re-elected in 1874. His
health forced him to not seek reelection in the 1878 Canadian Parliamentary elections. Politically, Richard was a
liberal protectionist. Richard became the sheriff of the Northwest Territories soon after leaving the House of
Commons, and remained in that position until January 1883. After resigning from his post as sheriff, he sought
election to the House of Commons again in 1883 in St. Boniface, but was defeated by Alphonse Alfred Clément
Larivière. Richard sought election once more, in 1889 in Provencher, but Lariviére again defeated him. Richard
was of Acadian heritage and following his last failed campaign, he returned to Athabaskaville and began to
immerse himself in his heritage. He fervently promoted the Acadian cause, petitioning for an Acadian museum,
working on his own research, and even starting a campaign for reparations. An 1893 article in Toronto by Pierce
Stevens Hamilton and histories by Francis Parkman and Thomas Beamish Akins spurred Richard to begin his own
published history. His work, “Acadia, Missing Links of a Lost Chapter in American History”, was published in
two volumes in 1895. His work was controversial, both for mixing English and French in text and, more
significantly, lacking annotations and citations. In 1897, Richard, who never married, was named the successor to
Joseph Marmette as the official Canadian archivist in France. This was his last main work before his death in
Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan in 1904.

25. (British Gov't.). Correspondence Respecting Occurrences At Fortune Bay,
Newfoundland in January 1878 North America. No.3 (1878) printed at top of

London. 1878. Pp.31. Quarto. 12.5 x8 inches (33 x 21 cm). Some foxing to cover

In Jan. 1878 a fleet of American bankers arrived in Fortune Bay to engage in a
winter herring fishery. Rather than purchase bait by treaty right, the Americans
decided to catch herring themselves. Local fishers were dismayed at the prospect of
losing valuable winter income and feared that the Americans might sell bait to the
French as well. About two dozen American vessels, equipped with huge herring
seines of unusually small mesh size, began to sweep the bay at Long Harbour. On
Sunday the 6th of January an angry crowd began to gather on local beaches when it
became apparent that the Americans would not obey Newfoundland law. Members
of the crowd attacked some of the Americans, seized and destroyed their seines,
dumped about two thousand barrels of herring and drove the Americans away. The
imperial government later conceded that the Americans were indeed in violation of the Newfoundland law that
prohibited fishing on Sunday, seining in a closed season, and barring herring. These occurrences at Fortune Bay
(as it became known as) highlighted the displeasure the Americans had with the Halifax award (Halifax fisheries
commission 1877) and forced the British Government to state that the Americans must obey Newfoundland Law.
This document contains 21 papers concerning the occurrences and the final decision by the British Government
[Cadigan-His. of Nfld.].

Sir Thomas George Roddick (July 31, 1846 – February 20, 1923)
was a Canadian surgeon, medical administrator, and politician born in
Harbor Grace, Newfoundland. He attended the Model and Normal
Schools in Truro, Nova Scotia and graduated from the Medical Faculty
of McGill University in 1868 with the highest honours, winning the
Holmes Gold Medal and Final Prize. From 1868 to 1874, he was Assistant House Surgeon at the Montreal
General Hospital. In 1872, he was appointed Lecturer on Hygiene at McGill University. He was appointed a Demonstrator of Anatomy in 1874 and in 1875 was named Professor of Clinical Surgery. Earlier in 1877, Roddick
traveled to Edinburgh to witness Joseph Lister's medical antiseptic system. Roddick returned to Montreal later
that year and introduced Joseph Lister's antiseptic system, primarily his 'carbolic spray,' revolutionizing the way
medicine was practiced in Montreal's Hospitals. In 1894 Roddick, with the aid of fellow specialist James Bell,
created the Department of Surgery and became the first chief surgeon of the Royal Victoria Hospital. However,
by 1901 Roddick found himself no longer able to practice surgery, having become allergic to the new antiseptic
replacing the carbolic acid he had introduced to Montreal, iodoform. He was instead given the position of Dean
of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University from 1901 to 1908, where he could contribute to medicine without
practicing surgery. In subsequent years Roddick would play an instrumental role in the creation of the Medical Council of Canada as well as establishing a common system of examinations for students graduating with medical
degrees in Canada.
